The Low-Down on the Far-Out

September 2005

The Big Picture for September

Venus and Jupiter lead the September parade with a lovely waltz through Libra. These planets are traditionally known as the Benefics—essentially, lucky planets that sprinkle around good karma like fairy dust. With Venus connected to money and Jupiter representing expansion, I know I'll be buying a lottery ticket or two! And may the best Benefic win. ;-)

Pluto stations Direct the very next day, although we'll be feeling the effects for a few days before and after. Pluto has been retrograde since March 26, leading us through an underground process of investigating the undercurrents in our life. For the next few months we will be putting into practice all that we have learned about empowerment, transformation, obsession and letting go.

The New Moon makes her veiled entrance cloaked in Virgo this month, on Sept.03. During this lunar cycle, we are guided along a twisting path through a jungle of paradox, which emerges in its full complexity at the Full Moon in Pisces on Sept.17.

There is also a Grand Trine in Earth signs taking place around the Full Moon. Although the orbs are a bit on the wide side, it is still significant because it involves Mars (which is a major player this Fall), along with Chiron and the Sun-Mercury conjunction. It also forms at the Full Moon, when our sensitivity is wide open. In fact, the Sun-Moon opposition (Full Moon) forms a Grand Trine Kite briefly, which gives the intensity of the Full Moon an extra spin. All of these factors reinforce the manifesting nature of the Full Moon, so it is likely to be a time of very strong energy.

Part of what makes this lunar cycle so weird and wonderful is a Yod aspect configuration that is in effect throughout most of September and into the beginning of October. This configuration involves a Jupiter-Pluto sextile, both of which are in quincunx aspect to Mars. What the heck does that mean? I thought you'd never ask. You can read the in-depth explanation below, but essentially it brings "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma," to quote Winston Churchill.

The Yod (also called the "Finger of God") is an irritating energy that aims to bring us to a philosophical perspective to wrestle with that riddle and be transformed by our experience of it. It helps to think laterally outside the box when finding oneself in the Yod's ironic energy. This Yod permeates the astrological weather all this month, becoming strongest at the Full Moon on Sept.17. This could feel like a trip down the Yellow Brick Road through the Enchanted Forest, but if we learn to take it all in stride, we'll emerge with our ruby slippers intact.

Venus joins in the fun at the end of the month (Oct.01 to be exact), when she moves into an opposition to Mars, creating a more complex aspect figure that is often called a Yod Kite or Boomerang. Essentially, the Yod energy will "boomerang" back to Venus, where she will require us to make some choices about how we will use the grounded, assertive energy of Mars in Taurus to channel the idealistic justice of Jupiter in Libra and the truth-seeking transformation of Pluto in Sagittarius.

What also makes the Venus factor interesting is that Venus and Mars will be in Mutual Reception, which means they each are in the sign that the other rules (Taurus and Scorpio). This means that the opposition between them at the end of the month will be especially intense and significant. It is like shining a light into a mirror that is facing another mirror, and the light just keeps reflecting back and forth between them. It intensifies the energy and also reinforces the Taurus-Scorpio axis of intense body sensuality (Taurus) with powerful passion and intimacy (Scorpio).

Speaking of Mars and the beginning of October, it's worth mentioning now that Mars will be going retrograde on Oct.01—the same day that Venus opposes him. This makes their opposition aspect (and the Yod Kite) even more intense and significant. A mystery wrapped in an enigma, indeed! This energy will immerse us in sexual, sensual, erotic tension and desire. Whether you experience it as outright sexual energy or as a drive to respond from your depth of creative passion, the energy at the end of the month is likely to be quite intense!

Of course, there will be much more about this in the October issue of the Low-Down on the Far-Out. Check out the NEW article series on Mars Retrograde and more!

After all that excitement, the Autumnal Equinox on Sept.22 seems almost anticlimactic! The equinox takes place twice a year (in April and September) when there is an equal length of day and night. The September equinox marks the beginning of Fall in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of Spring in the southern hemisphere. (In April the seasonal changes are opposite.) The September equinox also marks the time when the Sun moves into Libra, which is fitting since Libra is the sign of the scales—the balance!

Happy Transits!

Sep.01 – Venus Conjunct Jupiter (in Libra)

Romance is in the air, harmony is reflected in everything around you, and love and beauty abound! This can be a time of sweet mercy, pleasure and peace, both personally and in relationships. It can also be a time when your ability to attract money, resources and rewards into your life are especially strong. You might want to consider indulging in a lottery ticket or just treating yourself to some creature comforts, like a massage or a double chocolate brownie or anything that gets the endorphins flowing! Unfortunately, this can be a time when you are prone to over-indulge in pleasures or overestimate your resources, so keep your addictions in check and don't completely disregard your diet, your budget or your reality check in relationships.  Top of Page

Sep.02 – Pluto stationary Direct (in Sagittarius) ("What's a station?")

For about a week before and after, you may experience energy that is intense, compelling and transformative, as Pluto changes direction to its normal forward motion. If you've been going through deep, cathartic changes in your life for the last 6 months to a year, you may find that this time brings a shift in how you are able to approach those changes. Although this might be a time when you feel the weight of power struggles or loss in your life, it can also be a time when you find empowering strength in yourself that you didn't know you had. Above all, it is a time when your deepest, most authentic Self can emerge and be reborn anew.  Top of Page

Sep.03, 2:45 PM EDT – NEW MOON IN VIRGO ("What's a New Moon?")

Healing can take many forms, some quite surprising and unexpected. What seems like dis-ease can sometimes bring healing, and sometimes what seems like healing can just perpetuate dis-ease. This four-week lunar cycle will bring you in contact with the idea of the "healing crisis." This is a term used in alternative medicine that describes what happens when dis-ease is made slightly worse, but this actually stimulates the natural healing instincts to take over. This can occur at a physical, emotional or spiritual level. During this lunar cycle, you are challenged to become more aware of how this process operates in your life, and learn to participate in it more consciously and constructively. It will greatly help matters if you can resist the urge to strike out at everything or everyone that irritates you, upsets you, or interferes with your plans. Instead, cultivate the ability to "be with" your situation without automatically reacting, and learn by observing the paradoxes and ironies. (A sense of humour will help!) You will start to see the obstacles in your path as opportunities to grow stronger by staying focused on what is really important and letting go of the minor frustrations that keep you stuck. Yod - Jupiter SXT Pluto, QCX Mars. Venus moves to form a Yod Kite Oct.01.

Sep.04-Oct.07 – Yod aspect configuration (Jupiter/Venus Sextile Pluto, Quincunx Mars) ("What's a Yod?")

This is a powerful opportunity to learn how to work with aggression, stress and drive, through deep wisdom and transformation. However, there is a struggle involved in achieving this—a "fight the good fight" kind of heroic struggle. At the centre of that struggle is your ability to conquer your impulses—not by keeping them stuffed down, but by learning to stay centred in your body even in the midst of powerful external forces. You are called upon to learn a more grounded form of empowerment, by always striving to understand what is happening both under the surface (the hidden power dynamics) and from the "big picture" (the broad perspective). For example, you might find it difficult to pace your physical energy, and discover (on deeper reflection) that you are actually impatient because you're afraid you'll lose your nerve or lose control. Another example: you might find it difficult to take a stand in a relationship, in a way that doesn't invoke a battle of wills and that doesn't trigger defensive self-righteousness. In this case, looking at the long-term picture may help you find your way through the short-term conflicts.

No matter how you experience this energy, it is likely to be most intense and focused between Sep.12-17 (around the Full Moon). This "good fight" will find resolution and release around Oct.01, when Venus forms a Yod Kite by opposing Mars. Relationships, finances and values then become the final proving ground. Then you can apply what you've learned about asserting yourself and dealing with power, aggression, conflict and pacing your energy. Strive to pull together everything you've learned since early September in these areas, especially in terms of your impulses that get triggered in stressful situations. If look closely, you'll find you have more inner resources to draw on (and perhaps some outer ones too) that you didn't realise you had.  Top of Page

Sep.04 – Venus Sextile Pluto (in Libra/Sagittarius)

Close one-on-one relationships with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) could possibly benefit by being taken to a deeper level now, through creatively combining balanced harmony with deep connection. Just be careful that intimacy and bonding don't go over the top into obsession or domination. There is a brief opportunity now to become more authentic in how you relate to those close to you and how you establish a balance of power with them. The trick is to do this without trying to suppress, control or overpower the other person's interests. Financially, it is a time when you may have an opportunity to profit in your dealings with banks, insurance companies, taxes, and other institutions that deal with collective money.  Top of Page

Sep.04 – Mercury in Virgo (until Sep.20)

Mercury moves into its own sign of Virgo, where it brings an awareness of health, healing, work and service. This is a good time to be analytical, methodical and focused on improvement. But be careful not to get so lost in details or perfectionism that you can't see the forest for the trees. This energy is well spent by finding ways to make your work and the pursuit of your goals more efficient and effective. Try organising your activities better and prioritizing them according to what works well and what needs improvement and how. This is especially true for any health issues that keep getting pushed to the back burner. Whatever your plans, this transit can help you organise an effective strategy to move you forward.  Top of Page

Sep.09 – Mercury Opposite Uranus (in Virgo/Pisces)

This is a wakeup call! You are asked to open your mind so that you can see something about your life, yourself or your situation that has eluded you until now. It might be a shocking revelation that changes your whole perspective...or it might also be a delightful surprise that adds a new dimension you hadn't thought of. Emails, Internet chats, and interaction with technology may be part of this transit as well. Communication may be a bit erratic or unpredictable, so be careful not to speak thoughtlessly or carelessly. However, you may find that words come you to intuitively or spontaneously to talk about difficult subjects.  Top of Page

Sep.09 – Venus Square Chiron (in Libra/Capricorn)

You may be forced to make adjustments to relationships and/or finances now, as you face situations in these areas that just don’t want to balance out the way you want them to. You may feel a bit like you're in a catch-22 (no-win situation), where the more you try to find balance and harmony, the more you feel like you're chasing your own tail around in circles. This is a time when healing in relationships and financial problems may seem impossible or seriously blocked—but this is a problem that is meant to be solved, not defeated by. Strive to find a creative solution, which may not be what you had hoped for but can still provide what you ultimately need at a higher level.  Top of Page

[includes/adarchives_ldmid.htm]

Sep.11 – Venus in Scorpio (until Oct.07)

Venus is the planet of relationships, interaction, beauty, pleasure and material resources. When she struts through Scorpio, you may experience extra emphasis with sensuality, sexuality and intimacy, as well as the need to find a balance of power with others. It may be easier to attract what (or who) you want now, but there can also be a danger of becoming manipulative, controlling or devious to get what you want. Strive to become centred in your deepest heart's desire through steadfast self-honesty, and avoid becoming so obsessed with power, wealth or lust that you lose sight of your true light inside.  Top of Page

Sep.11 – Venus and Mars in Mutual Reception (until Oct.07) ("What's Mutual Reception?")

Venus and Mars combine their energies through "mutual reception," which happens while Venus is in Scorpio (ruled by Mars) and while Mars is in Taurus (ruled by Venus). ("What does it mean for a sign to be 'ruled by' a planet?") This means you have an opportunity to explore a better balance between these planetary energies: aggression with receptivity; forceful coercion with gentle persuasion; sexual desire with sensual love; and methodical action with cunning strategy. These energies can mutually support each other, but they could also compete with each other. For example: You could wind up in a battle of wills with your partner, or you could combine your energies and work toward a common goal. You might become obsessed with trying to acquire something (or someone) you want but wind up sabotaging yourself through stubbornness and inflexibility. Or you could negotiate a win-win solution that might mean giving up some of the control but gets you more of what you want. You have almost 4 weeks to experiment with methods and strategies to bring these energies together in productive, constructive ways.  Top of Page

Sep.12-23 – Grand Trine in Earth (Mars-Chiron-Mercury/Sun)

Grand Trine in Earth signs - Sun-Mercury, Mars and Chiron. Venus forms a Grand Trine Kite on Oct.01.We have an abundance of practicality, structure and manifestation while this aspect configuration is in effect. It is a good time to plan and take action that can bring healing and balance through awareness, analysis and paying attention to the details. It is also possible to get bogged down in seriousness, pessimism and perfectionism. To combat this, make sure you keep moving in whatever you're involved with, even if it's only baby steps, and give yourself permission to be human (less than perfect). Although this Grand Trine is not as tight as other aspect configurations I usually talk about in the Low-Down column, I think it bears mentioning. Its energy peaks at the Full Moon on Sep.17 and lasts until Sep.20, although it remains in wide orb for a few more days. The energy may also be more obvious when the Moon passes over the points of the Trine: Sep.13 and Sep.21. So take advantage of this energy, especially leading up to the Full Moon, by mapping out step-by-step plans to heal the problems in your life. This configuration won't necessarily solve those problems, but it is a powerful resource to help you work through them. This energy comes back briefly on Oct.01, when the Moon joins hands with Chiron and Mars, with Venus as the anchor. (More about this in the October update.)  Top of Page

Sep.13 – Sun Trine Mars (in Virgo/Taurus)

Your energy, purpose, vitality and health are likely to be very strong and clear during this transit. Your sense of purpose is supported by your ability to assert yourself and take a stand for what you want and what you believe in. In general, this transit is a great time to take action, especially if you have prepared the way and have all your ducks in a row. If you've just been waiting for a spurt of self-confidence, this transit could give you the push you need to move forward in your plans. Strive to be spontaneous rather than impulsive, and confident rather than arrogant.  Top of Page

Sep.14 – Sun Square Pluto (in Virgo/Sagittarius)

This can be a challenging time, when your sense of purpose, identity and direction may feel blocked, dominated or regulated by forces beyond your control. You may find yourself confronted by situations or people with whom you must rally a stronger sense of self-empowerment, to keep from feeling powerless or overwhelmed. You might experience abandonment or power struggles, or you might be forced to let go of something or someone due to circumstances beyond your control. However, this can also be a time when you reach inside yourself and find you have more strength than you thought you did. It can be a time when adversity inspires new assertiveness and purpose, born of conflict and struggle.  Top of Page

Sep.15 – Mercury Trine Mars (in Virgo/Taurus)

You may find that you speak with more conviction and purpose under this transit. You may find you are more able to stand up and defend yourself verbally (if needed), or to spar and debate with others about ideas. You may find the courage to conquer your shyness and speak your mind or ask for that date. You may be able to more easily imagine taking risks now that have inhibited you in the past. Or you might find ideas coming to you quickly and spontaneously. There is a slight risk of overdoing it and acting on your ideas or thoughts before you've been able to decide if that is wise. However, this is a time when decisions can be made relatively easily.  Top of Page

Sep.16 – Mercury Square Pluto (in Virgo/Sagittarius)

You are faced now with a challenge to empower your communication and perceptions, although this may not come easily. It could involve having to face some rather difficult truths that might be a bit disturbing or hard to accept. However in doing so, you gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself, your situation and your role within it. Communication (from others or yourself or both) could be intense, intimidating or even downright damaging, since it may be tempting to get caught up in power struggles and domination. But communication can also be used now to heal, by cutting through hypocrisy and insincerity in order to reach a deeper authenticity and truth—like lancing a boil so that healing can take place.  Top of Page

Sep.17, 10:01 PM EDT – FULL MOON IN PISCES ("What's a Full Moon?")

The unfolding process that began at the New Moon now reaches a turning point, and for the rest of the lunar cycle, you will manifest, integrate and assess the results. The Yod (Sep.04-Oct.07) is at its peak right now, so it may help to refresh your memory. The paradox of the "healing crisis" now becomes clearer, as you deal with a duality of macrocosm and microcosm — the "big picture" and the specific details that make up that picture; universal ideals and practical reality. Your heart may long to merge with something greater than yourself and surrender to trusting (or blind) faith. But your analytical mind knows you must still live in the practical, mundane world, even if you're not yet sure how to get a handle on it. How to reconcile these opposing forces? Much depends on how you handle your impulses and reactions: Are you pitting yourself against limitations and authority through power struggles, stubbornly digging in your heels to get your own way? Better to combine your grasp of your situation with powerful endurance to take slow, steady steps. The faith and trust you seek can be found by taking things one lumbering step at a time – like the tortoise and the hare, slower will ultimately be faster. If you get pulled out of your centre and your attempts to find solutions just seem to create more problems, then stop, just focus on your breathing for a while, remember the bigger purpose that you're doing it all for and allow that to guide you. Trust the overall process and allow it to flow, without trying to push the river and without believing the river will do all the work.  Top of Page

Sep.17 – Sun Conjunct Mercury (in Virgo)

You are what you think! Your sense of self and purpose can seem synonymous with what you think, perceive and say during this time. This can make for an easy flow of ideas and communication from inside your brain to the external world. It can also increase your perceptions and observations of the world, as you file it all away in your internal database. On the other hand, you may find yourself a bit tongue-tied, as it could be hard to separate your sense of self from your perceptions and ideas enough to find the words to adequately express them. In that case, just observe and go with the flow; the words will come later.  Top of Page

Sep.17 – Jupiter Sextile Pluto (in Libra/Sagittarius)

A deeper level of understanding and wisdom is possible under this transit, which is in strongest effect for about a week before and after this date. When a broad perspective (Jupiter) is combined with depth of insight (Pluto), the results can be profound! This is a good time to explore deep philosophical and spiritual questions; to delve into the vast mysteries of life. There is a risk, however, that your ideals of truth and justice could also be used as a weapon or used to support arrogance and domination. When someone is convinced they're right, it might not be easy to see how knowledge and power can be misused. It's your own creative ability (in the broadest sense of the word) that can bring these energies together, and it is your own integrity and self-awareness that will guide you in how to use them. When in doubt, consult someone whose opinions and knowledge you trust.  Top of Page

Sep.18 – Venus Square Saturn (in Scorpio/Leo)

Finances, relationships and interactions with others may seem blocked or require additional effort right now. Manifesting your desires may require added hard work right now, but this struggle can bring you closer to your goals. It may feel like there is a huge rock on your path that blocks you from fulfilling your heart's desire (be that in love, interactions, money or pleasure). This is ultimately a problem to be solved by confronting the aspects of your desire that are unrealistic, unworkable or just not in your best interest.  Top of Page

Sep.18 – Venus Trine Uranus (in Scorpio/Pisces)

Spontaneity and liberation burst into your relationships, finances, resources and pleasures. You might feel compelled to try something completely different that shakes up the "same-old-same-old" routines you're used to. The upside is that you have the opportunity to break free of some old habits and breathe some fresh air into your life. But the downside could come in the form of impulse spending beyond your budget, or recklessness in your interactions and relationships. Strive to break free of what holds you back from being your true self, without destroying the structure of order in your life.  Top of Page

Sep.19 – Mercury Trine Chiron (Virgo/Capricorn)

Your mental focus and communication now get an injection of healing energy. If you have been caught up in depression, cynicism, escapism or "stinkin' thinkin'" (denial of reality that is rationalized to get around the truth) you can now find some relief and healing. Mental struggles and critical "self-talk" can now find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings some peace of mind. You have increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems. And you might also find someone now who can give you good advice or support about your own problems.  Top of Page

Sep.20 – Mercury in Libra (until Oct.08)

Mercury glides into Libra, bringing awareness and new ideas about your style of interaction and self-expression. It can be easier to communicate with gentleness, fairness and diplomacy during this time. Thoughts, ideas, communication and negotiation may reach a better state of balance and harmony. For example, you may find it easier to balance criticism with gentleness. It might help to bounce your ideas and thoughts off others who can be a good sounding board. Seeing both sides of the situations in your life is probably easier now, although this can also make it harder to make clear decisions about things. Strive for win-win solutions that are fair to all concerned.  Top of Page

Sep.20 – Sun Trine Chiron (in Libra/Capricorn)

This is a time when your efforts to mend and heal chronic struggles in your life can start to come together and move forward a bit. You have the confidence now to try new solutions, or at least to approach problems from a different angle that sheds new light on the situation. Some of this may come from finding the courage to walk your own path, or the daring to face the hidden shadow of your worries and weaknesses. Regardless of what struggles or woundedness you have in your life, strive to find a midpoint between merely dipping your toe in troubled waters and assuming that's enough, versus jumping in the deep end and marinating in it.  Top of Page

Sep.22, 6:23 PM EDT – AUTUMNAL EQUINOX – Sun in Libra (until Oct.23)

Happy Solar Return to all Libras! While the Sun is in Libra, it brings experiences into our lives that focus us in the areas of love, close relationships, one-on-one interaction, diplomacy, negotiation, strategy, fairness, equilibrium, balance, harmony and beauty. This time also marks the point of equal balance between day and night – the Autumnal Equinox. In the Northern Hemisphere, the nights now become longer than the days, and in the Southern Hemisphere, the days become longer than the nights, until the December Solstice. Balance is the key concept here! What is out of balance in your life? How can you negotiate or strategize to bring that area of your life back into harmony? Libra encourages you to balance your life in diplomatic, discreet, "win-win" ways. But if that's not possible, it will do it aggressively (creating conflict in order to break the stalemate of the imbalance) or manipulatively (people-pleasing to co-dependently get its way). Thus, Libra is known as both the peace-maker and the war-maker. If you find yourself instinctively trying to smooth out conflict—or instigate it!—take a step back and ask yourself if that is your best choice in the situation. Just don't get stuck in Libran indecision! Make your choice and then see if it brings what you want.  Top of Page

Sep.24 – Venus Square Neptune (in Scorpio/Aquarius)

Money, material resources, relationships and pleasure could be subject to confusion, deception, or unrealistic wishful thinking under this transit. It may seem that what you thought you had (love, friendship, pleasure, money, resources) has suddenly disappeared or isn't as dependable as you thought it was. You might feel disappointed, disillusioned, sad or alone, but this is more likely to be a passing phase than a serious crisis. The question is: what are your secret longings and subtle desires that may be operating unconsciously? These could be clouding your ability to relate to people and situations in your life. Old addictions, depression or idealism may surface as way of dealing with feelings. A better outlet would be to channel your feelings and experiences into creativity, beauty, inspiration and compassion; for example, art, music or helping others.  Top of Page

Sep.25 – Mercury Sextile Saturn (in Libra/Leo)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and pursuit of your goals now. It can be a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your goals. It could also be a good time to bring closure to finished goals by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the process of pursuing those goals. This probably won't happen without a bit of effort on your part to make it happen, but the opportunity is there if you choose to take it.  Top of Page

Sep.29 – Mercury Trine Neptune (in Libra/Aquarius)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It could also be easily to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about things you don't have and wish you did, although this can be channelled into creative expression (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, singing in the shower, whatever!). Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you can likely get compassionate responses from others about your problems as well. It is a time for optimism and hope, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.  Top of Page
