"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience TAURUS energy in your life.

As Zodiac signs go, Taurus the Bull is about as physical as they come! It's an Earth sign, meaning that it's all about the physical plane – all that's tangible, concrete and real. And it's a Fixed sign, meaning it's about stabilization, endurance and tenacity.

In Taurus you get into sensory awareness and enjoyment – sight, sound, smell, taste, touch. Taurus is your connection to your physical body, as well as the symbolic extensions of your body – money, possessions, skills and other resources. It is also the values you hold that guide you in deciding how, where and why to spend, invest and share your abundance.

Mercury has been retrograde in Taurus until just recently (Apr.18 to May.11), and is still virtually stationary, giving it a very strong role in the Bull's New Moon. A lot of people found Mercury retrograde in Taurus to be a very dense energy that could be very tiring physically and mentally.

Now we have a renewal of Taurus energy with the New Moon in Taurus. Hmm... Does this mean we'll have a repeat of that Mercury retrograde experience? Goodness, I hope not! Unlikely. What's more likely is that we'll take what we learned from our Mercury retrograde journey and have an opportunity to apply it in a whole new way (New Moon). Reinvest it, as it were.

Now: here's the thing. There are some whopping transits coming up over the next couple of months, and in the New Moon chart some of these can already be seen. So this reinvestment of your material abundance, physical gratification and concrete values is going to take on a context that stretches far beyond your immediate environment and circumstances.

For starters, we see the beginnings of the Jupiter-Saturn opposition, which becomes exact on May.23. This contributes a tension of extremes of freedom and expansion versus limitation and responsibility.

Jupiter and Saturn have a 20-year joint cycle (from conjunction to conjunction), reaching the opposition (180°) around 10 years after the conjunction. Similar to the Sun-Moon cycle of New Moons and Full Moons, the first half of the Jupiter-Saturn cycle (from conjunction to opposition) sees the development of the vision and conceptualization of Jupiter combined with the structure and hard work of Saturn. In the second half of the cycle (opposition to conjunction again), whatever has emerged from the first half will be applied, integrated and perfected.

This opposition is therefore the fruition point of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction that took place in 2000. As such, it is a time when you can pat yourself on the back for what you've accomplished in the first half of the cycle, since the conjunction of 2000.

Jupiter is also zeroing in on the conjunction to Uranus, which won't become exact until both of them have moved into Aries in a couple of weeks. This is a very powerful merging of two energies that enthusiastically pursue freedom, liberation and expanding beyond existing boundaries. Astrologer Gary P. Caton recently pointed out that the last time Jupiter and Uranus were conjunct in Pisces, there was a devastating flood all along the Mississippi River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico where we currently have another major catastrophe unfolding as oil continues to spill into open waters where it threatens the ecology of land and sea.

On a personal level, the building of Jupiter-Uranus energy in the Watery sign of Pisces could be amplifying your emotions, sensitivity, intuition, psychic awareness or spiritual experiences. If you have any energy in these areas that has been pent up and may be longing to be expressed, brought into awareness or integrated into the rest of your psyche, this could be a somewhat disquieting experience if you are not open to its emergence.

Best to find a healthy outlet for whatever it is – for example, art, music, spiritual or religious ritual (performed with experienced people who know what they're doing), writing, learning, or even just putting yourself into a new environment to open your psyche to something new. Just make sure you have a solid lifeline ready, in case you lose your way (e.g. a friend to call, an advisor who knows the territory, or prepared with information and knowledge about what's stirring deep inside you).

Two T-squares, not yet a Grand Cross

Pluto in Capricorn forms a wide T-square to Jupiter-Uranus opposite Saturn, which will become increasingly close over the coming months and years. Pluto playing mediator to this triangle is a bit like Darth Vader as a judge for Solar System's Got Talent featuring Saturn tuning the piano and the Jupiter-Uranus duo playing the musical wine glasses. In other words, everyone's going to need a lot of patience, flexibility and not be dependent on the level of applause to reassure one's self-confidence.

On the other side of the zodiac from Pluto is Venus in Gemini, close enough to the Saturn-Jupiter/Uranus opposition to form a wide T-square, but still too far from Pluto to form the opposition necessary to complete the Grand Cross. Venus being the planetary ruler of Taurus, she provides a special connection between the configuration and the New Moon.

Venus' presence in the T-square suggests the opposition's tension – the urge to break free of conformity versus the need to hunker down into the nitty-gritty of responsibilities in order to reap the benefits down the road – could be played out in social situations, communication with loved ones and/or financial decisions. As Venus moves closer to the opposition to Pluto (exact on May.23), the importance of those interactions, dialogues and decisions are likely to become more apparent. In fact, Venus might even join in as a talent contestant rapping about the juggling of checkbooks, lovers and Facebook profiles.

Almost-T-square aspect figure

The Sun-Moon conjunction (the New Moon) is at the apex of an almost-T-square, being square to Mars on one side and square to Neptune on the other, but Mars is still a bit far off from the opposition to Neptune which won't be exact until Jun.04. So on one hand, there's the residue of old confrontations lingering in the air (separating square to Mars). And on the other hand, there's a wistful but ambiguous promise of magical solutions calling out like a siren's song (applying square to Neptune).

On a practical level, it would be wise to be especially cautious about anything that smells like a "get rich quick" scheme or anything that promises to make your dreams come true with little or no effort or investment on your part. This Sun/Moon in Taurus square Neptune seems to echo the Saturn (earthy realism) opposite Jupiter-Uranus in Pisces (faith-based speculation). On a more personal level, these collective energies could be an awakening to the ways that your spiritual connection to the Universe needs some attention and adjustment. Too much realism or too much magical thinking might need to be brought into a more workable balance.

Wedge aspect figure

The Sun-Moon conjunction also forms a Wedge aspect figure with the Saturn-Jupiter/Uranus opposition. This suggests that you'll get more out of that transit if you aim for a practical approach that keeps you grounded, and that strives to achieve stabilized growth. It is possible to use your ingenuity, inventiveness and imagination to find solutions to old problems that need to be resolved before you can proceed with your longer-term goals.

Overall, this can be a very productive time when you can create a plan for how to make adjustments to balance different or conflicting parts of your life. How you can do that is the gift of the Taurus New Moon. The answer will be a little different for each one of us. It will be important to draw on valuable resources to help you build a strong plan based on awareness, information, realism and faith.

May.17 – Mars leaves the Retrograde Shadow (19:41 of Leo; until Nov.18.2011) ("What's the Shadow?"  Read article about the Shadow.  Read article about Mars Retrograde.)

Mars now leaves the span of the Zodiac where it went retrograde between Dec.20.2009 and Mar.10.2010. Mars first entered this zodiacal space (the Shadow) in October 2009, and now Mars leaves it. This brings closure to a very long-term journey of growth, transformation and ambition. During this time you have worked through issues, opportunities and challenges about aggression, anger, sexuality, physical activity, desires, ambition and taking action to get what you want.

So...what have you learned, Dorothy? Think back on the last 7 months or so (since Mars entered the Retrograde Shadow). What was happening back at the beginning of this journey? How have your perceptions or feelings about it changed over that time? Or maybe they haven't changed, but have been confirmed, reinforced or validated? It's important to get a sense of what this time has been for you, because how you "frame it" is how you'll carry it with you and inside you for the next 2 years (when Mars goes retrograde again). And since Mars is all about anger, resentment, hostility and conflict, these are probably not qualities you want to hold in your psyche. Instead, it might be more productive and healthy to focus on Mars' more endearing qualities: being assertive, proactive, enthusiastic, motivated and courageous.

May.17 – Venus square Jupiter (26:53 of Gemini/Pisces)

"Your eyes are bigger than your stomach" (as Mom used to say). That means you are more likely now to over-indulge, especially in the areas of relationships, spending, desires, pleasure and social contact. Your desire for fulfilment and satisfaction may exceed your resources, and you might not even realise it until the bill comes in later (probably under a Saturn transit ;-). You may also find you require more knowledge, understanding, faith, freedom or optimism than you have available, making it tempting to compensate by inflating what you really have. For example, you might want to resort to flattery, manipulation or over-optimism in an effort to make up for a lack of genuine confidence, rapport or preparation. However, this can also be a time when your creativity is running high and you are able to pull rabbits out of your hat on a moment's notice. The problem is that you could over-extend yourself by doing so.

May.17 – Sun sextile Jupiter (26:59 of Taurus/Pisces) (May.18 in UK, AU)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it has the potential to click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time. Just be careful that all this self-assurance and "knowing" doesn't backfire, by overestimating the extent of your knowledge or underestimating the reaction of your audience. It is possible to become a bit self-indulgent under this transit, so be careful not to overdo it. Beyond a reasonable caution, this is a transit to enjoy!

May.18 – Venus square Saturn (27:57 of Gemini/Virgo)

Finances, relationships, social contacts and/or pleasures may seem blocked or require extra effort right now. Manifesting your desires may require added hard work, but this struggle could also bring you closer to your goals. It may feel like there is a huge rock blocking your path that keeps you from fulfilling your heart's desire. It may be necessary to face some difficult aspect of your situation before it is possible to know how to proceed. This is ultimately a problem to be solved by confronting that which is unrealistic, unworkable, or just not in your best interest. This can also be a time when you arrive at a crossroads and must make some firm choices, or when circumstances might force you to change your direction. This transit can make your choice clear, although it might not be the one you hoped for.

May.18 – Venus trine Neptune (28:39 of Gemini/Aquarius) (May.19 in AU)

This can be a time of romance, creativity, and a sense of oneness with the natural beauty of all that exists in the world. On a social or intimate level, things may run smoothly – even a bit magically! So be sure you are clear about what you really want. In terms of finances and material worth, this can be a time of blessings and abundance that could seem to appear out of nowhere. But be careful – it can also be a time of overspending and wondering where the money went! Your natural beauty and warmth shines through now, so it is a good time to peek out from behind any faηade of glamour or illusion you might be cloaked in. You are likely to see the very best in others (and they in you), so that negotiation, interaction and attraction can seem to flow effortlessly. This magical attraction energy could also open you up to seeing wonderful qualities in others that may or may not actually be there, so do a reality check with a trusted friend before you make any important choices.

May.18 – Sun trine Saturn (27:56 of Taurus/Virgo) (May.19 in UK, AU)

This is a great time to apply yourself to serious work. You may feel especially self-sufficient and independent, with a strong and clear sense of self and purpose. There is support for your ambitions as long as you stay grounded and practical in how you approach them, which should come easily right now. Your ability to cooperate and feel comfortable with authority figures is likely to be high, along with your capacity to embrace your own authority and make solid decisions. This is a time when you are more likely to feel grounded and deal with problems in a practical, decisive way. Your energy may be more serious than "party animal," but even if you are in "party mode" it will be easier to realistically know your limits and not overdo it. If you've been waiting for the right time to move forward with or manifest a project or plan that you've been putting together (or wanting to), this could be the time when that happens. The final launch or manifestation may or may not happen now, but you will probably be able to at least move forward in some important steps.

May.19 – Sun square Neptune (28:39 of Taurus/Aquarius) (May.20 in AU)

Your ideals, hopes and wishful thinking may loom a little too large during this time, making you prone to disappointment and disillusionment. You might want a fantasy or dream to come true so much that you disconnect from the reality that seems to be in the way – only to find that the obstacle was serving a positive purpose after all. Your imagination may be very active now, but not easy to control or balance with reality. However, it can be a very creative time if you're able to harness that imagination for productive use. Unconscious urges and longings may be especially close to the surface, so you have an opportunity to learn more about the hidden forces that drive you (and perhaps distort your view of the world around you). Spiritually, you might discover that your yearning for enlightenment is not the straightforward path you had hoped for, but it can be just as valuable (although disappointing) to discover what is *not* your best path. Emotionally you may feel a bit overwhelmed, discouraged or confused. On the plus side, you have an opportunity to observe a deeper part of you, which is usually camouflaged against the distracting background of day-to-day life. There is tremendous creative, spiritual and healing potential to be found by listening to and working with the inner voices from those depths.

May.19 – Mercury Direct trine Pluto (04:58 of Taurus/Capricorn) (May.20 in AU)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

This is the last of 3 passes of this transit: Apr.06, May.03 and May.19.

May.19 – Venus square Uranus (29:43 of Gemini/Pisces) (May.20 in AU)

Under this transit, you may be tempted by impulse spending, or you might be somewhat erratic in your use of resources. This can result in unpredictable or unstable finances, so double check your bank accounts and credit cards before you draw on them. It is also a time when the way you relate to others (or they to you) could be somewhat inconsistent, fickle or impulsive. If your relationships or financial situation have been struggling with difficulties for a while, this transit could bring a lingering problem to the surface and require attention. On one hand, this could be a welcome breath of fresh air that cuts through the complexity of your problems and puts the cards on the table (despite the stress and conflict that likely triggered it). Or, you might feel resistance to making these changes and instead experience this as a time of unwelcome instability, upset and adjustment. However, this may be a good way to break free of excessive restraint, control or structure, which allows new possibilities to emerge that couldn't do so otherwise.

May.19 – Venus enters Cancer (until Jun.14) (May.20 in UK, AU)

Your focus in relationships may shift for a while to family, loved ones and people in your support system. You may also find that your interactions with others takes on a quality that echoes the past, perhaps childhood, and you want to reach out to connect with others more than usual – or to avoid it if those echoes are not pleasant ones. You could be especially sensitive to getting your emotional needs met, or how others want their needs to be met. Interactions with others may bring up a deep need to belong and to connect and bond with others on a personal level. The need to feel secure and safe could come up in a variety of forms now – either directly as a feeling of vulnerability, or indirectly disguised as defensiveness or manipulation. This could also a time when you want to be somewhat protective and cautious in your handling of money, possessions and other resources, striving to conserve and cultivate these areas in order to nurture them for future growth.

May.20 – Venus trine Chiron (00:53 of Cancer/Pisces) (May.21 in AU)

Healing and rebalancing are possible now, especially in the areas of relationships, finance, resources and values. Any problems that have persisted in these areas lately could benefit from an influx of helpful and healing resources now. Relationships and interactions of all kinds can benefit now, since it can be easier to see the beauty and value in others whom you might usually dislike or feel ill at ease with (or they with you). Negotiations and strategic efforts to resolve conflicts may go smoothly now, especially when you balance the results in everyone's interests. You may also be able to attract what you need to heal your wounds (physical, psychological, spiritual, etc.). Like it says in the "Serenity Prayer," you may now find it a bit easier to accept that which you cannot change, while finding you make progress with the things you can.

May.20 – Sun sextile Uranus (29:46 of Taurus/Pisces) (May.21 in AU)

You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are more finely tuned during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Just have fun pushing the envelope! You may also find you want things to be spontaneous and new and out-of-the-ordinary so much that it's hard not to feel restless and dissatisfied with ordinary life right now. But remember that trying to plan spontaneity defeats the purpose of the exercise. And if you are hungering for something new but can't seem to find something satisfying, try digging a little deeper to see what is driving that hunger from inside you. You could find surprising answers.

May.20 – Sun enters Gemini (until Jun.21) (May.21 in UK, AU)

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Gemini! This is the time of year for the cosmic Twins to party, but it is also a time for all of us to explore our dual nature and our sentient awareness that emerges from it. Communication and exchange of information and ideas are specialties of Gemini, and this period brings these areas into focus for everyone. If you're looking for ideas to explore your Gemini nature, try writing your thoughts down, or listen to the buzz of activity around you, or express your observations in both verbal and non-verbal ways. Pay special attention to conversations with others, and be alert to the new information that can be learned there. Connect with your Inner Imp and let yourself be playful, clever, cheerful and fun! Learn a new word every day. Find out the names of things you never even noticed before. Read a book or newspaper or newsletter...or write one! Ride the bus to an area of town you've never been to and see what you find. And remember that it is largely through our interactions with other people and with the immediate world around us that we develop consciousness, perception and mental focus. Therefore, use this as an opportunity to increase your awareness of your immediate surroundings. Exchange information and ideas with others. Use your ability to communicate in every way you can think of. And let yourself be curious, clever and playful!

May.21 – Sun square Chiron (00:54 of Gemini/Pisces)

Your self-confidence and patience may be a bit strained right now, stretched by the urge to break free of chronic constraints. Motivation and self-esteem may seem to sag and suffer from old problems that you thought were resolved. This is probably because you are seeing "the flaws in the system" that are preventing you from getting the results you want. It will help to take a fresh approach to your situation. You may need to let go of what you think the results "should be" or how they should come to you. Be open to getting what you want in a different form than you were expecting. You may have to work extra hard for results now, especially if it means having to find a different route to success. If it seems like a door of opportunity has closed, look for an unexpected advantage or hidden alternative. This could allow you to tap into other opportunities that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

May.23 – Jupiter opposite Saturn (27:52 of Pisces/Virgo)

The forces of freedom, confidence and expansion (Jupiter) are having a tug of war with the forces of responsibility, humility and pruning back (Saturn). You could easily find yourself swinging from trying to be disciplined, productive and staying on the "straight and narrow," to wanting to break free of all that to roam and explore new horizons, and back to buckling down to what you're "supposed to" be doing because you want the results this can give you. Another possibility is that you could find yourself taking on one of these extremes and then polarizing to someone else who personifies the other extreme. So you might be the responsible one and then resent someone else because they're being footloose and fancy free. Or you might be the one taking wing with new ideas, travels or spiritual inspiration, and annoyed when someone else tries to drag you back down to earth to fulfil what's expected of you instead. We could easily see this drama played out on a community or global scale between people, organizations, political agendas or interests that are in conflict with each other.

This is the first of 3 passes of this transit: May.23.2010, Aug.16.2010 and Mar.28.2011. This first pass takes place in Pisces/Virgo, while the second two passes happen in Aries/Libra. There are a couple of further implications about this transit. One is that it is part of the Cardinal Cross aspect figure that happens this year: Jupiter/Uranus opposite Saturn, T-squared by Pluto, and various other planets filling in the space opposite Pluto at different times. (In particular, this will happen at the Lunar Eclipse on Jun.26. "Interesting" times ahead!! More on that in a later update!) So this transit is just one of several energies that are combining and interacting over the coming months, within a context that is much greater than the sum of its parts. Overall, we are heading into a time of major change and transformation that will continue to unfold over the next several years.

Another implication of the Jupiter-Saturn opposition is that it is the fruition point of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Taurus that happened in 2000. Think back to 2000 and what began in your life at that time which has developed since then. Certainly, the events of September 11th 2001 have rather overshadowed other things that came before, but think back to what was happening in your life during that year. What has come of that? Can you see how there is an essence of what emerged at that time, that has grown and developed since then? This transit represents a time when you can look back between now and then and take stock of how far you've grown.

The next 10 years (until the next Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in December 2020) will be a time when you take what has developed and integrate it, like fitting a piece within a larger puzzle that is your life. Now that you "have" this quality or ability or knowledge or perspective or skill or whatever "it" is, what can you do with it? How can your life be changed as a result? What can you do now with your life that you couldn't do 10 years ago? This Jupiter-Saturn opposition represents a turning point in this greater process, where instead of working to develop whatever it is, you are now challenged to find ways to utilize it.

May.23 – Venus opposite Pluto (04:53 of Cancer/Capricorn) (May.24 in UK, AU)

Under this transit you could experience great intensity and challenge in your relationships or financial matters. It is a time to delve into the depths of your personal issues that associated with relationships, finances, resources and values. That means being willing to examine the under-the-surface dynamics and hidden patterns that affect these areas of your life. These emerging patterns could indicate a need to come to terms with your "Shadow" – this could include unconscious hidden agendas, secret desires, obsessions or power games. You have an opportunity now to learn more about how you project this "Shadow" onto others through your interactions, expectations, hopes and fears. At its best, this can be a time to transform fear into fortitude and powerlessness into endurance. By being willing to negotiate and work with your fears, feelings of intimidation or efforts to gain empowerment through self-honesty, you have the potential to create a win-win situation.

Sabian Symbol Sagittarius 7: Cupid knocking at the door.

Sabian Symbol for the
Full Moon in Sagittarius

Sagittarius 7

Cupid knocking at the door.

In this Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") we see the Roman god Cupid who was originally the god Eros in Greek mythology.

Cupid was the son of Venus and Mars and he would shoot arrows into humans and cause them to fall in love. He is still part of Western popular culture as part of the Valentine's Day symbology. Both Cupid and Eros symbolize love.

Cupid was commanded by his jealous mother Venus to curse the princess Psyche (meaning "soul") to fall in love with a hideous man, but instead Cupid fell in love with her himself. Psyche was instructed by Cupid to never look on his face, but she was pressured to do so by her jealous sisters. When Psyche looked upon Cupid, he abandoned her.

Psyche searched for him and was finally helped by Venus. After several demanding labours, including a trip to the Underworld from where few people ever emerged, Psyche was finally reunited with Cupid and they married.

When Cupid comes knocking at the door, we are like Psyche who must take love on faith if we are to keep it. But if we look too closely and scrutinize or analyze our experience, we usually lose its magic. If we are able to find it again, it usually requires a process of transformation (the Underworld) where we must shed our preconceived notions of what love should and should not be.

This symbol suggests that there is some new potential or possibility or opportunity knocking at your door that you must not scrutinize too much or you could lose its gifts. That doesn't mean you can't question whether it's right for you, but it does mean that even if you hesitate out of caution, eventually you must simply trusting the process. Like Jupiter and Uranus, even after taking aim and carefully choosing your destination, it all comes down to taking that flying leap into Aries.

This opportunity might manifest literally in the form of romantic love, or it could be more spiritual or metaphorical as a chance to encounter your heart's desire in some other form.

Sagittarius is all about expansion, although in this case we're expanding in all directions at once!

Sagittarius, like its ruling planet Jupiter, is all about taking a multitude of bits of information and combining them together to make something that is greater than the sum of its parts. This usually involves finding a greater sense of meaning about the collection of information. And in that meaning, it is hoped that wisdom can be found. Certain one comes away with new knowledge and understanding of whatever it is. Is that the same as wisdom? Is that the same as meaning?

Wisdom and meaning usually involve integrating information along multiple levels; for example, psychological, spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, social and so on. When you understand something at one level, it will often reflect how it will behave at a different level. If you can't grasp something at one level, try a different level and you can sometimes pick up the archetypal thread that you can follow back to a different layer. Similarly, wisdom can often identify repeating themes that appear in different forms and connect together seemingly unrelated events, situations or experiences.

For example, at the Full Moon in Sagittarius we have several markings of transformational and structural changes happening. Any Full Moon, for starters, is an indication of an evolutional turning point where we move from building something up to spreading it around. The focus changes from inhale to exhale; from accumulation to dispersal; from attraction to transmission. Instead of developing and cultivating, we change our focus to application and integration.

We also have the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction – still in Pisces but rapidly approaching Aries. In fact, Uranus is in the last minute of the last degree of the last sign of the zodiac. You can't split that hair much finer than that! You can imagine that Uranus has taken the leap to change signs. He has chosen a landing point, took a deep breath, pushed off with both feet, and is now sailing through the air between Pisces and Aries. In mid-transition, Uranus is poised in a great swan dive pose. (Read the new article on Uranus in Aries!)

Jupiter is close behind. Imagine Jupiter in Pisces as a beautiful, flowing, undulating jellyfish that puffs itself up in order to propel itself forward. Jupiter is the planetary ruler of the New Moon, and being is its other sign of Pisces is very strong. Although hopefully not as dangerous as a jellyfish, since Jupiter is conjunct erratic, explosive, radical Uranus, there might be a few "stingers" hidden in its folds!

One such stinger could be a reaction to Saturn, which opposes Jupiter and Uranus from Virgo. Saturn is stationary at the time of the Full Moon, about to go direct in just 2 days. This is Saturn changing direction to head back into Libra for the final time, so he's packing a solid punch trying to make the most of his last days in Virgo while he can. Any reality you didn't face the first time around late last year will be coming back to haunt now. Were you at a crossroads at that time? Were you faced with having to climb a mountain and now sure how to do it? Teacher Saturn is back to see how you made out with the homework you were assigned and to give you your final grade. You might feel like you're backsliding now, falling back into issues or problems that you thought you'd put behind you. Don't fret! Just go back over your "notes" of what you learned late last year and since then. You're probably more prepared than you realize for this "pop quiz." Just follow the formula and do your best – even Saturn in Virgo knows that's all any of us can do.

Under the stress of Saturn's "final exam," you might become a bit distracted or startled by Jupiter and Uranus shrieking "YeeeeHAAAAWWWW!!!" as they take a flying leap into Aries. The ensuing argument is likely to gain the attention of the stern schoolmaster, Pluto in Capricorn, who (after some careful consideration of the matter) will probably send everyone to detention where they can cool their heels and reflect on the consequences and implications of their misdeeds.

Pluto wants nothing less than accountability and a solid reassurance that calm will prevail while he sets about revising the rules to deal with the bratty duo, Jupiter and Uranus—who by this time are scheming up plans to set off firecrackers and write graffiti all over the detention room walls (something about "Pluto is a stinky booger-brain who's not even a real planet.") Saturn, horrified that their misbehaviour reflects poorly on his careful hard work, just wants to know if he can rewrite his final exam. Pluto says no but Saturn can at least finish what he started.

All of this drama could manifest in your own life as anxiety from the tension between the part of you that's trying to "do the right thing" and the part that wants to just thumb your nose at the whole boring mess, while trying to dodge the possible consequences imposed by the Powers That Be in your life. Best to finish what you've started (like Saturn) before you throw over the civilized world as you know it in favour of feeling liberated, adventurous and playful (like Jupiter and Uranus). And as far as Pluto, the stern schoolmaster, goes – remember that you have the power and the right to decide what is the best path for you, but also remember that you'll have to accept whatever results from what you've chosen.

There are six – count 'em, SIX opposition aspects in the Full Moon chart! Every planet is involved in an opposition (180°) except Mercury – and even he does if you include the asteroid Pallas Athena. These oppositions don't all interact neatly with each other and, in fact, send the chart shooting off in all directions. This is where the multi-layered integration becomes important. It will help immensely to grasp whatever you're doing at an archetypal level, which can then be applied in a number of different ways, contexts, areas and perspectives. The key is to stay flexible so that whatever happens, you can pull up the app for that and apply your Sagittarian Full Moon archetypal magic wand.

If you start to get all tangled up with so many different options, possibilities, viewpoints and decisions, give me a shout and I can help you get clear about how to tell your best path from the dead ends.

Jun.04 – Chiron stationary Retrograde (00:59 of Pisces) ("What does Retrograde mean?"  "What's a Station?"  Read article about Retrogrades.  Read article about Stations.)

The Retrograde station can be felt for up to a week before and after this date. Since Chiron is often about health, you may find health issues coming to the foreground now. General issues about wounding, healing and hurt—physically, psychologically and/or spiritually—may come to a turning point now, making it necessary to take some time for healing, reconstruction, and reconciliation of the energies that are out of balance in your life. The retrograde station (now) begins this process, which gradually unfolds over the next 5 months. Focus your energies on acknowledging the areas that need healing in your life—literally or figuratively. Don't forget that although there are areas that still need healing, you have made progress on much of this in the past. It's important to balance your acknowledgement of the work yet to be done with recognition of what you have already achieved in the past.

Jun.04 – Mars opposite Neptune (28:41 of Leo/Aquarius) (Jun.05 in AU)

For up to a week before and after today, you have a chance to discover and work with your blind spots and the hidden motives that trip you up. You can get a better look at the ideals, hopes, longing and dreams that motivate you. Your actions may reach for heights of inspiration or the ecstasy of surrender. This could bring release of tension...or an encounter with illusion and deception – and it might not be easy to know which is which. It could feel like you are spinning your wheels or "shadow-boxing" and not sure why. You may be dealing with a hidden agenda or unconscious motives (yours or someone else's). You might be trying to apply a proactive solution to an ambiguous situation, and wonder why it doesn't work very well. Responding to conflicts or obstacles in a passive-aggressive or manipulative way could be tempting under this transit, since it may be hard to know how to take direct and effective action. Resentment might become a defiant way to express "toothless" anger. Part of the problem may be that you are fighting against your own unconscious idealism. Feelings of disappointment, helplessness or frustration may bring up deeper feelings from your unconscious, making it difficult to know how to respond effectively in the here-and-now. Being honest with yourself about what's really going on inside you will go a long way toward increasing your empowerment.

Jun.06 – Jupiter enters Aries (until Sep.08; then from Jan.22.2011 to Jun.04.2011)

Have you ever seen one of those time-lapse videos of a rose blooming? Instead of taking hours or days, the sequence takes seconds for the rose to go from a bud into a full bloom. The effect is magnificent, even startling, as you see the blossom explode into fullness. That's kind of what Jupiter in Aries can be like! All things Jupiter suddenly burst into fullness, which can include your self-confidence, knowledge, understanding and sense of spiritual connection to something greater than yourself. Since Aries is about the projection of the self into the world, this transit can also boost your sense of self and give you a stronger experience about being right and having "the answer." The trick is that it can strengthen not just the beneficial side of self-connection and understanding, it can also expand arrogance and a domineering, opinionated attitude. Being "full of oneself" is a danger under this transit, and it can help to do a reality check to see if your amplified sense of self-esteem might be coming at the expense of seeing everyone else as wrong, misinformed or "beneath you." The ability to instantly assess a situation can quickly teeter into snap judgments and jumping to conclusions that may not be correct, sensitive, compassionate or in context with the bigger picture. Jupiter in Aries is like a big wild horse that needs a strong bridle to keep it from galloping over the top, and when you ride it (instead of it riding you) it can be a powerful, potent, charismatic force of nature that can inspire and instil confidence and wisdom all around you. Use it wisely.

Jun.07 – Mars enters Virgo (until Jul.29)

You are likely to have a lot of energy for working in practical ways under this transit. This can be a good time to respond to projects, challenges and obstacles with some analytical problem-solving. It may be easier now to take action in ways that are adaptable and flexible to match the situation at hand. However, it is also possible for your actions to become fragmented or bogged down in detail, so try to approach what you do with a purpose and an easily reachable goal in mind. Health issues may be a focus now, either out of necessity (health problems may flare up) or out of motivation (determination to improve your health). If you are looking for a new job, this could be a good time to get focused and go after what you want. It is also a good time to devote your energy to service of some kind. For example, you could help a friend move, or volunteer at the local food bank, or just perform some "acts of random kindness."

Jun.08 – Jupiter conjunct Uranus (00:17 of Aries)

This is an extremely powerful combination that merges wisdom, intuition, brilliance and immense potential! Both planets are about seeing the big picture, seeing things from a broader perspective and the use of knowledge. This can be a time when brilliant ideas abound, new inventions are born and information may be combined in totally unique ways. Both planets are about potential – seed energy that can blossom into something greater than itself. This transit can herald a time when you break free of old restraints based on new information, knowledge or understanding about your confining situation. In a situation where you've been struggling to find an answer to a problem, it can lead to a breakthrough – what is called an "ah-ha!" moment. The answer that comes to you might surprise you, even shock you. It might not be what you were expecting, and therefore you might be tempted to dismiss it, reject it or rationalize around it if it's not what you were hoping for. The answer might lead you to cast off old attachments, especially involving old beliefs or conclusions that no longer serve you well. The answer might require that you let go of everything you thought you knew or believed, to clear your point of view so that you can take in a whole new perspective. On the other hand, it might show that you must clear away old points of view so that you can face the truth about something, and in that sense it's not so much that you need to see something new as to accept something that's already there that you've been avoiding. The idea is to allow your natural intuition to speak to you with clarity, so that your preconceived notions of what to expect don't get in the way. Depending on your spiritual orientation, this might feel a bit like God or your Higher Self or the Universe is sending you a message.

This is the first of 3 passes of this transit: Jun.08, Sep.18 and Jan.04.2011. The whole transit will be generally felt in its effects from April 2010 through February 2011, while this first pass is most powerful (within a one-degree orb; very tight) from May.30 to Jun.18. This is the only pass that occurs in Aries; the other two take place in Pisces. The fact that this pass takes place at zero degrees of Aries is very significant and powerful! This is the archetypal initiation degree, since it begins the sequence of the zodiac – the first degree of the first sign. In this sense, any "ah-ha" experience could be unusually forceful, cathartic and revolutionary in its effect. This can be a powerful transit under which to begin a new project, break an old habit or make any kind of change. For best effect: if you're ending something, breaking a habit or getting rid of something (like spring cleaning), begin this before the New Moon on Jun.12. If you're beginning something, launching a new project, clearing the way for something new or initiating a fresh direction, begin it after the New Moon.

Jun.08 – Mercury trine Saturn (27:54 of Taurus/Virgo) (Jun.05 in AU)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and pursuit of your goals now. Your mental outlook is likely to be calm and grounded. This is a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your goals. You may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the process of pursuing those past goals. Or, you might find you are able to draw on past achievements to assist and support your current goals and plans. It is a good transit to bring structure to your thoughts and communication. You may find it's a little easier to accept authority – yours or someone else's – and that you are able to speak authoritatively about things about which you have knowledge or experience.

Jun.08 – Mars opposite Chiron (00:58 of Virgo/Pisces) (Jun.09 in UK, AU)

Your efforts and physical/emotional/mental energy may struggle with fundamental limitations and latent imperfections under this transit. Weakness or chronic problems in health may flare up now, especially if you are under a lot of stress. It will help to do whatever is necessary to support and take care of yourself. You may find it works better to minimize or prevent deterioration, rather than to attempt a complete cure of whatever ails you. Emotional health may also be affected, bringing out latent issues related to anger, sexuality, assertiveness or courage. This is a time when you can probably see all these problem areas more clearly, and as a result it can seem like they are getting worse. While this may or may not actually be true, you are in a position to respond to these issues in a different way now – precisely because you are able to see the nature of the problems more objectively and clearly. So don't allow yourself to just be intimidated by difficult experiences you might have now; use them to take steps toward a new well-being.

Jun.09 – Mercury square Neptune (28:40 of Taurus/Aquarius)

Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.

Jun.10 – Mercury enters Gemini (until Jun.25)

Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini, so the mind wants to fly fast and free. Communication and perceptions may come and go like a fresh breeze through an open window. This can create a wide variety of ideas but not necessarily productive application of those ideas. You might find it a little easier to articulate words, sharpen your mental focus, and collect and analyze your thoughts and information. This can give wings to your ideas and self-expression, but remember that you'll have to back up any promises and "fast talk" with action and substance. Let this be a time to explore possibilities and enjoy social interaction, rather than jump to final conclusions. Collect the raw data and exchange ideas, but be aware that understanding the broader meaning will likely come later.

Jun.10 – Mercury sextile Uranus (00:20 of Gemini/Aries)

There is potential for brilliance and excitement under this transit. You may be more spontaneous, upbeat and eccentric than usual. If you are used to a fairly predictable lifestyle, it is a time when you may be inspired to experiment with something out of character. If you are used to being whacky, zany and impulsive, this transit can provide opportunities to express this. You may have an increased ability to "think outside the box" if you stretch your mind a little, and there is the possibility of having an "ah-ha!" experience, when answers and realisations fall into place. There is also the possibility of being mentally restless, so that it's hard to slow down your thoughts or apply yourself seriously to your responsibilities. Your attention span may be a bit short for a couple of days. This energy can be used to consider new ideas that seemed outlandish or impossible before, and see new potential in them.

Jun.10 – Mercury sextile Jupiter (00:33 of Gemini/Aries)

You may have an abundance of ideas and words to express them under this transit. There is the potential (if you reach for it) to put ideas, facts and thoughts together into a cohesive whole. You may find you can understand the overall patterns in a situation, or you are able to see the Big Picture, better than usual. New insights and a change of perspective may abound, as your stream of consciousness flows abundantly with optimism and visionary possibilities. You may find yourself more talkative than usual, as you try to share and convey the new ideas, inspiration and knowledge coming into your mind. Write down your best ideas for later development, since you may be having too much fun now playing with ideas to want to stop and make them manifest just yet. There is a chance that you may be so elated and confident that you might come across as a bit overbearing or even as a "know-it-all," so be sure to listen too.

Jun.10 – Mercury square Chiron (00:58 of Gemini/Pisces) (Jun.11 in AU)

Your mental focus and perceptions may feel a bit strained right now. You could find yourself locked in a struggle of indecision that stems from a "glass half empty" versus "glass half full" dilemma. It may be difficult to stay objective and evenly balanced in your perspective, but by working with this you could also find a new mental focus that gives you increased clarity. It might be tempting to sink into cynicism as a way to deal with what seems like a no-win situation. On the other hand, this transit could bring your mental perspective to a kind of "healing crisis" that forces you to get a better grip on the ideas, communication and frame of mind that have been problematic for you. Instead of reaching for extremes (hoping this will clarify the path in front of you), it will help more if you can take a few steps back to allow all the conflicting and out-of-sync elements to coexist together – creative paradox. If you have been in denial about something, this could be a turning point that allows you to grapple with the complex reality of your situation.

Jun.11 – Mercury square Mars (02:15 of Gemini/Virgo)

Fiery speech, argument and hot debate characterise this transit. This could come in the form of conflict, or it might be stimulating and challenging – or both! One thing to watch out for is that you may have a short fuse for a temper, and the same may be true for others around you. It can be a time when you blurt out things you later regret, or you might finally find the courage to do something that's long overdue. The problem is that one can easily look like the other, and what feels like courage in the moment might look more like reckless haste in retrospect. Harsh words can't always be taken back, so keep a grip on your objectivity and better judgment while you're verbally fighting the dragons. Use this energy to stoke your motivational fires, and use your ideas to generate positive action. It can help to pace your mental energy like racing a horse, which can harness abundant energy to fuel your decisions, courage and resolve.

This is the last of 3 passes of this transit: Apr.05, Apr.25 and Jun.11. Although Mercury has technically left the retrograde Shadow ("What the Shadow?") it sometimes take a bit longer to catch up to other transiting planets that it aspects during its retrograde cycle. In this case, you could be challenged to make a decision about a problem or situation you were wrestling with back in April and during Mercury's recent retrograde cycle (Apr.04 to May.29). Or, you might find a similar conflict comes back to haunt you, which gives you a chance to see it from a new perspective based on what you learned during the retrograde cycle.
