"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience GEMINI energy in your life.

Where to start.....? There's so much going on in the chart of the New Moon in Gemini that even a self-respecting Gemini would be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed by information overload!

Gemini is all about information – gathering it, processing it, expressing it, sharing it, exchanging it with others, communicating it, writing it down, talking about it... And then there's what kind of information – facts, ideas, information, observations, perceptions, intuition, psychic impressions, body language, spoken language, sign language, etc. With this New Moon, we have a vast buffet that will satisfy anyone's mental hunger!

Gemini is ruled by the trickster Mercury (Hermes to the Greeks). Hermes is the clever little guy whose debut act was to steal Apollo's cattle and then mess with his head by making his getaway in retrograde (backward) motion so that his footprints faced the opposite way. Thankfully Mercury is well away from being retrograde right now – on top of everything else, we don't need things to be that "interesting!!"

Mercury (the planet) is currently very strongly placed in its own sign of Gemini and is the Final Dispositor of the chart. That means either directly or indirectly, Mercury rules every other planet in the chart, which gives it a lot of power and influence. So whatever is happening to Mercury in the chart will tend to have ripple effects throughout the effects of this New Moon cycle.

T-square aspect figure

Mercury is at the apex of a T-square (mostly in Mutable signs), composed of Mercury in Gemini, square to Mars in Virgo which is in turn opposite to Chiron in Pisces and Neptune in Aquarius. Your mind could seem irritable, anxious or restless right now. You might find yourself debating whether you're just angry and frustrated about a personal here-and-now situation or whether you're overwhelmed by huge problems far greater than yourself over which you have little control.

It's no debate really – the answer is "all of the above." There's no shortage of craziness and tension in the world right now. The Deep Horizon oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, the G8/G20 Summit conferences here in Toronto Canada this month – take your pick. Plus the intense controversy that gravitates toward these issues. This T-square acts like a lightning rod for tension and stress like this.

Thankfully, these aspects are all separating, which means they've past exact (Jun.04-11; all closest on Jun.10) but still close enough to be in effect. So, we're all probably still feeling the residual stress, frustration, longing, motivation and drive from the week or so prior to the New Moon, which is likely to influence our perceptions and choices now and as the lunar cycle unfolds.

Aspects to the New Moon in Gemini

The New Moon itself (the Sun-Moon conjunction) is almost unaspected, as far as major aspects go. The Sun-Moon conjoined twins have only rather wide aspects to a few planets. What strengthens these aspects is that they are applying (they are approaching exact and therefore building in their interactive energy). The Sun-Moon pair is square to Saturn in Virgo (6:34 orb), which suggests that the organization of specific or practical facts (rather than speculation with intuitive ideas) could become necessary but not all that easy to achieve.

The trine aspect to Neptune in Aquarius (7:16 orb) is especially interesting because Neptune is currently the only planet in a Fixed sign. Slippery Neptune is not exactly the first planet I think of when I think of Fixed energy! Its version of being Fixed probably looks more like inertia than stability. So Neptune wants you to go with the flow, but choose your flowing river wisely because once you're in the grip of its current, you might be stuck there for quite a while. However, if the current is heading in the right direction for you, Neptune can provide a relaxing, peaceful, creative and inspiring ride.

The New Moon is also in a very wide square aspect to Uranus and Jupiter (8:58 and 9:23 orbs, respectively). In fact, the orbs are so wide that they're actually closer to a bi-novile aspect (80°; at 1:01 and 0:35 separating orbs, respectively). The novile family of aspects is very trippy stuff! David Hamblin (Harmonic Charts) describes it as having a Neptune-like quality, being about peace and happiness, enlightenment and acceptance, artistry and psychic receptivity. So again, Neptune's influence seeps back into the picture.

Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct at zero degrees of Aries (exact on Jun.08). This is an extremely powerful conjoined energy to have at the New Moon. Zero Aries is the initiation point of the zodiac – the Big Bang of new zodiacal energy that expands, forms, moves and evolves. So with Jupiter and Uranus in bi-novile aspect to the New Moon, we could become a lot more receptive and sensitive to that explosion of new energy than we realize (or want to be). The New Moon's Gemini influence will probably try to figure it out, analyze it, make fun of it, and then trade notes about it with all the neighbours, so get your Facebook and Twitter fingers limbered up!

Cardinal Cross aspect pattern

The Jupiter-Uranus conjunction is also opposite Saturn right now and square to Pluto – the infamous Cardinal Cross! In this case, the "Cross" is a T-square or what some call a T-cross. It becomes a Grand Cross at the upcoming Full Moon in Capricorn, which is also a Lunar Eclipse and is also the fruition of this New Moon. Although the Sun-Moon conjunction now forms a wide T-square, they're still much too far away from opposing Pluto to call it a Grand Cross just yet, though. (Stay tuned for more about this in the next update!)

In a nutshell, this aspect figure brings a colossal transformation that comes out of a struggle between the "old order" and the "new order." Jupiter-Uranus bring out truth, information, perspective or awareness that had previously been hidden, obscured or unknown, while Saturn in opposition is determined to keep things ordered, stable and correct. Pluto in the middle is there to guide us through the process of change, although that doesn't mean it's likely to be easy, smooth or pleasant.

Yod aspect pattern to Neptune-Chiron

On top of everything else, we also have a very tight Yod aspect figure. Venus is sextile (60°) to Saturn, and both are quincunx (150°) to the Neptune-Chiron conjunction at the apex. You might feel the need to strive toward healing and resolution through high ideals and trust in the Universe. However, it is more likely through focusing on the practical application and details that you will find that sublime satisfaction. This aspect pattern contains some of the most precise aspects in the New Moon chart, so its energy is likely to persist even through the confusion of everything else going on.

Venus later becomes the apex of another Yod, and there's more about both Yods below. In fact, there are a profusion of quincunx aspects in the New Moon chart. (6 in all!) A quincunx (150° – sometimes called an inconjunct) is about paradox, irritation and the need for adjustment. Its energy requires a philosophical attitude because the planetary energies that are joined by this aspect don't connect directly to each other. It's like the planets are in each other's blind spot, yet they are required to collaborate somehow.

With so much of this energy active at the New Moon, it shows that this lunar cycle will demand a lot from us in thinking outside the box and being able to understand the unfolding events from a broader perspective. The more explicit, direct and concise you try to be, the more the path of resolution is likely to elude you. So loosen up your mind and give the complexity some room to breathe, whether that is a situation, a problem, your feelings or your perceptions.

There's so much going on right now that it can be a bit overwhelming – in excitement, stress, confusion, growth, evolution, or all of these! A personal reading helps you find your way through the chaos, confusion and juggling of events and priorities. I am available for personal readings to lay out and clarify the roadmap of the territory that lies ahead and how to figure out your next step. Contact me for more information!

Jun.12-15 – Yod aspect pattern to Neptune-Chiron

Yod aspect pattern to Neptune-Chiron

We are all striving toward a new grand vision of idealism, spirituality and belief in a greater purpose. However, it important to "steer" your journey with one hand firmly on responsible practicality and the other on maintaining a simple connection between yourself and others in the here-and-now. How do you do that? Just take the next small step that makes sense. Don't look for it way "out there," but ask yourself what is the one simple thing you can do right now – then take that step in the spirit of your greater vision. It's a bit like trying to focus on something up close and something far away at the same time, but the up-close thing (what you can do in the here-and-now) is the more important when it comes to deciding how to proceed. Keep your far-off goal in the background and the greater journey will take care of itself.

This is one of two Yod aspect patterns that come together in mid-June. Neptune in Aquarius and Chiron in Pisces are conjunct (0°) at the apex. Both of them are quincunx (150°) Saturn in Virgo and Venus in Cancer, which are themselves in a sextile aspect (60°). They are closest from Jun.12-15, although they're within orb for a couple of days before and after those dates.

What's also interesting about this configuration is that in the middle of this Yod figure, Venus changes signs from Cancer to Leo (Jun.14). It suggests that your connection and caring toward others (that is part of this Yod's energy) needs to evolve into self-expression and self-love, but needs to be grounded within healing and humility and not centered in the ego.

Jun.12 – Venus sextile Saturn (27:58 of Cancer/Virgo) (Jun.13 in AU)

It is possible to find some stability in your relationships and finances under this transit, especially if you are willing to negotiate fairly and realistically. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and budgeting, and to invest in hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and your interaction with others. Commitment and structure may be easier to approach and achieve than if you take risks now. Your self-worth can benefit from this transit because you may be less inclined to give in to mood swings. On the other hand, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Jun.14 – Venus enters Leo (until Jul.10)

This can be a very creative time, as Venus' love of beauty combines with Leo's creative flair for the dramatic. Find ways to feel good by making your surroundings and yourself beautiful and reflective of your inner spirit! High fashion and vogue style are "in," and crudeness and ordinariness are out...unless you want to turn them into a fashion statement. ;-) However, it's probably wise not to become so identified with the outer appearance of yourself or others that you lose sight of the person, situation or context that it's all happening in. The aim is to pamper yourself with pleasures that enhance your quality of life, without inflating your ego with synthetic self-esteem and glamour without substance. Relationships, interaction, finances, values and resources all need to include ways to express your identity, valour and "heart." Some light-hearted fun and play can be a good place to start.

Jun.14 – Venus trine Uranus (00:24 of Leo/Aries) (Jun.15 in AU)

Spontaneity and liberation burst into your relationships, finances, resources and pleasures. You might feel compelled to try something completely different that shakes up the "same-old-same-old" routines you're used to. The upside is that you have the opportunity to break free of some old habits and breathe some fresh air into your life. But the downside could come in the form of impulse spending beyond your budget, or recklessness in your interactions and relationships. Strive to break free of what holds you back from being your true self, without destroying the structure of order in your life.

Jun.15-17 – Yod aspect figure to Venus

For the last few days (see Jun.12-15), you've been challenged to take small steps by putting your emphasis on interpersonal connection and careful attention to here-and-now details, in order to move toward a new vision of ideals and a connection to a higher purpose in your life. This energy shifted from a caring connection with others to a creative connection based on self-expression.

Yod aspect pattern to Venus

Now, the focus is flipped the other way. Instead of Venus being one of the driving forces, she is now the aim or destination or target. The ultimate direction is toward creative self-expression and self-love (Venus in Leo), but this needs to be "driven" from an emphasis on the healing power of transformation (Neptune and Chiron sextile Pluto). In other words, it is not enough to love yourself (although this is an essential ingredient for anything else you strive to do). It is not enough to express yourself creatively, as an end in itself. It is not enough to project self-confidence or take regal command of your life.

This Yod wants to inspire you to go further than the benefits to yourself or even the here-and-now results. Start with your vision of the healing transformation that you want to result from whatever you're involved in. What would that look like? What would it feel like to achieve that? Create this greater vision in your mind's eye, feel it in your body and hear its sweet music. Only then: put paintbrush to canvas or pen to paper or needle to fabric or hand to mouse. This could be trickier than it sounds, but your best results will come from being able to focus on both the big and little pictures at the same time.

This is the second Yod aspect pattern to form in mid-June, the first being Jun.12-15. Venus is the common thread that runs through both patterns. In this case, Venus in Leo is at the apex, bridging the gap through a quincunx aspect (150°) to Pluto in Capricorn and Chiron in Pisces.

Jun.15 – Venus trine Jupiter (01:08 of Leo/Aries)

Your luck and opportunity to attract money, love, resources and self-esteem are high right now. The flow of attraction (whether that is magnetizing people, things or opportunities) is riding a strong current right now. You could find it easier than usual to get the resources and abundance for whatever you need right now. On the other hand, "your eyes may be bigger than your stomach" (as mother used to say), meaning your desire may magnify your sense of need beyond what is realistic or wise. You may be tempted to spend, flirt or bluff your way through situations, preferring to ignore or avoid hardship, boundaries or drudgery. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but be careful you don't get your hopes up so high that you set yourself up for disappointment or make promises you can't keep. It's probably wise to balance this easy flowing energy with some discretion and good judgement.

Jun.15 – Mars trine Pluto (04:22 of Virgo/Capricorn)

You may feel a strong urge to embrace and engage power, assert your desires and act on deep impulses. Your sexual energy could also be very high now (use it wisely). You might feel like nothing can stop you or hold you back. In fact, the ability to create change and take action is especially strong right now. If you have been preparing to put plans into action, this can be a powerful time to do so. But also be aware that too much of a good thing can sometimes backfire – it is possible to overstep your bounds or come on a bit too strong, with this energy. Suppressed anger, frustration or an urge to "vanquish the enemy" may be expressed more forcefully than you intend. It will help to center yourself and focus on acknowledging your emotions, impulses and power – then use your good judgment when deciding whether or how to act on them.

Jun.17-28 – Cardinal Grand Cross aspect pattern

Cardinal Cross at the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn on June 26 2010

Here comes the big Cardinal Cross that you've been reading and hearing about! This is the biggest astrological show in town in 2010. Jupiter conjunct Uranus explodes with new beginnings, new truth, new perspectives; new crises but out of them, new opportunities and possibilities. Saturn opposing them is there to represent the sober second thoughts that need to happen before all that Jupiter-Uranus impulse gets completely out of hand. Pluto in Capricorn symbolizes both the old ways that try desperately to hold onto power and resist change, as well as the unavoidable need for transformation to create change within the established Powers That Be.

At the time of the upcoming Lunar Eclipse (Jun.26), all four Cardinal signs are populated by planets and/or the Lights. In Capricorn we currently have Pluto, and by the time Jun.26 rolls around it will be tightly conjunct the eclipsed Moon. In Aries, we have Jupiter and Uranus, still tightly conjunct. Across the zodiac is Saturn, still in the final degrees of Virgo and about to return to Libra on Jul.21. The Sun is still in the late degrees of Gemini, but close enough to square Saturn and Jupiter-Uranus, and just entering the orb to oppose Pluto. And Mercury joins the sun on Jun.23, exactly conjoining the Sun just as they are passing out of orb to oppose Pluto.

The Grand Cross aspect pattern, itself, hangs together for around 11 days. Its powerful energy will be grounded like a lightning rod at the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn (Jun.26), and therefore its effects will be felt for much longer than those few days. The slower planets in this dance, occasionally joined by the faster moving planets, will continue as a Cardinal T-square until October. So, although we have seen this figure briefly in the last several months, this is really the start of a 4-month period of continued peak, intense influence.

The Sun-Mercury combination fills in the fourth leg of the Grand Cross, and acts as a trigger that brings all that larger-than-life energy into a more personalized dimension. In other words, you're likely to feel this energy on a more personal level while the Sun and Mercury form the Grand Cross. On the other hand, because of the Lunar Eclipse, your personalized experience of the trans-personal energy actually opens up a greater process that will unfold over the coming weeks or months.

On another level, the Sun and Mercury may indicate that you could be challenged to communicate a sense of leadership, confidence and caring in response to the events and conditions that unfold during this time. This is likely to require effort, focus and a commitment to take action. Forward thinking and mapping out a solid plan for success are among your best assets now. You will need to put these together with the materials, experience, learning and assets gathered from the past. Be alert for unexpected opportunities and inspiration that come disguised as problems and crises.

Over the next couple of weeks, you'll see the Sun and Mercury move through the individual aspects to the other planets in this aspect figure: square Saturn, square Uranus, square Jupiter and opposite Pluto. Be alert to the ways that these individual aspects form a greater picture of transformation, change, opportunity and growth.

There's also the trine to Neptune and Chiron, which although not part of the Grand Cross itself, will provide an extra dimension to this complex energy. There's hope for healing and redemption that can be found in the midst of all this stress and striving.

Jun.19 – Sun square Saturn (28:09 of Gemini/Virgo)

It is necessary for you to come to grips with limitations, boundaries or expectations. If you have been avoiding some task or obligation, this transit might bring consequences from that avoidance or a warning of consequences to come. You might also encounter a situation that requires you to accept unwanted responsibility or restricts your freedom in some way. You might be faced with some part of your life being pruned back, either to rein in something that is out of control or to make room for new growth. This is likely to be more or less stressful depending on how comfortable you are dealing with responsibility, authority, limits and hard work. If you have a hard time with authority issues, you might find yourself in conflict with someone in authority under this transit – perhaps in part because your buttons are getting pushed. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you are challenged to take action or make a decision that involves taking on more responsibility. It is also a time when you may have to find better ways to deal with personal boundaries – accepting others' or learning to assert your own. You're bumping up against reality, so try to work constructively with it, not hurl yourself against it.

Jun.19 – Sun trine Neptune (28:36 of Gemini/Aquarius) (Jun.20 in UK, AU)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Cancer! When the Sun enters Cancer, it also marks the Summer Solstice (in North America, the UK, Europe and other places in the northern hemisphere); or the Winter Solstice (in Australia, most of South America and other places in the southern hemisphere). This is the time when we all get to cultivate and nurture the Cancer side of our nature. This includes feelings, needs and nurturing instincts, as well as your connection to home and family, and your most primal sense of belonging. To explore this area of your life, think about your family – are you closely connected to your family-of-origin (the one you grew up with), or do you also have a "chosen family" in adulthood? Who is part of your support system (the people you know you can turn to when you need them)? What people, groups, places or experiences satisfy your need for belonging, which everyone has inside them? Cancer is about our distant past (childhood, ancestry, memories) that influences our current behaviour, motives and methods of getting our emotional needs met. Take this time to find new ways to nurture yourself, to share that nurturing with others, and to ensure that you don't give to others at the expense of not getting what you need.

Jun.21 – Sun square Uranus (00:30 of Cancer/Aries) (Jun.22 in UK, AU)

Your world may experience a bit of a shake-up right now, as the Universe decides it's time to make things "interesting." This is a wake-up call, designed to loosen you up from the ways you have become too habitual, stuck or inhibited. The "radical rascal" in you may be itching to come out and stir up trouble, which on one hand might be necessary but also very disruptive and possibly even destructive. Be alert to new insights and opportunities disguised as accidents or crises. Your usual sense of self and purpose may become somewhat unsettled right now, but a space is likely being cleared to make room for new growth and possibilities. If you're looking to break old habits or break free of old restrictions, this may be the time – but it could create a mess that you'll have to clean up later. Resist the urge to rebel just for the sake of doing something different, and aim instead to break free of old forms of self-expression and ideals that don’t work for you anymore. Expect the unexpected and then surf the shock-wave.

Jun.22 – Sun trine Chiron (00:49 of Cancer/Pisces)

This is a time when you may find that your recent efforts to mend and heal the chronic struggles in your life start to come together. You likely have the confidence now to try new solutions, or at least to approach problems from a different angle that sheds new light on the situation. Some of this progress may come from daring to walk your own path, or from finding the courage to face the hidden shadow of your worries and weaknesses (the hidden benefit that those worries give you). There may be a variety of different struggles and wounds in your life that could benefit from this kind of healing, although it can be tempting to let this transit pass by without taking advantage of it. Strive to reach a midpoint between merely dipping your toe in troubled waters and thinking that is enough, versus jumping in the deep end and marinating in it.

Jun.23 – Sun square Jupiter (01:58 of Cancer/Aries)

You may be inspired to expand far beyond your usual boundaries during this time, although this may or may not work in the way you hope it will. It can be a time of challenge, when you decide that now is the time to move beyond your current horizons and make the ultimate push for something you believe will bring you happiness, fulfilment and prosperity. How successful you are will probably depend on how prepared you are for what comes next. Your judgment and your ability to see things objectively and realistically can be a little "off" during this transit, since your hopes and ideals might distort what is actually possible. It can be easy to overestimate the envisioned results, or you might underestimate the amount of work necessary to sustain your dream and prevent it from being just a flash in the pan. Try to avoid being overconfident and making promises you can't keep (including to yourself).

Jun.24 – Mercury square Saturn (28:21 of Gemini/Virgo) (Jun.25 in AU)

Your thoughts, ideas and communication need to become structured, rational and discreet, although this may not be easy to achieve. You may have to work extra hard to get your point across now, since others might be resistant to your ideas or may not be familiar with the basic concepts. It is a time to be clear, objective and down-to-earth in your communication and thinking, but equally important to do this without going overboard and becoming rigid, autocratic or over-cautious. If you find yourself stuck in a "glass half empty" frame of mind, you might be sagging under the weight of melancholy ...Or, it might mean you are coming to terms with some hard realities and decisions and feeling the gravity of the implications. But also check to be sure you're not taking yourself and your situation too seriously. By applying your best efforts, this can be a very productive time, especially with anything involving communication, writing, organising or logic.

Jun.24 – Mercury trine Neptune (28:33 of Gemini/Aquarius) (Jun.25 in AU)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

Jun.25 – Mercury enters Cancer (until Jul.09)

Intuition, sensitive perception, and communication of feelings flow more easily during this transit. Your empathy may be deepened now, as you can be more able to imagine and pick up on what other people feel and need. Because of this, you may also find that it's easier to say difficult things in a sensitive, caring way. However, your open connection to others might also increase the risk of communicating in a hurtful or callous way, if you are not used to treading gently. Your creative imagination is also more accessible now. To take advantage of this, try doing some journal writing, expand your emotional awareness, have some creative fun, or think of ways to make your environment more homey and comfortable.

Jun.25 – Mercury square Uranus (00:33 of Cancer/Aries) (Jun.26 in AU)

Flashes of insight can show you new clarity but you might not like the answers you get, since they could disturb your logical perception of what's what. You might get some news or learn come information that shakes you up in some way. This isn't necessarily bad, since this may be necessary to open your mind to something you've been resisting. There's a Higher Truth here that wants to be told (by you or to you), but the way it's phrased can make a big difference in the reaction. There is a risk of "shooting off your mouth before your brains are loaded," as the saying goes, and impulsive or reckless communication and ideas could create more problems than they solve. It will probably help to listen inside yourself first to discover what you really need to say, and then figure out how to say it in a way that doesn't cause unnecessary damage. Strive to shine a light of truth without blinding anyone with it.

Jun.25 – Sun opposite Pluto (04:06 of Cancer/Capricorn) (Jun.26 in AU)

Who owns the power? This is a time when you may be called upon to stand up to a situation or person who pressures you to dance to their tune instead of your own. This is a chance to assert and empower yourself in new ways, putting into practice the inner strength you've developed in the last 6 months. The trick is to face the situation or person while rooted in inner honesty and authenticity, rather than trying to annihilate the enemy using overkill. Strive to negotiate (or struggle) together using just enough force to establish a workable balance of power, without either of you being nuked in the process. Also, be open to the possibility that your "opponent" might be holding up a mirror, which is showing you something about yourself that you may not want to acknowledge. That doesn't necessarily make your opponent right and you wrong, but there might be something for you to learn from the situation. If you are in a situation that doesn't involve an "opponent" as such, there may still be an aspect of your environment that is holding up a difficult mirror, requiring you to find a more centred and authentic point of inner power. It is by finding new balance within this kind of dynamic, whatever the circumstances, that transformation can be found.

Jun.25 – Mercury trine Chiron (00:45 of Cancer/Pisces) (Jun.26 in AU)

Your mental focus and communication now get an injection of healing energy. Cynicism and depression may soften now, as you become more receptive to a more optimistic viewpoint. If you have been caught up in escapism or "stinkin' thinkin'" (thinking you're more in control of your impulses than you really are), you may now find some relief and healing. Mental argument and critical "self-talk" can now find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings some peace of mind. You have increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems. Compassion and empathy may be more accessible because you can identify your own experiences with what you see in others. You might also find someone who can give you good advice or support about your own problems – possibly a teacher or mentor – or you could become this to someone else.

Jun.26 – Mercury square Jupiter (02:14 of Cancer/Aries)

You may be seeing the weak links in your knowledge, understanding or beliefs right now. Your ideas and words might seem to fall short of what your mind envisions, or you might be unable to convince others of your point of view. As a result, it can be tempting to over-compensate with more self-confidence, faith or optimism than you actually have. Or, you might give out "too much information" by over-explaining or through nervous rambling. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else who does this and perhaps have a blaming or judgmental reaction to them. This is an opportunity to learn something about how you might jump to conclusions or blame, possibly triggered by a situation that challenges your beliefs, opinions or perspective. To learn more about this part of yourself, try taking some time to think about what is really bothering you or what you really need to say in that situation. There may be a higher truth to be found if you open your mind to something you're reluctant to acknowledge, rather than looking for a "final truth" around which to close it.

Sabian Symbol Capricorn 5: Indians rowing a canoe and dancing a war dance.

Sabian Symbol for the
Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn

Capricorn 5

Indians rowing a canoe and dancing a war dance.

This Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") refers to aboriginal people, commonly called Indians. A canoe is an lightweight boat made of natural materials. It might be made from a tree trunk (e.g. dugout canoe) or birch bark (used traditionally by North American Indians).

Dane Rudhyar has some fascinating comments about this symbol. In short, he talks about how a leader may "arouse the war spirit...in order to more firmly establish his authority." By responding to this directive, the group "affirms its solidarity and unit of purpose." (An Astrological Mandala)

Here in Toronto, Canada, we have the G20 World Summit taking place on the day of the lunar eclipse. An impressive police force has been mobilized to protect the world leaders, while large groups of protesters march the streets. Each group seems determined to demonstrate and assert its own solidarity and purpose. The result is intense, dramatic, frightening and exciting!

In your own life, where do you feel drawn to show solidarity, perhaps against a common enemy? Or, internally, are there parts of you that are gathering together to charge toward a goal or ambition that you want to conquer?

Is there something in your life or in yourself that you are fighting against? What is the purpose or principle around which you are summoning yourself to this challenge? And is it a worthy one?

Fasten your seatbelts! We're heading into one powerful Lunar Eclipse!

This eclipse is like a well-rounded movie that has something for everyone. As you "watch" the following trailer, you can decide which part you are playing – or would rather play.

There's the action scene where the hero and heroine (Jupiter and Uranus in Aries) have the audacity to go charging off into the wilderness on a whim. Everyone thinks they're flaky, cheeky, reckless or just plain crazy, but the truth is they're on a sacred mission to slash a new path through the virgin landscape on their way to finding the Holy Grail.

There's also the evil villain who has captured the damsel in distress (Pluto and the Moon in Capricorn). The villain is holding her inside a deep underground cave. Everyone thinks he's violating her, abusing her or forcing her to watch 1950s documentaries about the industrialization of seaside and rural areas. Secretly, she's actually the one who has charmed the villain with cookies and cuddling. As the movie unfolds, they gradually transform into King Kong and Fay Wray who start their own company selling alternative energy.

Cardinal Cross at the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn

The narrator (Saturn in Virgo) describes the antics of the others in great gory detail. Amid the conspiracies, rebellions and manipulative choreography, our narrator is determined to keep the movie on track—that is, on the track he believes is the best one. Recognizing his opportunity to shape the plot of the movie, he polishes the best parts to perfection and reorganizes the scenes, leaving irrelevant clips on the cutting room floor. While recording the voiceover that precisely describes the story line and the subtle twist and turns in the plot, he locks the door to keep out the actors' union and producers who are complaining that he's being too controlling.

And finally there's the audience, consisting of a mother and her young child (Sun and Mercury in Cancer). The mother wants to shield her child from the sex, violence and mature theme content, but at the same time realizes that the child could learn something important and valuable from the experience. So she alternatively covers and uncovers the child's eyes.

The child, however, is very curious about what's happening on the screen (especially the parts that get covered up). Being a bit of a misbehaving brat, the child squirms and finds ingenious ways to peek through Mom's fingers – sure enough, becoming shocked, amazed, frightened and overwhelmed by the scenes. Although some innocence has been lost, the experience becomes an important turning point in the child's developmental process and initiates the growth of a more mature, realistic and grounded worldview.

The End.

This is the infamous Cardinal Cross! Our 4 scenarios represent the 4 corners of the Grand Cross. Each corner has its own agenda, its own story and its own role to play in the unfolding drama. Ultimately, the whole of the experience will alter, shift and transform everyone involved, and will also take the entire project in a new direction.

In the end, you are all four corners. Some of the scenarios might be played out externally – that is, in the world around you, through other people or current events or outside situations – but each of these factors has a corresponding place inside you.

You are a hero or heroine on a sacred mission to find truth and break through obstacles in your way. (Jupiter and Uranus)

You are a villain trying to keep something beautiful all to yourself, and you are the vulnerable maiden, although not without power and persuasion. (Pluto and Moon)

You are the teller and creator of your own story, capable of making that story better or worse by how you communicate it, frame it and craft the details. (Saturn)

You are your own parent, trying valiantly to protect yourself by focusing on the best parts, even if it means pretending things aren't as bad as they really are. (Sun)

And you are the Inner Child whose life force and curiosity drive you to encounter a sometimes dangerous world, leaving you feeling overwhelmed, but whose strength and growth also depend on pushing past the boundaries of self-protection. (Mercury)

Trying to juggle all of these personas and keep them in balance is no trivial performance!

Cardinal Cross at the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn

Now available:

Have you been feeling like you're pushing a rock uphill lately? The Cardinal Cross aspect pattern is one reason why! Jupiter conjunct Uranus, opposite Saturn, T-squared by Pluto. Chaotic, inspiring, strenuous, transforming – one thing it's not is boring!

This lunar eclipse will remain in its effects for several weeks to several months, and has been with you already for a few weeks. As you're working through this potent energy, think about what you can do with all those different personalities inside you. As your own cast of characters, you are the producer and director of your own drama. You can't always control what other actors on the stage do (what other people do), but you can decide what you will do and how you will respond.

That said, it's also important to remember that you are human and can make mistakes, get confused, choose unwisely and fall short of perfection because you're still learning. In other words, don't fall into the Capricorn trap of expecting that all that power and potential will make you into a robot that you merely have to program. Don't sell your own humanness short.

If you get lost in this Hall of Mirrors, or if you get stuck worrying about whether you're "doing it right," or if you start to find it easier to beat yourself up and can't find your compassionate Inner Parent, or if you get overly distracted because staying in the moment feels too overwhelming—contact me for a reading. These are "interesting" but also strenuous times, and a little support and insight can help bring out the best strength in you.

Jun.27 – Mercury opposite Pluto (04:04 of Cancer/Capricorn)

This transit brings powerful words and ideas! They require you to strike a balance between personal perceptions and trans-personal implications. Your communication can be more penetrating, forceful or persistent than usual now, and a little will go a long way, so use this ability sparingly and carefully. In the same way, the words and perceptions of others may have a deeper and stronger impact on you than they normally do. This could be a mixed blessing – you may discover some profound insight and psychological truth in what others say to you, but you might also be receiving their unconscious projections too (meaning their perceptions and feedback might say more about them than about you). Deep self-honesty can help you decide what is true and what is being distorted. Avoid reacting on "automatic pilot" and give yourself some mental and psychological breathing room to avoid becoming overwhelmed.

Jun.28 – Sun conjunct Mercury (06:42 of Cancer)

During this transit, your sense of self and purpose can become merged with what you think, perceive and say. On one hand, this can make for an easy flow of ideas and communication from inside your brain to the external world. It can also increase your perceptions and observations of the world, as you file it all away in your internal database. On the other hand, you may find yourself a bit tongue-tied, as it could be hard to separate your sense of self from your perceptions and ideas enough to find the words to adequately express them. In that case, just observe and go with the flow; the words will come later. It can also be a time when it's not easy to be objective, especially about yourself and how you bring yourself to the world around you. It's like your Being automatically expresses and sets into motion the things you think, perceive and want to say. This can help you to feel like your sense of self is shining effortlessly, but if your thoughts and perceptions are in conflict with other parts of you (e.g., emotions, needs, objectivity) then it might become a time when you act a little too quickly with blinders on. Strive for balance and self-honesty before you act.

Jun.30 – Mercury conjunct South Lunar Node (11:56 of Cancer) Jul.01 in AU

It's time to let go of old perceptions and ideas that are now just getting in the way of your ability to see things clearly. This might not be an easy task, because your new point of view might show you something you don't really want to see. It might mean you need to change your mind about something or someone. However, by clearing away the blocks to greater awareness, you can start to reshape the way you see yourself or others or life in general. To do this, you might need to release, share and communicate your observations of the last 6 months or so. Take advantage of this time of transition by doing some writing, or perhaps comparing notes with someone about things you've been mulling over.

Jul.01 – Mercury sextile Mars (13:13 of Cancer/Virgo)

There is a potential now to find the courage to speak your mind and say what needs to be said, if you focus consciously on doing so. In fact, your ideas and words may come so quickly and easily that it's hard to stop them from tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to evaluate the best way to say them. Communication is probably easiest and most effective when it's direct, concise and quick, although it might also be a bit blunt or pointed. If you need to confront someone about a difficult situation, this transit can provide courage and clear words to help you do that – although perhaps a bit too forceful when a more delicate, sensitive touch is called for. It is a time when you might find the nerve to take risks, or to defend yourself if the need arises (especially verbally). This is a good transit for creative problem solving and trying on decisions to see if they fit.

Jul.03 – Sun conjunct South Lunar Node (11:56 of Cancer) Jul.04 in UK, AU

This transit involves a creative release or a letting-go of a piece of your self-image that you don't need anymore. However, this letting go can often be difficult, especially if what you have invested a lot of your sense of self in whatever you're letting go. It might feel like circumstances are wrenching it away, or you could feel quite relieved to let go of this old baggage. Letting go can free up a lot of creative energy, life force and joie de vivre, which can then be rechanneled into other forms of self-expression. Follow your heart! It is time to begin letting go of something in yourself that no longer serves you well. This could be a negative belief about yourself, or perhaps dropping an inhibition that has eroded your self-confidence. This transit only happens close to the eclipses, so its energy is likely to come out around the timing of those events more noticeably.

Jul.05 – Uranus stationary Retrograde (14:44 Pisces) Jul.06 in AU ("What's a station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?Read articles on retrogrades and stations.)

Uranus now appears to go backwards (retrograde) against the backdrop of the stars. This is often a turning point in situations involving issues of spontaneity, freedom, breaking free of old patterns, rebellion and expressing your personal uniqueness. It could feel a bit chaotic or erratic—or perhaps just spontaneous and exciting—for up to a week before and after this date. However, Uranus' ultimate agenda is to clear the way for your true spirit to manifest in your life. You may experience unexpected changes, flashes of insight, or disruption of established situations that aren't working well (which might include computers, Internet, mass media, groups, friends or future plans). This can be the awakening of a new perspective, to be brought into a clearer focus through open-mindedness and being willing to try new things. If you are going through major transits from Uranus to your natal chart, you are more likely to feel the energy of this station. Jul.08 – Venus opposite Neptune (28:19 of Leo/Aquarius) Jul.09 in UK, AU

Romance, idealism, fantasy and imagination are blossoming into a bright aura right now, which is likely to influence your relationships, interactions, finances and values – for better or for worse! Compassion, caring and selfless giving can be good ideals to aim for, as long as you remember that ideals tend to lose some of their shiny glow when they're translated into hard reality. If you forget this, the end result may be disappointing or disillusioning. Disappointment may also indicate that there have been hidden hopes or high expectations that no one can really live up to. Aim to balance your innocence and longing with the judgement of your older, wiser, mature self; and do a reality check with a trusted friend or adviser if in doubt. That said, this can also be a very creative and inspiring time – just remember to keep one foot on the ground.

Jul.09 – Mercury sextile Saturn (29:07 of Cancer/Virgo)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and decisions now. It's a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your ambitions. Or, you may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals, by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the past several months. This will probably require a bit of effort on your part to make it happen, but the opportunity is there if you choose to take it. This transit can bring mental stability and the ability to apply your mental focus in a practical and grounded way. It may be easier to see things realistically and objectively. Creative energy can become productive and rewarding, if you use it methodically or logically.

Jul.09 – Mercury enters Leo (until Jul.27) Jul.10 in AU

While Mercury struts through Leo, your creativity and self-expression are flying high! Your communication strives to express more than just facts or information – it wants to convey the dramatic energy that tells a story in larger-than-life proportions! How you perceive and experience life right now can be vivid, dramatic and fun, as you pick up more easily on the expressive and "feel-good" elements of what's happening around you. You may become very creative, inspired and motivated during this time. The downside is that it may also easier to indulge in a mindset that is self-serving, egotistical or overconfident. Your motives are likely to be noble, heroic and full of good intentions, but you could also become so in love with your vision of what's possible that you miss valid criticism or drawbacks. This is a time to enjoy the playful delights of sports, games, humor, fun and children.

Jul.09 – Mercury trine Uranus (00:35 of Leo/Aries) Jul.10 in UK, AU

Unusual ideas, flashes of insight and seeing unexpected possibilities are all part of this transit. You may find it easier to be open-minded right now, especially about insights that have eluded you. Your ability to see beyond your usual horizon of perception can bring visionary brainwaves, as well as a fun sense of humour. You might be inspired to experiment with something new or do something out of character. You might have an impulse to break free of old habits or constraints. This can be a very liberating transit that opens your mind to new possibilities and ideas. However, be careful that you don't become so liberated and spontaneous that you become erratic, hyper or reckless. Words may come tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to consider their wisdom, or you might find yourself talking non-stop and interrupting, creating a bit of awkwardness in those around you. On the other hand, you might also find the clarity and vision that gives you the words to speak your truth with new conviction. It's a great time to do some writing or other form of self-expression, especially if it's spontaneous or involving technology.

Jul.10 – Venus enters Virgo (until Aug.06)

Under this transit, it is possible to fall in love with purity, precision and analysis. It is a time to invest in health, efficiency, and your contribution to the world around you. The beauty is in the details, as you embrace a labour of love in your life. Just don't get so enamoured with pristine splendour that you get lost in perfectionism and unable to accept the natural imperfection that exists in all life and humanity. Each of us is the Universe's perfect child, but we are also in a state of becoming and growing and are therefore likely to make human mistakes. Remember that we're here for the journey, as much as the destination. This part of the journey takes us into service and devotion, whether that is focused on another person or on ourselves.

Jul.10 – Venus opposite Chiron (00:21 of Virgo/Pisces) Jul.11 in AU

You may be extra sensitive to other people's suffering, struggles or dilemmas under this transit. Your own ongoing issues in relationships or finances may undergo a kind of "healing crisis" in which you endure increased problems and must use extra tolerance, compromise or negotiation to keep things from collapsing into a worse state. At the same time, you may be able to reach a new level of acceptance and peace – not necessarily by solving the problems, but by letting go of the struggles that are not as important as you thought and by making the best of the ones that are left. Other people or outside circumstances may give you a push in this direction, which might feel at first like old wounds are being opened up. But this is an opportunity to find new ways to bring healing and balance to old problems, especially using tolerance, compromise and acceptance.

Jul.11 – Sun sextile Mars (18:46 of Cancer/Virgo)

You have power, energy, motivation and enthusiasm to fuel your ambitions now! The catch is you will need to reach for it; it won't simply "come to you." Reach into your past experience and reach forward toward your vision of what you want. This will help to guide your actions and focus your assertive energy in the direction you want to go. This is a good time to make progress toward a goal. Or, you might want to take steps to leave behind inhibitions that have held you back. This transit can also make you more apt to take risks and find the courage to do things you might not otherwise do. Your tolerance for obstacles may be shortened, and making it easy to assume the only way through them is by using direct force. This may or may not be wise, depending on how extreme you want to take it, so use your good judgment and don't throw away your diplomacy.

Jul.11 – Mercury trine Jupiter (03:09 of Leo/Aries)

This transit can make you quite talkative and flooded with ideas, along with those around you. Your stream of consciousness can flow abundantly with optimism and visionary possibilities. Write down your best ideas for later development, since you may be having too much fun now playing with ideas to want to stop and make them manifest just yet. Your outlook is usually optimistic and open-minded under this transit, although it might simply neutralize an already pessimistic frame of mind. You are likely to be more open to spiritual or philosophical perspectives, being more able to see yourself as part of something greater than yourself. You might even find that luck comes your way because you are more receptive to opportunities and possibilities.
