Welcome to the shadow...

Not the retrograde shadow (although Venus is still retrograde), but the psychological shadow. This is Carl Jung's term for where we hide from ourselves (and hopefully from others) the qualities about ourselves that we don't want to acknowledge (or don't know how to).

A 1930s American radio program gripped audiences with its distinctive, chilling laugh and famous words: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows..."

The New Moon in Scorpio is an invitation to peer into your shadow and face whatever you find there. Most of us would rather do just about anything else, though! The shadow is like a dark cave inside us. We might see nebulous movements in the dark corners and we may hear what sounds like the howling of a banshee from within. What sane person would voluntarily walk into that cave?? Would a rational person really go into that darkness and say, "Come out, come out, wherever you are... Can we talk?"

And yet, Scorpio is precisely about the journey that we all take at some point in our lives. Pluto (considered by many to be a modern ruler of Scorpio) ushers us into the Underworld and encourages us to explore. We tend to hope we can just hop on the down-escalator, camera poised, and treat it like a sight-seeing adventure. However, just as we need to allow our eyes to adjust to a dark room before we can see what is there, we need to adjust our perceptions, perspective and attitude before we're able to see with any amount of clarity.

There are many versions of this archetype of venturing into the dark unconscious, including that of Kore/Persephone whom Pluto abducts into his deep realm and compels to return to him for half the year. Once you have had a taste of seeing below the surface of your awareness, you can't ever return to the innocent illusion that life consists only of what you consciously acknowledge.

In Descent to the Goddess, a much older version of the myth is told. The Queen of Heaven, Inanna, goes to visit her sister, Ereshkigal, the Queen of the Great Below, in order to witness the latter's funeral for her husband. Ereshkigal demands that even the Queen of Heaven must undergo what everyone else does in her journey into that cavernous realm. At each level, Inanna must remove each of her adornments until she is naked and humbled.

In other words, for us to venture into Scorpio's realm, we must let go of our preconceptions, egotism, pride and vanity before we are able to be open enough to receive the insights and gifts of what lies in that shadow's domain. Until our awareness becomes accustomed to that psychological darkness, the truth that can be found there may seem frightening. As in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda wisely advises the alarmed Luke Skywalker that he won't need his weapons walking into the cave, since all he'll encounter there is a projection from within himself.

The Scorpio energy brings us to an encounter with something deep inside ourselves that already exists. We learn to distinguish what is really there from what our fears tell us is there. Like Inanna, we lose layer after layer of illusions that obscure our perception and experience of our true selves. Eventually we are able to see beyond our fears and assumptions. The realization begins to dawn that the howling banshee is really the cries of our Inner Child longing to be loved. The movements lurking in the shadows are the feelings, thoughts and perceptions that come from our authentic self and show us truth about who we really are and perhaps about others too.

At this New Moon, among the most striking features is that both Chiron and Neptune are stationary and that they are in an extremely tight square to Mercury. Chiron has turned direct a mere 10 hours before the New Moon is exact, and Neptune turns direct a day after the New Moon. Although Chiron and Neptune technically have only one exact conjunction (Feb.17.2010), they are only 9 itty-bitty minutes of arc apart as they station direct.

Chiron stationary can be as straightforward as dealing with health issues or physical shortcomings, or as complex as an existential struggle to balance a distasteful reality with a vision of spiritual potential. Neptune stationary could feel like an undertow in the ocean that pulls us away from our day-to-day plans, or can be a time when we are able to accept and surrender to a higher truth beyond our ego's control.

In both cases, since this is the direct station, this is a turning point in the retrograde process when "the penny drops" and our understanding finally catches up to our experience of the last several months. We might form a decision or conclusion about something we've been struggling with, or we could start to understand more clearly something we've been resistant to.

Stationary planets' energies are much more intense. It's kind of like putting your finger through a candle flame. If you do it quickly, it's not a big deal. But if you do it slooooooowly, you REALLY FEEL IT! And when this stationary energy coincides with another momentous planetary event—the New Moon—then it becomes burned into the unfolding energy that develops throughout the lunar cycle. So this New Moon cycle is likely to involve a dissolving of resistance to seeing something in the shadow that we perhaps haven't wanted to be true.

Mercury is in tight square aspect (90°) to a super-charged Chiron-Neptune conjunction (as little as 7 arc-minutes from exact, or 7/60ths of a degree). Mercury is also in Scorpio, which already takes us to the threshold of our deeper awareness and asks us to venture further into the shadow. This combination proclaims the need to let go of old illusions that obscure our ability to surrender to a higher truth. It's also an invitation to move into a deeper state of self-acceptance about our human shortcomings and imperfections.

The Sun-Moon conjunction itself (the New Moon) is actually not firmly wired into the rest of the chart. There's a sesqui-quadrate (135°) to Uranus, which suggests that deeper insights could come unexpectedly or through an experience that takes us on a detour away from our usual path. Or, we might encounter a situation that seems to smack us upside the head to get our attention so that we can learn something new about what lurks in our shadow.

The Sun-Moon is also in a semi-sextile (30°) to Saturn, suggesting that we might get caught in the net of trying to reconcile these unexpected or mysterious experiences with what (we think) we know about reality or what we're expecting to find. In other words, our reality tracker might feel like it's malfunctioning and keep trying to reset itself. The trick is to figure out if it's showing you new information that needs to be integrated into your world view or if it's your resistance to something that keeps trying to distract you.

While Mercury is square to Chiron-Neptune, it is also trine to Jupiter and Uranus. This should help with your ability to be receptive to new information that breaks you out of your usual way of understanding things. Insight, intuition and clarity are resources you can draw on through this lunar cycle.

Venus is still retrograde and still in Scorpio—barely! She is in the first degree of Scorpio and about to retrograde back into Libra until the end of November, turning direct on Nov.18. This brings yet another energy coaxing us down into the Underworld shadow.

According to astrologer Gary Caton, Venus becomes visible roughly 9 days after its retrograde conjunction to the Sun (Oct.28). That means Venus should start to become visible just before sunrise in the eastern sky—right around about the time of the New Moon. Emergence of new beginnings all 'round! Like all new beginnings, this is likely to come as a stirring of our depths; like seeing movements in the shadows that can't quite be identified until we become more acclimatized and receptive to the energy.

Scorpio is a very creative energy, so any kind of creative expression could be used to draw out this emerging beginning in your life. If you are a creative person, try writing poetry, painting, drawing, dancing, sculpting or anything that can give form to the feelings deep inside. If you think you're not creative, you could use this time to explore and get to know the natural creativity that everyone has. If that doesn't appeal to you, try being around someone else's creative energy. Go to a concert and listen to deeply moving music of the genre of your choice. Visit an art gallery and really let the passion of the artwork speak to you. Watch any of the talent shows on TV that present music or dance. Or just go somewhere secluded and watch a sunset or sunrise.

When you're in the grip of Scorpio energy in a very personal way, it's good to have a lifeline and a guide to give you some clarity, insight and encouragement, and keep you moving through the shadow. I'm available for private readings, so please contact me for more information.

Nov.06 – Mercury square Neptune (25:54 of Scorpio/Aquarius)

Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.

Nov.06 – Mercury square Chiron (26:04 of Scorpio/Aquarius)

Your mental focus and perceptions may feel a bit strained right now. You could find yourself locked in a struggle of indecision that stems from a "glass half empty" versus "glass half full" dilemma. It may be difficult to stay objective and evenly balanced in your perspective, but by working with this you could also find a new mental focus that gives you increased clarity. It might be tempting to sink into cynicism as a way to deal with what seems like a no-win situation. On the other hand, this transit could bring your mental perspective to a kind of "healing crisis" that forces you to get a better grip on the ideas, communication and frame of mind that have been problematic for you. Instead of reaching for extremes (hoping this will clarify the path in front of you), it will help more if you can take a few steps back to allow all the conflicting and out-of-sync elements to coexist together – creative paradox. If you have been in denial about something, this could be a turning point that allows you to grapple with the complex reality of your situation.

Nov.06 – Mercury trine Uranus (27:01 of Scorpio/Pisces)   Nov.07 in UK, AU

Unusual ideas, flashes of insight and seeing unexpected possibilities are all part of this transit. You may find it easier to be open-minded right now, especially about insights that have eluded you. Your ability to see beyond your usual horizon of perception can bring visionary brainwaves, as well as a fun sense of humour. You might be inspired to experiment with something new or do something out of character. You might have an impulse to break free of old habits or constraints. This can be a very liberating transit that opens your mind to new possibilities and ideas. However, be careful that you don't become so liberated and spontaneous that you become erratic, hyper or reckless. Words may come tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to consider their wisdom, or you might find yourself talking non-stop and interrupting, creating a bit of awkwardness in those around you. On the other hand, you might also find the clarity and vision that gives you the words to speak your truth with new conviction. It's a great time to do some writing or other form of self-expression, especially if it's spontaneous or involving technology.

Nov.07 – North America returns to Standard Time

If you're in the same time zone as North America and your region has been observing Daylight Savings Time, it's now time to return to Standard Time. That means you turn your clocks back one hour on the night of Nov.06, so that when you wake up you'll be looking at the correct time. If you're not sure, you can check if your region is returning to Standard Time today.

Nov.07 – Neptune stationary Direct (25:54 of Aquarius) ("What's a station?"  Article about stations.)

Neptune now turns direct after being retrograde for a little over 5 months. For up to a week before and after this date, you might feel a bit dreamy, disconnected, depressed, sluggish or scatter-brained. The Neptune energy takes you into a non-rational, intuitive place and can stir up feelings and issues from the unconscious.

Vivid dreams could give you insight into situations you have been wrestling with, and your intuitive sensitivity might seem to come out of nowhere. Or you might experience the opposite—your dreams elude you and you feel cut off from your usual intuitive sense. What is happening is that your "right-brain" (intuitive, creative, non-rational, faith-oriented) is passing the torch to your "left-brain" (rational, logical, linear, practical), and you can get caught in the whirlpool of transition.

Try not to control the process, but allow it to carry you and point you in a different direction. The learning you have gathered over the last five months or so—related to spirituality, longing, inspiration, creativity, imagination, fantasy, divination and intuition—can now start to be applied more directly in your life over the next few months. It may be possible to channel your experience into a creative form—possibly artistic, but definitely creating something new out of what has been, which can ultimately be healing and uplifting.

Nov.07 – Venus Retrograde enters Libra (until Nov.29)  Nov.08 in UK, AU

Venus is retrograde in Libra, which means that Libra's qualities are likely to be especially strong, although not necessarily easy to express or communicate directly. Your urge to connect with others socially, romantically or sexually is likely to be quite strong, but so is Libra's famous indecisiveness. So, for example, you might feel the need to reach out to someone but hesitate, uncertain if your attention would be welcome or not. Agreements could become strained in the places where they are weak and therefore they might need to be renegotiated. If the agreement is no longer workable, it could break down completely and the whole basis for it needing to be rethought from "square one." Creative endeavours could either become especially inspired during the retrograde period, or might seem to go into hibernation during this time. Remember that Libra is all about balance, so whatever Venus does during her retrograde time will usually swing the pendulum the other way, in order to balance out something in your life that needs to be rebalanced.

Nov.08 – Mercury enters Sagittarius (until Nov.30)   Nov.09 in AU

Communication, ideas, thoughts and perceptual "spark" become expanded in Sagittarius. Your mental focus tends toward a philosophical and spiritual outlook that seeks the highest truth in the broadest context. However, it's not always easy for the conscious mind to assimilate and digest such a vast territory of knowledge, or to find the higher meaning in mountains of raw information. You might feel a bit overwhelmed by trying to take in such a panoramic view of your world, but the gifts from doing so are abundant and inspiring! To get the most out of this transit, try learning something new that expands your horizon. Or pick a situation in your life and imagine that you're looking at it from a mountaintop – what do you see from way up there that you can't see when you're closer to the ground? Just remember that whatever visions and insights you get from doing this, these are SOME of the truths to be found, but not necessarily the only truth. Leave room in your new understanding to remember that every mountaintop shows a slightly different view and that this doesn't make one mountain right and the others wrong.

Nov.09 – Pluto conjunct the North Lunar Node (03:35 of Capricorn)   Nov.10 in AU

Intensity, power and transformation are in focus under this transit. This is a time when we take on the lessons of Pluto in a long-term process of learning how to discover, develop and wield your strength in a more effective way. This transit often brings the need to face situations or issues about how you handle power, the balance of power and personal empowerment, as well as the opposite of these—powerlessness, power struggles and submission to forces that seem beyond your control.

When faced with these forces, how do you respond? Often our automatic reaction is to try to control the situation and/or the people around us, in an attempt to make the situation more manageable and decrease our stress. However, this becomes exhausting and requires constant and escalating investment of energy to maintain that control, assuming the situation can be controlled in the first place.

It's easy to get bent out of shape in this kind of scenario, so that you have to maintain a façade and cannot simply be yourself anymore. Instead, it is healthier, more realistic and more effective in the long run to find ways to be centered and grounded, and focus on that which is within your personal control. That includes drawing firmer boundaries, as well as learning to make clearer distinctions between what is merely uncomfortable versus what is truly unacceptable. This learning and development of personal strength will unfold gradually over many years.

This is a very infrequent transit that occurs only about every 16-17 years. Were you, or was someone you know, born under this transit? 1909 (Gemini), 1926 (Cancer), 1943 (Leo), 1960 (Virgo), 1977 (Libra), 1994 (Scorpio), 2010 (Capricorn), 2027 (Aquarius).

Nov.15 – Mars sextile Saturn (13:02 of Sagittarius/Libra)

There is an opportunity to harness the energy of willpower using practical discipline. Your physical and mental energy are likely to be stable and enduring, or else they can become this way more easily than usual by applying a sustained focus of effort. This is a great transit if you need to be productive or to make progress in a goal that you are working toward. The thing to watch out for is a tendency to be over-cautious to the point where you get stuck in the planning stage and don't get much done. Or, you might try to rush into the production phase before your plans are fully formed. This transit works best when these areas are brought into balance.

Nov.15 – Sun trine Jupiter (23:30 of Scorpio/Pisces)   Nov.16 in AU

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it can click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time, finding new meaning in your live and the events that unfold around you. Self-confidence can run high now, and you could feel inspired to fight for justice or some cause. At the same time, there is a chance that all this self-assurance and "knowing" could go overboard into over-confidence, dogmatism or over-indulgence if it's not grounded in realism and humility. Just use your best judgment and enjoy this warm, shining energy!

Nov.17 – Mercury sextile Saturn (13:19 of Sagittarius/Libra)   Nov.18 in UK, AU

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and decisions now. It's a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your ambitions. Or, you may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals, by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the past several months. This will probably require a bit of effort on your part to make it happen, but the opportunity is there if you choose to take it. This transit can bring mental stability and the ability to apply your mental focus in a practical and grounded way. It may be easier to see things realistically and objectively. Creative energy can become productive and rewarding, if you use it methodically or logically.

Nov.18 – Sun square Neptune (25:56 of Scorpio/Aquarius)

Your ideals, hopes and wishful thinking may loom a little too large during this time, making you prone to disappointment and disillusionment. You might want a fantasy or dream to come true so much that you disconnect from the reality that seems to be in the way – only to find that the obstacle was serving a positive purpose after all. Your imagination may be very active now, but not easy to control or balance with reality. However, it can be a very creative time if you're able to harness that imagination for productive use. Unconscious urges and longings may be especially close to the surface, so you have an opportunity to learn more about the hidden forces that drive you (and perhaps distort your view of the world around you). Spiritually, you might discover that your yearning for enlightenment is not the straightforward path you had hoped for, but it can be just as valuable (although disappointing) to discover what is *not* your best path. Emotionally you may feel a bit overwhelmed, discouraged or confused. On the plus side, you have an opportunity to observe a deeper part of you, which is usually camouflaged against the distracting background of day-to-day life. There is tremendous creative, spiritual and healing potential to be found by listening to and working with the inner voices from those depths.

Nov.18 – Sun square Chiron (26:09 of Scorpio/Aquarius)   Nov.19 in AU

Your self-confidence and patience may be a bit strained right now, stretched by the urge to break free of chronic constraints. Motivation and self-esteem may seem to sag and suffer from old problems that you thought were resolved. This is probably because you are seeing "the flaws in the system" that are preventing you from getting the results you want. It will help to take a fresh approach to your situation. You may need to let go of what you think the results "should be" or how they should come to you. Be open to getting what you want in a different form than you were expecting. You may have to work extra hard for results now, especially if it means having to find a different route to success. If it seems like a door of opportunity has closed, look for an unexpected advantage or hidden alternative. This could allow you to tap into other opportunities that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

Nov.18 – Jupiter stationary Direct (23:29 of Pisces)   Nov.19 in AU ("What's a station?"  Article about stations.)

For up to a week before and after this date, you may feel a surge of idealism, inspiration and confidence. A quest for knowledge, truth, optimism and faith could become a beacon of energy in your life. On the other hand Jupiter could also bring an increase of judgement, blame and elitism. Jupiter has been retrograde for about 4 months. It is now changing direction again and resuming its normal direct motion. You may have been exploring and developing the deeper qualities of spirituality, beliefs, confidence, knowledge, faith and/or optimism during that time. Or you might have found ways to expand your horizons—directly through travel or indirectly through the study of other cultures and languages. For the next 3 months (as Jupiter retraces its steps through the Shadow), you can start to apply and integrate what you've learned over the past 4 months. For example, if you have been taking a course or exploring your religious beliefs, this might be a time when you are able to put your discoveries into practice or place them into your worldview. This turning point may be uplifting, overwhelming, inspiring and/or illuminating. You could discover new meaning in areas of life that had become stale or worn out, or you might realise that your old ways of understanding don't work for you anymore and need to be let go. Whatever you've learned or gained over the last 4 months, it is now available to be expressed and used more openly and directly in your life.

Nov.18 – Venus Stationary Direct (27:39 of Libra) (Nov.19 in AU) ("What's a station?"  Article about stations.)

For up to a week before and after this date, you may experience or witness a shifting of energy affecting finances, relationships, love, resources, values pleasure, beauty, harmony and/or balance. Situations or issues related to these areas that have been occupying your attention during the past 6-7 weeks (while Venus has been retrograde) may reach a turning point now. It is a time when decisions and choices could be made—perhaps out of necessity.

If you have felt unusually introverted or extroverted during the retrograde period, this could shift back the other way again. If you have experienced difficulties or challenges in close relationships, this may be a time when decisions can (and perhaps must) to be made about them. Adjustments, compromises or renegotiations may be necessary; and if this is not possible or tolerable, it might be necessary to consider ending the relationship. During the retrograde phase, you may have encountered people or social situations from your past, and now it's time to decide if you want to continue with the contact or to bring closure and move on.

You might have experienced a change in your finances—for the better or worse. This change could simply revert to its previous state, according to a natural cycle of ebb and flow. Or, you might be faced with a choice of what to do from here—to change something in your life so that your situation improves (or so that an improvement continues), or to let go and move beyond this period of temporary change.

Whatever you have learned, embraced, questioned or invested your time in during the last 6-7 weeks, you will begin to apply and integrate in a new way over the next 4-5 weeks (while Venus is in the Shadow). This has been a detour allowing you to explore hidden territory, complete unfinished business or reconsider possibilities in the affected areas listed above. It's time to come back to the main path again, bringing with you new learning and values that will gradually be integrated into your life. The Direct Station is another shift in your life's balance point that enables you to keep moving, changing, growing and evolving.

Nov.19 – Sun trine Uranus (26:47 of Scorpio/Pisces)

You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are let loose during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. You may get a flash of insight, a burst of courage or a surge of inspiration under this transit. The spirit of who you are can become released now, possibly leading to you behaving a bit "out of character." It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so, that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. If your self-confidence, self-expression or self-esteem have been stifled or dampened lately, these could come flying out rather erratically, carelessly or chaotically. Strive to have fun pushing the envelope without ripping it. ;-)

Nov.20 – Mercury conjunct Mars (17:07 of Sagittarius)   Nov.21 in AU

Spontaneous or impulsive words may come flying out of your mouth under this transit! If you've been struggling to keep opinions or observations to yourself, you might find it hard to keep them quiet, especially if you feel strongly about the situation. You might see things as more "cut and dried" than usual. Although you might feel frustrated if things don't happen in a direct, quick, straightforward way, it can also be a good time to make decisions and move forward with plans. On one hand, this can have a positive effect because it can give you courage to speak your mind and assert yourself candidly and honestly. On the other hand, you might also come across as abrupt, cranky, argumentative or even downright hostile, especially if you've been stuffing down anger or resentment for a while. This transit represents a new beginning in how you can handle self-assertiveness, communication and decision-making. By "listening to" your impulses, passions and urge to speak your truth, you can get an idea how your "inner voice" wants to emerge – and how to do that without annihilating the other person. ;-)

Sabian Symbol for Taurus30: Peacock parading on an ancient lawn.

Sabian Symbol for the
Full Moon in Taurus

Taurus 30

A peacock parading on an ancient lawn.

Strut your stuff!

This Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") depicts a bird, the peacock, which is often associated with Venus, probably because of its magnificent beauty.

Peacocks have symbolized a variety of qualities in many different cultural and religious traditions: vision, renewal, spirituality, immortality and awakening—very fitting for a degree that represents transition.

The Sun is currently in the opposite degree; the final degree of Scorpio. This symbol is A Halloween jester. These symbols show the transition from Taurus to Gemini and Scorpio to Sagittarius.

The peacock is a message to take your Taurus gifts and express them at their Gemini best. The jester urges you to take the gloomy depths of Scorpio and Halloween (with its connection to death) and to "lighten up" with Sagittarian joviality and optimism.

Yet, both can be overdone. As the peacock, you might be tempted to flaunt what you have in a pretentious way. Your Taurus substance and worth could become a garish display that misses the deeper value of what it took for you to acquire and cultivate those gifts.

As the jester, you might be tempted to make light of the deeply cathartic experiences in Scorpio to the point that you trivialize them, thus losing some of the benefit of having gone through them. The idea is to balance out the heaviness of those experiences with lightness, not to dismiss them as silly.

There's an intriguing synchronicity about having a 29-degree Full Moon in Taurus right after Venus goes direct from her latest retrograde cycle.

Venus is the planetary ruler of Taurus. Taurus is about tending and nurturing the seed as it grows, and providing whatever is necessary to sustain and enhance life. The Full Moon is about manifestation, birthing and embodiment following a period of gestation and growth. And a 29-degree Full Moon—the second of 5 in a row, by the way!—is about closure, completion and transition. And this particular Venus retrograde cycle marked the beginning of a transition from Scorpio into Libra for this part of the long-term Venus retrograde cycle pattern.

All of this put together speaks of this Full Moon being an important turning point, both in the short run and in the long run. Now here's the catch: trying to coax Taurus through change is like trying to push a bull!

Oops! I almost forgot!!

(Well I did forget, but I'm adding this quickly after posting this article. ;-)

This is a Blue Moon!  Not by the popular definition, but by the older, original, correct definition!

Read all about this in my article, Blue Moon Lunacy.

Taurus is a Fixed Earth sign. The Fixed quality is pretty much what it sounds like—whatever state it's in is where it's likely to stay without some rather compelling incentive to do otherwise. The element of Earth is kind of what that sounds like too—it's practical, it's real, and it's in it for the long haul. Spontaneous, flexible and adaptable are not words you'll find easily in the vocabulary of either category. So to ask them to bring them to something like transition or transformation, it's got to be sloooooow, careful and leave lots of room for other things to carry on while it's happening.

What kinds of other things? Taurus is also about pleasure! It governs the physical senses. Comfy textures for the skin. Beautiful music for the ears. Sunsets, flowers and mountain streams for the eyes. Scrumptious food for the tongue and its aroma for the nose. You've got to do something to pass the time while you're in that Fixed state, right? You might as well enjoy the luxury and abundance of life!

This is an image of Ferdinand the Bull who would rather relax and smell the flowers than fight. But just like in the story of Ferdinand, it seems there's always a bee that comes along to sting you in the behind and break the pleasure spell, making it necessary to get up and get moving and be more productive.

T-square with the Full Moon in Taurus

The bee in this Full Moon's bonnet (as your grandmother might have put it) is the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune, which forms a T-square aspect figure with the Sun-Moon opposition (i.e. the Full Moon).

Chiron, as the Wounded Healer archetype, pierces that calm Taurus surface and wants you to be sure that the healing, relaxation, pleasure and abundance go more than just skin deep. To do that, it might be necessary to let out some of the toxicity that lurks below the surface. As a result, your Inner Ferdinand might suddenly become volatile if your BS bucket becomes too full and you need to flush it. For example, a Taurus can smile sweetly only so long when someone is shovelling BS at them before they finally snort and charge!. So you might need to blow off some tension in order to clear out the emotional, social or even physical toxicity that's been building up inside you for a while.

Neptune is all about tranquility, peace and bliss, which would suit Taurus just fine. A problem can occur, though if your tranquility is disturbed by or based on something that's less than real, truthful or honest. Neptune could also bring deception, illusion, depravity, or even doing what seems like the right thing for all the wrong reasons. So your serenity might turn out to be based on false assumptions that start to crumble when challenged by a reality check. Or, what you believe might conflict with the solid facts or your actual experience when you start to take a closer look. Disillusionment, depression or sadness could follow, which interferes with that Taurus love of pleasure and calm.

What is more likely to happen than these worst case scenarios is that you may have to take stock of your abundance, assets, resources or values to see what is solid and what seems a bit mushy around the edges. This might involve your financial assets (Taurus loves a nice bankroll to lay its head on at night) or it could be a reassessment of your values and priorities.

What are you likely to find as you go through that economic, material, emotional, social or moral inventory? Venus is just newly direct after being retrograde since Oct.08, so this part of you is starting to wake up again after a journey through the underworld. With Venus currently trine Chiron and Neptune, it should be relatively easy to maintain a positive, upbeat attitude about what you hope to find in this brave new world.

Yod aspect figure

However, Venus is also at the apex of a Yod aspect configuration to the Moon sextile Uranus-Jupiter, so this reassessment and rebalancing could also feel a bit ambiguous, confusing, conflicted or just complicated. For example, relationships could be a bit precarious, as you might need to reassess who is still important in your life and who is there merely out of habit. Do you still share similar values, or has one of you moved on into a different direction?

As another example, you might need to establish a new balance between playing it safe to satisfy your security needs (emotional or material) and your desire to follow your impulses or take risks that could bring you closer to a higher vision of a better world.

Remember that with the Full Moon being at 29° this is a time of transition. And this is the second of FIVE consecutive Full Moons at 29° of their respective signs. One is an intriguing manifestation – five is downright archetypal! The number five is associated with the power of the mind to create or destroy. The last degree of a sign is the jumping off point where you say goodbye to one sign and transition from there to the next sign. It's a liminal space where life is somewhat fluid, shape-shifting and full of potential...but for what?

With the number five associated with this sequence of transitional Full Moons, it suggests you are in a gradual process of morphing into something new over the next several months, and depending on how you use that process, you could create something inventive and new or you could break something down. Neither direction is automatically good or bad—it all depends on what you're aiming for and what the Universe has in mind for you in terms of growth.

Creating something new might mean turning your back on what is already there, which might not be a good thing (e.g. if you create a new relationship with someone while you're still married to someone else). Destroying something might seem bad, but it could be a good thing if it means you are removing an obstacle that is blocking you from moving forward. It all depends on the context.

The Full Moon in Taurus is one of 5 stepping stones in a metamorphic journey. You are walking the path of the Trimurti: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer—not unlike astrology's Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable qualities. All are equally necessary in the evolution of life. One cannot exist without the others. At each step, you are tearing down what has run its course to make way for the new; you are creating something new out of the ruins; and you are deciding what to preserve and support which is the mortar that holds the building bricks together.

The first of the 29° Full Moons in October was in Aries—Cardinal, creative, initiative, getting the energy "out there." Now in November comes Taurus—Fixed, preserving, stabilizing and manifest. Next will be Gemini in December—Mutable, destroying in the sense that the consistency and predictability of the status quo must be challenged and changed. Then Cancer in January—Cardinal again, which finds a new focus, direction and purpose for that which has mutated, changed and metamorphosed. And finally Leo in February—Fixed Fire, which turns the energy into a stable form that is sustainable.

Each step, each Full Moon, represents a turning point and an opportunity to reorient yourself on your personal journey. There will be times when you are inspired, excited and hopeful. There will be other times when you feel discouraged, confused and lost. It's all part of the process and it's important that you not get stuck in one place. I'm available for a personal reading to help you get back on track when you feel like you've wandered off the path—and to help you discover the ways that you're doing better than you think! Nov.22 – Sun enters Sagittarius (until Dec.21)

Happy Solar Return to all Sagittarians! While the Sun is in Sagittarius, we all get to explore our horizons, seek our highest truth, discover our spirituality and gain fresh wisdom. Sagittarius energy encourages us to reach beyond our grasp, to exceed our limitations, and to rise above our primal impulses. Whether we are encountering other cultures, countries and languages, or expanding our horizons through new knowledge or spiritual awareness, this is a time to be uplifted and inspired. We are challenged to explore meaning in our lives and to connect with whatever we regard as sacred and sublime. In Sagittarius we also gather new knowledge and understanding, making sense of the patterns and themes within the raw information around us. It is not enough to simply have facts and data. Sagittarius presents us with the opportunity to reach for the highest truth we know, and then to exercise that truth in moral and ethical ways. The trap we must be careful to avoid is that it's easy to assume that our truth is truth for everyone else too, which is not necessarily the case. Our well-meaning wish for others to experience the inspiration and passion that we feel can seem to turn us into self-righteousness know-it-alls. It's tempting to believe that we are privy to knowledge that others are denied. There can be a fine line between sharing passionate knowledge versus shoving opinions down someone's throat. Everyone has their unique perspective on life, and therefore their own sense of meaning and truth that works for them. And yet, debating and challenging each other's knowledge, beliefs and values are also an important part of the Sagittarius passion for exploration. As the Sun journeys through Sagittarius, expand your awareness of how these issues play out in your life.

Nov.22 – Mercury enters the Shadow (19:37 of Sagittarius, until Jan.17.2011) ("What's a station?"  Article about stations.)

Mercury again enters the Shadow – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde in about 2½ weeks. During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through this same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more involved process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences—ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected—email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods.

The situations developing over the next 2 weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes—or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct.

During this retrograde cycle, Mercury travels between 19:37 of Sagittarius and 5:56 of Capricorn, making a number of major aspects to other transiting planets. It squares Jupiter and Uranus (Nov.25/27, Dec.20/21, Jan.10/11), sextiles Neptune and Chiron (Nov.27, Dec.20/21, Jan.10/11), and conjoins Pluto and the North Lunar Node (Dec.03/05, Dec.13/16, Jan.15/18). Be prepared to be surprised and have to look at things from an unusual, and perhaps even uncomfortable, perspective. Words better kept to yourself could come blurting out of your mouth more easily than is usual, even under Mercury retrograde. As a result, it will help to resolve to speak only what is true and just, although it will also be helpful to do so with compassion and empathy for all involved. If you're able to find the right balance between shocking honesty and sweet talking, the effect can be very powerful and transformative, allowing you to deal with a difficult, frightening or intimidating situation in a way that enhances your integrity and personal growth.

Nov.25 – Mercury direct square Jupiter (23:34 of Sagittarius/Pisces)   (Nov.26 in AU)

You may be seeing the weak links in your knowledge, understanding or beliefs right now. Your ideas and words might seem to fall short of what your mind envisions, or you might be unable to convince others of your point of view. As a result, it can be tempting to over-compensate with more self-confidence, faith or optimism than you actually have. Or, you might give out "too much information" by over-explaining or through nervous rambling. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else who does this and perhaps have a blaming or judgmental reaction to them. This is an opportunity to learn something about how you might jump to conclusions or blame, possibly triggered by a situation that challenges your beliefs, opinions or perspective. To learn more about this part of yourself, try taking some time to think about what is really bothering you or what you really need to say in that situation. There may be a higher truth to be found if you open your mind to something you're reluctant to acknowledge, rather than looking for a "final truth" around which to close it.

Nov.27 – Mercury direct sextile Neptune (26:01 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)   (Nov.28 in AU)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit, with a little applied effort and focus. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) The possible disadvantage is that you might want so much to reach a state of inspired intuition, magical outlook and effortless communication, that you are willing to be deceived rather than fall short of what you are hoping for. Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

Nov.27 – Mercury direct sextile Chiron (26:19 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)   (Nov.28 in AU)

Your mental focus and communication could get an injection of healing energy under this transit, as long as you are prepared to put some effort into getting it. Your spirits can become uplifted now, from seeing a light at the end of the tunnel or from finding a light that guides you along the path in front of you. It will not, however, make the tunnel or the path go away; you'll still have to walk the walk. But your mental perspective can become more accepting of inconsistencies and frustrations under this transit, which can alleviate a lot of stress and make the journey a bit smoother. Mental struggles and critical "self-talk" may find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings peace of mind. You have an increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems, by providing insightful feedback. To get the most out of this transit, aim to find a mental outlook and communication style that can tolerate contradiction without having to eradicate one in order to justify the other.

Nov.27 – Mercury direct square Uranus (26:41 of Sagittarius/Pisces)   (Nov.28 in UK, AU)

Flashes of insight can show you new clarity but you might not like the answers you get, since they could disturb your logical perception of what's what. You might get some news or learn come information that shakes you up in some way. This isn't necessarily bad, since this may be necessary to open your mind to something you've been resisting. There's a Higher Truth here that wants to be told (by you or to you), but the way it's phrased can make a big difference in the reaction. There is a risk of "shooting off your mouth before your brains are loaded," as the saying goes, and impulsive or reckless communication and ideas could create more problems than they solve. It will probably help to listen inside yourself first to discover what you really need to say, and then figure out how to say it in a way that doesn't cause unnecessary damage. Strive to shine a light of truth without blinding anyone with it.

Nov.29 – Mars square Jupiter (23:41 of Sagittarius/Pisces)   (Nov.30 in AU)

Under this transit your energy is more accessible, but this could be more problematic than helpful. On one hand, you have more enthusiasm and motivation available to take bold steps toward your goals. However, you might be forced to do this out of a sense of moral coercion, rather than freely choosing it. Or, your actions could be triggered by exasperated impulse more than by a sense of what is right for that moment. Impulses are likely to become easily amplified, but also more difficult to control. This includes anger, sexuality, aggression and assertiveness. Confidence could come across as arrogance. Courage might become reckless or brazen. If you find it difficult to bring out these qualities in yourself, they may come spurting out in a way that might be frightening or intimidating. But once your energy has emerged, you are in a better position to learn how to harness it, use it, work with it and summon it at will.

Nov.29 – Venus enters Scorpio (until Jan.07)   (Nov.30 in UK, AU)

Venus is the planet of relationships, interaction, beauty, pleasure and material resources. She struts through Scorpio with attitude! As a result, we may experience sensuality, sexuality and intimacy in a more intense, in-your-face kind of way. You might feel the need to establish a better balance of power with others that is pleasant and even-handed on the surface but also deals with the more gritty or intense energy that tends to lurk under the surface. It may be easier to attract what (or who) you want now, by focusing your intent and interest on the object of your affection and desire. However, there can also be a danger of becoming manipulative, controlling or devious to get what you want. Strive to become centred in your deepest heart's desire through steadfast self-honesty. Aim to avoid becoming obsessed with power, wealth or lust so that you lose sight of your true light inside. This is a good transit to take joy in your instinctive nature.

Nov.31 – Mercury enters Capricorn (until Dec.18)   (Dec.01 in UK, AU)

Cheerful, adaptable Mercury travels through conventional, structured Capricorn, bringing out his analytical, focused side. This is a good time to plan your projects and map out a game plan to reach your goals. It is probably best to choose discipline over distraction. Communication, ideas and awareness may become serious, structured, grounded and manifest now. Just don’t let them become suppressed or censored. This is a great time to do some serious planning and organizing for future projects and goals. It is also a good time for analyzing and evaluating what you have been involved with during the past year or so. What have you learned? What information has come to you that has led you into new directions? What goals have you achieved, and what goals do you want to pursue now? What plan of action is required to get you from here to there? It may be a time when you can face some hard reality and tough decisions better than you normally do. Because Mercury in Capricorn tends to be serious and factual, it may also be a time when you are more prone to depression or discouragement. It will help to schedule regular breaks in your routine to get away and plug your head into a different perspective for a while.

Dec.01 – Mercury direct sextile Venus (00:42 of Capricorn/Scorpio)  (Dec.02 in AU)

There is a potential to benefit from social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness during this transit, although a certain amount of effort is needed to make this happen. It can be a good time for negotiating contracts and other agreements, especially if you consciously focus your intent on achieving balance with your counterpart, partner or opponent that results in a win-win situation for all concerned. There is also potential to appreciate and express beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone in your life that you want to get closer to, try speaking gently and listening receptively, which can be the key that opens the door to harmonious interaction. Creative ideas can also find expression now if you apply your conscious awareness to bring them into focus. The thing to watch for is a tendency to use manipulation to achieve an advantage, which might be done by you or to you. Keep communication straightforward and clear, and find diplomatic ways to deal with manipulation if you sense it happening.

Dec.02 – Mars sextile Neptune (26:05 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)  (Dec.03 in AU)

There is potential for inspired action now. You could achieve a softening or soothing of the blunt force of anger, frustration, confrontation and conflict, without this resulting in powerlessness or passivity. It may be easier to move forward with your plans and intentions based on the power of faith or ideals. It's important to not get lost in those ideals to the point where you lose sight of what's realistic, but this is a time when you may be more inclined to take a leap of faith and say "Oh what the heck!" Your emotional impact on others (or their impact on you) could be greater than is intended or expected, so use this expanded energy wisely.

Dec.03 – Mars sextile Chiron (26:27 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)

This transit gives you the opportunity to take action that can bring some healing resolution to some ongoing problems you've been having. For example, if you've been suffering from weakened energy or chronic health problems, this transit could bring a bit of relief, especially if you're willing to invest some effort to move yourself forward. Or you might find that you have extra self-confidence to deal with a dilemma that has not wanted to go away. You might also find yourself in a position where you can help others find some relief or empowerment related to their suffering and chronic struggles. Problem solving of all kinds can benefit by taking an attitude of proactively doing what you can do, and then let go of what you can't.

Dec.03 – Mars square Uranus (26:40 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Dec.04 in AU)

Erratic action and unpredictable impulses can surface under this transit. Active energy is more available now, but it can be very hard to control its direction, speed, intensity or predictability. Under this volatile atmosphere, unconscious or suppressed emotions (like anger, frustration, fear or desire) can jump out when you least expect them. Being accident prone is not uncommon. This can be great if you're trying to release inhibitions, find courage to sprint forward or break out of an old habit. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that your actions won't turn out to be destructive, counter-productive or too much of a good thing. You might be tempted to take greater risks than is wise, but this risk-taking impulse can also break you out of a rut too. It's important to use your best judgment when faced with this kind of potent yet volatile energy.

Dec.03 – Mercury direct conjunct Lunar North Node (02:48 of Capricorn)  (Dec.04 in AU)

Ideas are in focus, especially when they're shared with others. It could be a time when you observe or notice something new, giving you a new perspective that you will mull over for the coming several months. Or you might be called upon to give a talk or presentation that shares information with others. It might be an especially active time with emails, Facebook, Twitter or texting. Communication and collection of thoughts and ideas is the central theme here. Keep your eyes, mind and curiosity open – the world could be showing you something important and fascinating!
