"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience ARIES energy in your life.

Aries is the initiation! Its energy is all about making a fresh start, moving forward, no holds barred and being straightforward and direct in all that you do. No beating around the bush. (And no more clichι phrases either. ;-)

Here in the northern hemisphere, spring is beginning in earnest. Admittedly, the symbolism assigned to the zodiac signs are filtered through the seasonal changes of the northern hemisphere. Although in the north the earth is now stretching and yawning, arising from its winter slumber, in the southern hemisphere it is stretching and yawning and preparing to hibernate for the winter. What's so initiatory, fresh and springy about that, right?

We have to reach a little deeper to find a meaningful interpretation of Aries in a southern hemisphere context. Perhaps it's useful to think of the zodiac like the infinity symbol – a figure-8 on its side. At the equinoxes (Aries in March and Libra in September), the momentum reaches a pushing-off point where the paths cross in the middle. No matter which way you're going (toward warmer or cooler weather), it's a new beginning. You're moving out of the transition phase and toward the realm of extreme highs and lows.

No matter where it's heading, any change is a new adventure for Aries. The archetypal energy in Aries is up for any challenge, even if it's not clear yet what that is. Aries doesn't need to predict, analyze, prepare or verify – it only needs the courage, initiative and opportunity to "just do it" as the slogan goes. And when Aries catches a whiff of something new, exciting, risky or challenging, it considered this an invitation to "go for it."

This anticipatory atmosphere is reflected by Mars, the planetary ruler of Aries, who has been gradually picking up speed since turning direct after his retrograde sprint (Dec.20 to Mar.10). Like a car that's finally beginning to move at a decent speed after starting from zero, Mars is now getting back into his usual rhythm and looking for some trouble to get into. ;-)

Although still another month away from getting past the retrograde Shadow, our Mars energy is ready to move, shake, change and conquer whatever we've been wrestling with since last mid-October. The New Moon in Aries can provide the rocket fuel fit to launch an eager Mars.

However, Mars has a fair bit of gravity to overcome in order to get fully into orbit. From now until the beginning of May, Mars has only stressful aspects with other planets. The nice stabilizing, supportive sextile to Saturn in exalted Libra has now faded from orb, leaving Mars to fend for himself against whatever may come.

First to challenge him is a square (90°) from Mercury on Apr.25 (who by then is retrograde since Apr.18). By the time Mercury has finished smacking him around, the Sun steps in and takes over with another square aspect (May.04). Saturn joins in the brawl with a semi-square (45°) on May.03, and Uranus zaps him in the badoobies a few times with a sesqui-square (135°) on the same day. It's not until May.07 that Venus finally comes in and soothes his wounds with a sextile (60°).

Mars gets to catch his breath for a little while after that, but by the time he's finally out of the Shadow on May.17, he's being confronted by a sesqui-square (135°) from Pluto. So although Mars gets the boost from the New Moon in Aries on Apr.14, he still has to fight his way back to "normal" again.

The good news is that at the New Moon, the Sun and Mars are in mutual reception (in each other's sign: Mars in Leo and Sun in Aries), which give them a natural empathy and cooperative understanding of each other. The Sun is also exalted (especially strong) in Aries, so there's a lot of strength to draw from. By the time the Sun squares Mars, it's in Taurus so that mutual empathy is no longer in the foreground, but will still be lingering in the background from the initiatory point of the New Moon.

What does it all mean? It means that as long as your Mars energy is enjoying the challenge, you'll know that you're fighting the good fight. Allow yourself to be inspired by the need to reform, adjust and make changes in order to achieve your goals. It's only human to get frustrated if things don't go smoothly, but let this make your Mars even more determined to "get it right." That doesn't necessarily mean that your will power is meant to conquer all obstacles so that you can have whatever you want. What you want will very likely have to be tempered by practicality, integrity, self-awareness, rethinking and refining decisions, and following a plan of action instead of just running on impulse.

So if you run into what feels like a series of roadblocks, consider them as valuable feedback about things that need to be adjusted and reconsidered. Either your overall direction is bang on but how you get there needs some tweaking, or you have the tools and resources to get you there but your direction needs to be altered slightly. Pay attention to what the Universe is telling you and you'll figure out which.

Aspects from the Moon can help smooth the ride a bit: Apr.17 and 26 (sextile), Apr.30 and May.11 (trine), and May.15 and 24 (sextile). These dates pose a potential to spot an opportunity to move forward or find some inner balance. On the other hand, if you get tangled up in roadmaps, obstacles, adjustments and a bit too much challenge, it could mean you've got some other personal transits that are creating turbulence. Contact me and we can figure out how to get you moving again. By the way, I'm extending the Reading Special at least until the end of April, so don't miss this great deal! (You can thank that rascal Mercury for that one...)

At the time of the New Moon, the Sun is moving into position to form a Yod Kite with Neptune, Chiron, Saturn and Uranus. The Saturn-Uranus opposition forms the backbone of the Kite, which precedes and brings into focus the 4th exact pass of that transit (Apr.26). (More on this below.)

Mercury goes retrograde just a few days from now (Apr.18), so give yourself lots of extra time to make your deadlines and appointments. Expect wrong numbers and be alert to miscommunications

And the really big news between now and the Full Moon in Scorpio is that Chiron is moving into Pisces! Although it only stays there for 3 months, it comes back again in November and stays there until 2018. I've written a new article about Chiron in Pisces, so be sure to check it out.

Apr.16-22 – Yod Kite aspect configuration

Yod Kite aspect configuration

The Yod Kite is always a complex aspect figure. Sun sextile Neptune/Chiron. Both sides quincunx Saturn. Uranus opposite Saturn and semi-sextile Sun and Neptune/Chiron. This aspect figure brings together almost half the solar system!

All participants are closest on Apr.18-19 when all of these points are at 28 and 29 degrees of their respective signs. This aspect pattern was also forming at the last Full Moon in Libra on Mar.29, but with Venus where the Sun now is, so if you're feeling a bit dιjΰ vu-ish, now you know why.

This combination of planets is likely to bring out the complexity, subtlety and paradoxical nature of the Saturn-Uranus opposition, which reaches its 4th of its 5 passes in just a few days after this aspect pattern has faded away. With the opposition being preceded by a Yod Kite, you could easily feel the tension, agitation and irritation of Saturn and Uranus as unusually strong for about a week or two before the opposition is exact.

The already contradictory energies of realistic Saturn and visionary Uranus might feel even harder to reconcile than expected, despite the fact that you've already survived 3 passes of that aspect (Nov.04.2008, Feb.05.2009, Sep.15.2009). Stay flexible, grounded and centered as much as possible. Creativity, music, meditation, prayer or spending time in a beautiful setting (e.g. in nature) could help you find a soothing and/or expressive outlet for whatever frustration you might be experiencing.

Apr.17 – Venus sextile Jupiter (21:02 of Taurus/Pisces) (Apr.18 in AU)

There is an abundance of creative inspiration, material enjoyment, feel-good pleasure in the air! Your luck and opportunity to attract money, love, resources and self-esteem are high right now. It may be relatively easy to attract the people, possessions and opportunities you want or need, but you'll still have to work to get them. On the other hand, your eyes may be bigger than your stomach (as mother would say) and you might be tempted to charm, flirt or bluff your way through a situation more than usual. There may also be a tendency to self-indulgence. These are not necessarily bad things, but it's probably wise to remember to use this energy to enhance your best judgement, not override it.

Apr.18 – Mercury stationary Retrograde (12:37 of Taurus) ("What's a Station?"  Read article about Stations.  Read article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury now goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped during the station. During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress. Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is best to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures. It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct. In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible; for example, it's common to have to reschedule appointments. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

Mercury is retrograde in Taurus, which can slow down your thoughts and put you in a very experiential kind of space. You might find you "think with your body" which can communicate what you need to say or do without needing words or conscious thought. You could feel a bit "spaced out" or sluggish mentally, like when you first wake up after a deep sleep. This is probably because your mind is more tuned into your body right now than on words and language. Your body's intuition may tell you more than your conscious thoughts, so make a point to listen when your body seems to be trying to tell you something. You could find that it's hard to get your brain started in the morning, or that keeping your thoughts sharp and focused requires a huge effort, or that your mental energy feels stuck in the mud.

If that's the case, make sure you're getting enough sleep, enough "down time" when you can just coast, and enough time when you can just relax and take pleasure in the moment. Try taking a walk in a natural setting somewhere to enjoy the trees, flowers, rocks, waves, clouds or whatever is available. Or just take a 15 minute break and put yourself in a completely different space by listening to music – and just listen to music; do nothing else. Or get someone to give your neck and shoulders a massage for a few minutes. Or, if your mind refuses to let go of the problems, stress or feelings you're stuck in, listen to some therapeutic music and nature sounds that are specifically designed to massage your brain into the head space of your choice: meditation, relaxation, focus, energy, affirmations, etc. These sounds are a mind blowing experience! You can listen to some free samples and see what I mean.

It can really help to get into a routine where you can just do whatever you're doing and you don't have to think about it a lot – kind of like a moving meditation. Slow down. Don't "push the river." And give your brain a well-deserved rest. If you have to use words and focused thought, give yourself lots of extra time to prepare and map out your plan of action. This doesn't have to be an ordeal – Taurus is a pleasure meant to be enjoyed!

Apr.18 – Sun sextile Neptune (28:11 of Aries/Aquarius)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Although this is mostly a very positive energy, you could become so immersed in your longing for the ideal that you have trouble dealing with the less-than-ideal realities that still must be dealt with. Gaining the benefit from this transit will still require some effort. Hope, optimism and imagination are in the air, which could bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity and imagination can be very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision, and you may experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential now to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately – although this will require your cooperation to take advantage of it. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Apr.20 – Sun sextile Chiron (29:59 of Aries/Aquarius)

This is a time when you have an opportunity to mend and heal the chronic struggles in your life. You may find new inspiration, motivation or confidence that can help rejuvenate waning enthusiasm or reconcile persistent problems, although you'll still have to apply effort to bring it all together. You might get the chance to demonstrate your ability to walk your own path in a new way. Or, you might get a peek inside the hidden shadow of your worries and discouragement, giving you new insight into how you might be unconsciously sabotaging your conscious efforts. You may have to face a bit of your own fear of failure or low self-esteem before you can get beyond these feelings and tap into the benefits of this transit – not because you are failing but because these concerns may arise in response to the new potential now available to you. By tapping into this potential for creative problem solving, you can bring some healing to whatever your situation is.

By the way, did you notice the degree where this aspect is taking place?? It happens in the last minute of the last degree of their respective signs! You can't get much closer than that without actually being in the next sign! The Sun moves into Taurus just 5 minutes later, and Chiron moves into Pisces just less than 2 hours later. What does this mean? For starters, this aspect becomes a bridge between signs. A sextile between Aquarius and Aries normally would focus on finding the courage and drive to initiate (Aries) the freedom and breaking-free changes that are envisioned in Aquarius. A sextile between Pisces and Taurus focuses more on taking an imaginative, spiritual vision in Pisces and enacting the steps to make it manifest in Taurus.

With Chiron moving from Aquarius to Pisces, we shift from feeling and healing the ways that we feel we don't fit in and feel constricted by conventional society, to feeling and healing the ways that we feel alienated from our spiritual source or alienated from society because of our spiritual beliefs. With the Sun moving from Aries to Taurus, we shift from striking out impulsively to fix the problems to slowing down and figuring out what's necessary to get from "here" to "there" – from rebellious, reactive anger to faith, patience and practical solutions.

Apr.20 – Sun enters Taurus (until May.20)

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Taurus! This is a time when we all get in touch with the part of us that wants things tangible, practical, plentiful and pleasurable! Taurus is also connected to money, finances, possessions and resources of all kinds, so this is also a time to take stock of what you HAVE in your life – literally and figuratively. Take some time to examine your values. What people, things or principles are worth spending your time, effort, energy or money? It's also an opportunity to explore how separate or enmeshed your sense of self is from your possessions. Do you think less of yourself if you can't surround yourself with wealth? What forms of abundance and blessings are in your life, and are you consciously grateful for them or do you take them for granted? Use this Taurus energy to approach goals in a methodical way, appreciate your blessings, and understand life at its most concrete, basic level. This might sound about as exciting as watching the grass grow, but the Taurus way is to slow things down enough that you can experience and take pleasure in the simple things, in the Here and Now. Enjoy it!

Apr.20 – Chiron enters Pisces (until July.20; then from Nov.10.2010 to April 2018)

Apr.22 – Annual Earth Day

Happy Annual Earth Day! This year marks the 40th anniversary of this special day! Check to see what's happening in your area.

Apr.23 – Venus square Neptune (28:18 of Taurus/Aquarius) (Apr.24 in AU)

Money, material resources, relationships and pleasure could be subject to confusion, deception, or unrealistic wishful thinking under this transit. It may seem that what you thought you had (love, friendship, pleasure, money, resources) has suddenly disappeared or isn't as dependable as you thought it was. You might feel disappointed, disillusioned, sad or alone, but this is more likely to be a passing phase than a serious crisis. The question is: what are your secret longings and subtle desires that may be operating unconsciously? These could be clouding your ability to relate to people and situations in your life. Old addictions, depression or idealism may surface as way of dealing with feelings. A better outlet would be to channel your feelings and experiences into creativity, beauty, inspiration and compassion; for example, art, music or helping others.

Apr.23 – Venus sextile Uranus (28:37 of Taurus/Pisces) (Apr.24 in UK, AU)

Relationships, finances, resources and pleasures could benefit from spontaneously trying a completely different approach. If these areas of your life have been getting a little stale or too routine, this transit could shake things up a little...just enough to make things interesting and breathe some fresh air into your familiar routine. Unexpected income could come your way, or you might discover something you just can't resist buying, or you might have an opportunity to make new social connections. The upside of this transit is that it's possible to break free of old habits and enjoy spontaneous interaction. The downside could come in the form of impulse purchases that are beyond your budget, or behaving a bit recklessly or making snap decisions that you can't live with later. This energy is best used to break free of what restricts you, without shattering the foundation you're standing on.

Apr.24 – Venus trine Saturn (28:54 of Taurus/Virgo)

Stability in relationships and finances characterises this transit. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and to invest the hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and interaction with others. Commitment and structure are easier to achieve and embrace than change or taking risks. Self-worth can benefit now because you are less inclined to give in to mood swings. However, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Apr.25 – Venus enters Gemini (until May.19)

Relationships, finances, resources and values take on an air of curiosity, communication and cleverness. It is a good time to discuss, think about and create strategies to improve these areas or make them more enjoyable. You may be especially curious, flirtatious or easy-going now – so much so that you might drift into superficiality (which might be a welcome rest from more intense or committed social activity). It can be a good time to exchange ideas and information with others, especially in a social context. Schmoozing and networking with others are prime examples of this. This can also be a good time to negotiate contracts and agreements with people, in this atmosphere of information exchange. Just remember that it's one thing to use charm and humor to influence the direction of the discussion, but it may not be wise to indulge in blatant manipulation of others.

Apr.25 – Venus square Chiron (00:12 of Gemini/Pisces)

You may be forced to make adjustments to relationships and/or finances now, as you face situations in these areas that just don't want to balance out the way you want them to. You may feel a bit like you're in a catch-22 (no-win situation), where the more you try to find balance and harmony, the more you feel like you're chasing your own tail around in circles. This is a time when healing in relationships and financial problems may be difficult to obtain. Harmony in these areas can seem impossible or blocked, yet it is still necessary to keep trying. By trying anyway, it may be possible to find a solution that meets your needs, even if it may not be what you wanted, hoped for or expected. Strive to find a creative solution that draws on your best side.

Apr.25 – Mercury Retrograde square Mars (10:19 of Taurus/Leo)

Fiery speech, argument, hot debate and impatience characterise this transit. You may encounter conflicts of interest and want to solve them NOW. And in your haste to find a quick fix, you could wind up creating more problems than you solve. You might also feel like you have hit an impasse or roadblock in a problem that began since Mercury entered the shadow (Apr.04). What you thought was a solution or agreement might now show itself to be unworkable or needing adjustment. Getting angry or frustrated is likely to just aggravate the situation, so it might be wise to vent these feelings well away from the actual situation or people that are triggering them. Your mind may see what needs to be said, but you could wind up blurting it out before you've had a chance to choose your words more carefully. Figure out what you really want, and when you feel a bit calmer and more grounded, THEN have your say. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you find the courage to speak up or assert yourself in situations where you have been overly inhibited before now. Don't become so calm that you lose your edge, but do use good judgment when choosing when and how to act. Use this energy to stoke your motivational fires and use your ideas to generate action (not reaction). Pace and harness the energy like a race horse. This is a time to "do your homework" and find new solutions to existing problems.

This is the second of 3 passes of this transit: Apr.05, Apr.25 and Jun.11.

Apr.25 – Sun trine Pluto (05:19 of Taurus/Capricorn) (Apr.26 in AU)

Your sense of purpose is strong now, as you are able to tap into a deeper level of energy and determination. Your personality is likely to be more forceful now, which can be great if you need to make a strong impression but perhaps not so much in situations requiring delicacy or subtlety. Your ability to see below the surface of things is especially clear, and it may be possible to unearth secrets or get at the core of unconscious patterns (yours or others'). This is a time when your personal presence may come across as somewhat "larger than life," so you need to remember that a little goes a long way during this transit. This could be a time when you suddenly find the strength to stand up and assert your personal power in a situation that has felt overwhelming or discouraging. On the other hand, if you are still struggling to learn how to own your power, without using nuclear bombs to make your point, you may still feel a bit overwhelmed or daunted by this transit. In that case, take smaller steps and don't try to push the river.

Apr.26 – Saturn opposite Uranus (28:46 of Virgo/Pisces) (Apr.27 in UK, AU)

Responsibility and common sense face off against revolution and vision under this transit. These energies mix together like fireworks inside a small room! The fact that they're in an opposition aspect (180°) only amplifies their differences. However, you can get them to complement each other provided you don't get locked into thinking that one must win out over the other. It's tempting to get stuck in one extreme or the other, thinking that it's a contest about which is the "better" planet/approach/candidate/path. At their worst, they can create a war between the past and the future, between rigid conformity and chaotic rebellion, or between needing others' approval to feel good about yourself versus being so independent that you can't allow yourself to connect with others.

At best, this is about negotiating a cooperative balance between these extremes. Saturn contributes stability and caution, which provides balance with the flexibility and foresight of Uranus. When these two energies work together well, they can produce lasting change that opens up old structures and allows room for future growth. Uranus inspires you to open yourself to your best unique potential, while Saturn provides a solid foundation on which to express it.

Saturn and Uranus come into opposition about every 46 years. So for many of my viewers, either you weren't alive when it happened last (in 1965-67) or you might not remember it very well. The last opposition took place in the tumultuous 60s, when the radical youth faced off against the aging "establishment." It also combined with the infamous Uranus-Pluto conjunction which also fuelled the dramatic changes that began in the 60s. Over the next few years we are approaching the square aspect between Uranus and Pluto, which indicates a major turning point in the processes that began with the conjunction. The Saturn-Uranus opposition is the prelude and perhaps the facilitator of that turning point.

The dramatic disruptions and changes we are seeing now–economically, socially, politically and ecologically–are the early rumblings of long-term change. This is unfolding both collectively and individually over about a 2-year period from late 2008 to mid-2010. Trying to control or hold it back (Saturn) will only amplify the reactionary result (Uranus). On the other hand, just giving up and letting the chaos run wild (Uranus) will only send us crashing headlong into reality and harsh consequences (Saturn). Both sides must have a say in what happens.

This is the 4th of 5 passes: Nov.04.2008,Feb.05.2009, Sep.15.2009, Apr.26.2010 and Jul.26.2010. At this stage of this long transit, we have been through one complete cycle. We know what we're up against. We're familiar with the energy (for better or worse). Now it's time to dig a little deeper. There are deeper layers to the knowledge, revelations and agenda presented by these two planets. Perhaps you need to commit yourself a bit more to a major change you've already begun. Maybe you are being called on to step just a little farther away from your comfort zone to discover your greater potential. Or you might find it's necessary to establish a more flexible and resilient balance between order and chaos, structure and freedom, doing what's expected versus finding your own path.

Sabian Symbol Scorpio 9: Dental work.

Sabian Symbol for the
Full Moon in Scorpio

Scorpio 9

Dental work.

All together now: "Eeewww!" That was my first reaction to this Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") and I'm sure for many of you too. ;-) So let's demystify and detoxify this symbol so we can work with it.

For this symbol, there's much discussion from Dane Rudhyar and Blain Bovee about the significance of the teeth. Teeth allow us to break down food so that it can be assimilated as nourishment for our bodies. However, what we feed ourselves – physically, psychologically or spiritually – isn't always in our highest interests.

Culture can influence our choices. Sometimes our desire for pleasure, comfort or obsessive cravings lead us to consume "junk food," whether that's literally as candy and McDonald's, or figuratively in the form of TV sitcoms, "happily-ever-after" movies, video games or even Sun sign horoscopes. Any of these things can be fun and satisfying in moderation, but too much can create more problems than they solve.

In the case of literal junk food, it can lead to deterioration of our teeth – the very things we need to be able to ingest the nourishment that will sustain us and keep us healthy. That's when we need to visit the dentist, who can repair the damage.

In the case of shallow or impulsive entertainment, it can make our minds, feelings and spirits lazy. Our authentic passion can deteriorate into obsession and hedonism. We can lose the ability to nurture the spirit, which we need in order to continue to grow as individuals. When we allow ourselves to deteriorate in these ways, the repair work can be painful, difficult and disruptive to our lives.

This symbol suggests that it may be time to do some of that repair work in your life. It doesn't have to be painful – even a visit to the dentist can help you maintain your healthy in preventive ways. Now is the time to smooth over the rough edges of issues that are starting to irritate you, before they develop into full blown problems. And if you have more serious problems that you've been avoiding, this may be a good time to seek out some extra help to start the repair work.

Scorpio LOVES to go to extremes! Scorpio knows that passion requires LOTS of depth to stretch into, breadth to expand into, substance to feed off of, and intensity to heat it up and set it on fire.

And Scorpio LIVES on passion! Can't live without it. If Scorpio loses its passion, it becomes little more than a dense, dark hunk of coal – a hard charred cinder that inevitably must crumble into ashes from which it must rise again like a phoenix (a mythological creature that has many Scorpio qualities).

The thing about passionate extremes is that if you burn too hot, you can burn out. That's what happens when you become incinerated by your own intensity. This is like the phoenix that is consumed by flames and reduced to ashes from which it is then reborn. The trick with this Scorpionic transformation and rebirth cycle is that (a) you need to be ready for it, and (b) you need to keep moving through it and not get stuck somewhere in the middle of the process.

So it is probably not surprising that the Full Moon in Scorpio contains both the encouragement to work toward transformation and rebirth, as well as a caution not to enter into it or treat it lightly. The Scorpio part of us can withstand a lot of intensity, but even that has its limits.

The scorpion itself likes it hot. Most varieties of scorpion are found in hot, dry geographical areas, although they can survive in almost any climate. But even a scorpion can freak out if it gets too hot. There's an old myth that the scorpion will sting itself to death when surrounded by fire – not true, but when it gets too hot, they will go into spasms that can look like they're trying to commit suicide.

T-square to Mars at the Full Moon

It will help to remember this analogy during this Full Moon, since energy could burn a little too hot at times. Mars, the traditional ruler of Scorpio, forms a T-square with the Sun-Moon opposition, which is bound to heat up the atmosphere around the time of the Full Moon. At its best, you could experience this as an increase in passion, heat and psychological or physical energy, which can enhance your motivation, commitment or pleasure.

On the other hand, Mars is the only planet in a Fire sign at the time of the Full Moon, which puts an extra strain on Mars to "carry the torch" for everything else in the chart. When combined with being in a stressful aspect to the Sun and Moon, this could drive the Mars engine into a hotter-than-normal state, as it strains under all that weight to keep it all moving.

There's a chance you could become a bit obsessed or overextended in your determination to keep up with your goals, live up to your highest potential and maintain a strong motivational flow of energy. Remember that it's often better to back off a bit and try again after a quick break, rather than pushing yourself to the breaking point. However, once you are able to harness this power, you will probably find that you have an abundance of fuel to keep you moving at a steady pace, as long as you don't squander it on unnecessary force.

Mercury is still retrograde (in case you hadn't noticed...) and right now is exactly conjunct the Sun. They are a mere 18 minutes of arc from being exact – which means Mercury misses being Cazimi by a silly little minute of arc, according to the traditional definition of being within 17 arc-minutes of conjunction to the Sun. Being Cazimi traditionally means the planet becomes extremely strong. Being "in the heart of the Sun," its energy is supercharged as it is merged with the Sun's. Being so close to Cazimi, I'm inclined to give it to Mercury anyway because the Sun and Mercury are moving toward each other, but only you can say if your brain cells are "on fire" in a good way or are just feeling fried to a crisp. Maybe only a bit singed around the edges a little? With Mercury being retrograde, I think most of us feel a bit crispy around the edges at the best of times. ;-)

What does this mean in the context of the Full Moon in Scorpio? For one thing, it could feel like you're in the eye of the hurricane, having passed through the first part of the retrograde cycle and catching your breath before you head into the final phase. For example, your perceptions could be picking up information from inside you and around you much farther below the surface than usual (with Mercury opposite the Moon in Scorpio).

Since Mars is in square aspect (90°) to the Sun, it is also square to Mercury. Mercury's retrograde cycle is marked by 3 passes of this Mercury-Mars square, exact on Apr.05, Apr.25 and Jun.11. Since this aspect is in effect during this already-intense Full Moon in Scorpio, this could certainly make your brain cells feel a little crispier than usual. As an example, it might be wise to avoid trying to win arguments about passionate subjects, like politics, religion or the sexual proclivities of past or present lovers. And, like the scorpion, it's probably best to avoid situations that are too hot to handle, lest you inadvertently corner yourself and lose your cool.

On the other hand Mercury retrograde square Mars could be an excellent energy to delve deeply into strenuous self-reflection – as long as you do it quickly and cleanly, like surgeon's incision. If you just hack away at shame, guilt, beating yourself up over something you were less than perfect about and other self-inflicted cruelty, then you're best to stay far away from sharp instruments – like your thoughts or your words. But if you can wield these things deftly, purposefully and honourably, then this could be an extremely powerful energy with healing potential – like lancing a boil to let all the toxicity out where you can safely wash it away.

Wedge aspect figure to Pluto at the Full Moon

Pluto, considered by many to be the modern ruler of Scorpio, forms a Wedge aspect figure with the Sun/Mercury-Moon opposition. Whereas Mars forms a stressful yet dynamic relationship to the Full Moon (through square aspects), Pluto forms a more supportive, creative connection (with trine and sextile aspects).

The two ruling planets of the Scorpio Full Moon seem to pull us in somewhat different directions and encourage us to stretch ourselves in different ways. Mars – the planet of assertiveness, anger and impulse – challenges us to question how much (or how little) we express our passionate enthusiasm (and whether that could use some adjustment). On the other hand, Pluto – the planet of transformation and rebirth – encourages us to take the massive changes that are reshaping the world today and use them, proactively and creatively, to effect change in our personal lives.

Interestingly, both of these planets are singletons in the Full Moon chart, so both have a special role to play in how events unfold right now. Mars is the only planet in Fire, making it the primary means for expressing our enthusiasm, daring and impulses. Pluto is the only planet in a Cardinal sign, and provides the central channel for how we choose our direction, pursue goals and initiate action.

The net result is that you have a choice about how to access and use your passion. You can use it to sustain your enthusiasm, energy and sense of purpose, but be careful that this doesn't simply reinforce bad habits and perpetuate problems. Or, you can use it to proactively pursue change in your life, but make sure you're prepared for the consequences by having a sturdy support system in place, and avoid unnecessary risk by taking things one step at a time.

Either way, a personal reading can help you connect to your passion in a way that will set you on fire without burning you out.

Apr.28 — Sun conjunct Mercury Retrograde (08:17 of Taurus) (Apr.29 in AU)

When the Sun conjoins Mercury Retrograde, there is a new beginning in the areas of awareness, communication, use of information and exchange of ideas. This may or may not be heralded by a recognisable event or experience, although for a day or two your consciousness may shift. Your awareness and mental concentration may take a dip into the unconscious, becoming unusually murky and muddy, or it may rise into ultra-consciousness and become suddenly clear and lucid (afterwards returning to the usual Mercury retrograde fog). A new awareness or perspective on what has unfolded during the retrograde cycle thus far may surface now, or an unworkable attitude or perception of these events may fall apart under the weight of new information. This shift of awareness may be obvious or subtle, sudden or gradual, but this transit marks a turning point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. It also marks a time when mental awareness often goes further underground, for the rest of the retrograde period, making it a little harder to operate objectively and rationally in the outside world. Spend some time in your right-brain, intuitive, non-rational mind, which can coax your mental creativity and inventiveness to the surface.

May.03 — Mercury Retrograde trine Pluto (05:14 of Taurus/Capricorn)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

This is the 2nd of 3 passes of this transit: Apr.06, May.03 and May.19.

May.04 — Sun square Mars (13:58 of Taurus/Leo)

Assertiveness, aggression and intense energy burst out under this transit. This can be a time of being pushed into taking action...or it can erupt in anger, irritation and hostility (in yourself or others). It may seem like everything pushes your buttons and rubs you the wrong way, creating conflict and putting you on edge. You may feel the impulse to burn off this excess energy through sexual activity. If you look beneath the irritation you may see a frustrated part of you that wants change, yet you have held back for some reason. Being pro-active and initiating steps for voluntary change is preferable, since you will have far more control over the process than if you get pushed into a corner and forced to act. The more preplanning you've done for this moment, the more successful you're likely to be. But if you get caught in a whirlwind of change, connect yourself to the part of you that wants change and let that ground and guide you.

May.07 — Venus sextile Mars (15:24 of Gemini/Leo) (May.08 in AU)

It is possible now to take a balanced approach to conflict, problems and projects that require effort. This can combine both a gentle touch and firm action; sensitivity and forcefulness. Negotiation and interaction with others could be aggressive and determined now, but also balanced with sensitivity and style. Any expressions of anger, frustration or discontent are more likely to be tempered with fairness, moderation and composure. You'll have to apply some effort to get these opposite energies working in sync together, but the potential and opportunity are there more-so than usual now.

May.11 – Mercury stationary Direct (02:39 Taurus; direct until Aug.20) (May.12 in AU) ("What does Retrograde mean?" "What does stationary mean?"  Read article about Mercury Retrograde.  Read article about stations.)

For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde since Apr.18, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. These past 3.5 weeks have challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again. Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow ("What's the Shadow?"), your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.

Mercury will still be virtually stationary at the time of the New Moon in Taurus. More about that in the next update!
