How to Ride a Wild Centaur

Sagittarius is symbolized by the Archer—someone who wields a bow and arrow and who aims high and far. But this is no ordinary archer. This is a centaur—half man, half horse.

Chiron is the most well-known of the centaurs, but mythology sources differ about whether Chiron belongs to Sagittarius or Centaurus—both constellations depicting centaurs. Perhaps for our purposes, Sagittarius represents Chiron the wise teacher. Certainly the centaur figure itself symbolizes the struggle between our animal impulses and our civilized humanity that is capable of achieving and becoming more, which is essential to Sagittarius if it is to aim its arrows straight and true.

The centaur energy in all of us strives to know how to harness our raw animal instincts and use them for a higher purpose. In that sense, we are always learning how to "ride a wild centaur." Chiron was one of the better behaved centaurs, who were generally a pretty wild and rowdy bunch of party animals. This is probably because Chiron had a divine ancestry, having been sired by Saturn. One lesson here seems to be that in order to master our baser nature, it is essential to connect with something greater than ourselves.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go on an adventure to discover what lies both high above and deep below the surface of your own psyche and spirit, as well as within others. So how DOES one ride a wild centaur? The New Moon chart gives us numerous clues and advice.

One

New Moon in Sagittarius: Ride tall, but not too high, in the saddle. Strive to gain wisdom so that you are guided by a higher purpose and a broader perspective. Seek meaning in everything you do, and share your knowledge and understanding with others that they can be inspired to discover their own meaning. Just remember that there are different kinds of truth. Stay flexible and open-minded.

Two

New Moon sextile Saturn in Libra: Harness that meaning and higher purpose in grounded, practical and responsible action. Strive for fairness and balance in those actions, so that you can avoid tilting off into extremes. Have a plan for how to get where you're going, and be clear about the method that will get you there. Ensure that whatever happens now, you are well grounded rather than reactive—and this grounding effect is available to you, if you are willing to reach out for it or develop it.

Three

Mars also in Sagittarius: Keep a quiver full of arrows close by. These might be "zingers"—quick comebacks to those who would dismiss, trivialize or ridicule what you have to offer. Or they might be your willingness to fight for what you believe is right and just. Keep your courage close at hand and be ready to be daring when need be. However, be careful not to become the one who attacks, trivializes, dismisses or ridicules what others believe. Always be guided by the highest purpose you know.

Four

Mars conjunct the Galactic Center: Aim high! Aim to the heart of what you want and what you're trying to achieve. Stay focused on what's important and central to the issues. Go big or go home!

Five

Jupiter, ruler of the Sagittarius New Moon, conjunct Uranus: Realize that it's a co-created journey between you and your centaur; between you and the Universe. Allow yourself to be surprised by what the Universe brings! If you think you've got all the answers, are you sure you're asking the right questions? Be aware that there's a fine line between truth that liberates and vindicates versus truth that's used to suffocate dissenting ideas or questions.

Six

Stationary Uranus turns Direct just 8 hours after the New Moon: Don't be surprised if you want to go one way and your centaur decides to go in another. Whatever you think you know now, be prepared to see something new, unexpected, controversial or disruptive over the next few weeks. Whatever situation you believe is hopeless or immovable, be open to seeing some kind of shift either in the situation itself or in your attitude to it.

Seven

Jupiter in Pisces is the final dispositor (by traditional rulership): Your centaur has a very creative imagination—use it wisely. The attitude, perspective and understanding that you adopt to events and situations now will have extended implications in all other aspects of your life to some extent. There is a ripple effect that will go out from whatever is initiated at the New Moon. Focus your intentions wisely.

Eight

Mars square Jupiter and Uranus: Try not to overreact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The events and unfolding dramas that take place over the next few weeks could feel like you're on a bucking bronco! Hold on tight, stay loose and try to roll with the ups and downs. Know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. When confronted with a conflict situation, ask yourself if it's worth blowing a gasket for. If it is, act from your highest level of integrity. Pick your battles wisely. Watch out for conflicts of interest between what your ego wants and what is in your highest interest.

Nine

Pluto conjunct Mercury conjunct North Node conjunct Mars: Check the weather report before galloping off into the sunset—you might want to adjust your course. This multiple conjunction is part of a gathering storm that will merge together at their closest on Dec.13. At its best, this combination can be a trigger that propels a developing process of transformation forward—or it could initiate that process. At its worst, it could light a fuse that explodes and releases pent-up anger and all the words you've been biting back and swallowing, trying to avoid a blow-up. Somewhere in the middle is an opportunity to explore the energies lurking below the surface, which otherwise might sabotage your best intentions if not acknowledged and understood. In the optimistic light of the Sagittarian New Moon, this collective energy that lurks in the darkness is best used to bring balance and realism to your perspective. There is no light without shadow, nor shadow without light. There is potential for deep growth in this combination over the next couple of weeks.

Ten

Pluto conjunct the Lunar Eclipse point of Jun.26.2010: Remember that your centaur is still a wild animal and acts on instincts that you might not understand or recognize. That powerful lunar eclipse back in June occurred at the same degree where Pluto and Mercury are now, and where Mars will catch up to them a week from now. More about this below, but in summary this could easily stir up a lot of the same intensity from last June. That means the lunar cycle beginning today is likely to have implications that stretch much farther than the next 4 weeks. In a nutshell, it's time to take whatever you've been working on since last June and apply a transformative intention to it.

Eleven

Next Full Moon is a Lunar Eclipse: And speaking of lunar eclipses, the Full Moon that brings fruition to this New Moon in Sagittarius will be a total lunar eclipse. We're heading back into eclipse season again! This will add a lot of energy, power, depth and potential to this New Moon. Aim your centaur—and your intentions—wisely.

Twelve

New Moon conjunct the Great Attractor: While mounted upon your centaur, enjoy the elevated view and gather information about the far horizon. It is intriguing to note that this New Moon occurs less than a degree from the Great Attractor—a huge, super massive something that is currently sitting at 14:02 Sagittarius. Drawing on an intriguing article by Philip Sedgwick, it might be said that this New Moon asks us to be willing to see all levels and perspectives of truth and wisdom, not just the stuff that makes you feel safe, important or powerful. It's possible you'll be able to see far-off implications that you or others aren't yet ready to acknowledge, embrace or understand. However, these insights, ideas and visions can be used as an inspiring destination to aim for—or as a lighthouse warning of danger to avoid.

Ride that wild centaur! If you find yourself riding in circles or even heading for a cliff-edge, I'm available for private readings to help you find clarity and meaning that will get you pointed in a better direction.

Dec.05 – Mercury conjunct Pluto (04:24 of Capricorn)  (Dec.06 in UK, AU)

Deep insights and passionate communication are possible under this transit ...although, so is speaking more forcefully than you intend to about things that require a bit of delicacy or discretion. This can be a new beginning in understanding the deeper motives and dynamics of what is happening in your life, although this could happen with great intensity or obsession. The light can finally start to go on in the darker corners that have eluded you. Although what you see there might be both illuminating and disturbing, it is ultimately something you can grow from, which can transform your mental outlook into something more meaningful and resilient. This is a time when you can start to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. You also have an increased ability to take thoughts, ideas and information and transform them into something healing ...or wounding. Choose your words carefully and mindfully. Writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit can help you gather the deeper qualities.

Dec.05 – Uranus stationary Direct (25:40 of Pisces)  (Dec.06 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Uranus now turns direct, after being retrograde for about 5 months. This often brings a turning point in situations involving spontaneity, freedom, breaking free of old patterns, rebellion and expressing your personal uniqueness. For up to a week before and after this date, it could feel a bit chaotic or erratic—or perhaps just spontaneous and exciting. However, Uranus' ultimate agenda is to clear the way for your true spirit to manifest in your life. You may experience unexpected changes, flashes of insight, or disruption of established situations that aren't working well (which might include computers, Internet, mass media, groups, friends or future plans). This can be the awakening of a new perspective, to be brought into a clearer focus through open-mindedness and being willing to try new things.

Dec.05-21 – Multiple Conjunction (Mercury, Mars, Pluto, Node)

This promises to be a pretty intense, deep, cathartic and possibly profound combination. All four points are within orb of a group conjunction for a couple of weeks—that's quite a long time! And to top it off, Mercury turns retrograde during this time. At its best, you could come to a difficult or ground-breaking decision under this transit, which gives you the courage and empowerment to see your way through a road block. This can be very transformative, since it can lead you to see things from a new perspective, which in turn allows you to see a new path.

At its worst, this combination might trigger latent defensiveness, anger rage, hostility, aggression or even violence in extreme and hopefully rare cases. This energy could bubble up from inside of you or be expressed by others around you. If you're in danger or at risk for being abused by someone, don't hesitate to get help or reach out to someone.

Most likely, your experience will be somewhere in between. You might find there are distressing or deep feelings, memories or impulses that well up from inside, or you could find yourself in a situation that's a bit intense or difficult to deal with. While not critical, it could still be a challenging or uncomfortable experience simply because it involves wrestling with some deep issues, struggling to find your point of power and moving yourself in the direction of your life's purpose. This could require you to deal with some obstacles in your path, including the possible need to get out of your own way by recognizing where you are holding yourself back. For example, you might be carrying an attitude that somehow sabotages your best efforts or you might be afraid of your own power and therefore are "pulling your punches."

One of the remarkable things about this multiple conjunction is that Mercury, Mars and Pluto will all be at precisely 04:41 of Capricorn at the same time! By this time, Mercury is retrograde and has come back to join Pluto at the same time that Mars arrives. This could have the effect of a nuclear collision or a nuclear fusion. Much of the outcome will depend on how aware you are of whatever gets stirred up, and how able you are to contain any impulsive reactions that are unlikely to bring an outcome you'll be happy with. You shouldn't have to feel pressured to respond in any particular way if that feels wrong to you. If things get overwhelming, set your pride down for a moment and take a step back to give yourself some space to have some sober second thoughts about how you want to handle the situation. And if it feels like something's getting stirred up that you need some support with, I'm available for a private reading that can help you get grounded and centered and clear about what's going on and which direction will be in your best interest.

Here's when that happens:

In the meantime, we'll be feeling the effects of this traffic jam for about a week before and after (or possibly longer if you're getting Pluto transits to your natal chart right now).

Dec.07 – Sun sextile Saturn (15:05 of Sagittarius/Libra)

You have an opportunity now to make some progress in obtaining results in your projects, career, ambitions and creative expression. It is possible to tap into a disciplined mindset, which can be used to take some steps toward goals that you're trying to manifest. You are surrounded by potential to achieve this, although it will not simply be handed to you – you will still have to work for it. Your mind and purpose are likely to be clear and strong now, enabling you to be decisive and productive. Leadership, management and organizing abilities are potentially high right now. Asserting your authority in a situation that calls for it can be done successfully, as long as you don't let yourself become rigid or bossy. It can be a good time to learn or practice new skills, or to apply yourself to any kind of serious study. It is also a time when you could formulate some solid plans for future projects or make some progress with current undertakings. Make the most of it!

Dec.07 – Mars enters Capricorn (until Jan.15)

Mars works very well in Capricorn – in fact, Mars can be quite the little workhorse! Action that pursues your ambitions, goals, projects or objectives can make serious progress under this transit. It may be easier to pace yourself and be disciplined in how you use your energy and effort now. Taking a serious, responsible attitude in your actions is likely to produce positive results, even more-so than usual. On the other hand, if you have difficulty with these qualities, and tend to rebel or fight to preserve your freedom, you might feel more like you're being strapped into a yoke and harness and ordered to plough the fields. However, the amount of serious, authentic work you're willing to put your energy into will likely pay off in kind. It can be a good time to show leadership or to make independent decisions that lead by example. Taking risks will make more sense if you prepare your strategy and map out your plan of action.

Dec.08 – Venus sextile Pluto (04:29 of Scorpio/Capricorn)  (Dec.09 in AU)

Close one-on-one relationships with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) could possibly benefit by being taken to a deeper level now, through creatively combining balanced harmony with deep connection. Just be careful that intimacy and bonding don't go over the top into obsession or domination. There is a brief opportunity now to become more authentic in how you relate to those close to you and how you establish a balance of power with them. The trick is to do this without trying to suppress, control or overpower the other person's interests. Financially, it is a time when you may have an opportunity to profit in your dealings with banks, insurance companies, taxes, and other institutions that deal with collective money.

Dec.10 – Mercury stationary Retrograde (05:56 of Capricorn)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?" Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets. )

Mercury now goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped during the station. During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress. Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is best to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures.

It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct.

In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible; for example, it's common to have to reschedule appointments. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

Mercury is retrograde in Capricorn, which can create a very serious mindset. It might be a bit of a struggle to maintain your optimism at times, especially if you keep trying to escape that seriousness by pretending it doesn't exist. If you have a tendency toward depression, this transit might bring that up to some extent, so it might be a good idea to be prepared for this with a list of coping strategies (things you can do that make you feel better about yourself). This can be a good time to slow down and lower your expectations a little -- not because you don't deserve better or because you're giving up, but because you're willing to be gentle with yourself and simplify your life a little. On the other hand, this can be a great time to apply yourself to some productive work on a project or goal you have. If you're facing a situation in your life that requires you to "get real" and get results, this transit can be a resource for that.

Dec.10 – Mercury retrograde sextile Venus (05:55 of Capricorn/Scorpio)  (Dec.11 in AU)

There is a potential to benefit from social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness during this transit, although a certain amount of effort is needed to make this happen. It can be a good time for negotiating contracts and other agreements, especially if you consciously focus your intent on achieving balance with your counterpart, partner or opponent that results in a win-win situation for all concerned. There is also potential to appreciate and express beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone in your life that you want to get closer to, try speaking gently and listening receptively, which can be the key that opens the door to harmonious interaction. Creative ideas can also find expression now if you apply your conscious awareness to bring them into focus. The thing to watch for is a tendency to use manipulation to achieve an advantage, which might be done by you or to you. Keep communication straightforward and clear, and find diplomatic ways to deal with manipulation if you sense it happening.

Dec.11 – Mars conjunct North Lunar Node (02:48 of Capricorn)  (Dec.12 in AU)

For up to a week before and after this date, you are likely to feel energized in some way. You might feel enthusiastic, active, passionate, easily angered or downright wired. Or you could be around others who are feeling this way. On the other hand, this energy might also be somewhat explosive, aggressive or overbearing in some way. At its worst, it could indicate violence, although it's more likely to increase energy levels in general. If you and others are in a positive head space, this raised energy can easily be used constructively. If in a negative head space, it could result in conflict, argument or hostility. The important thing is to find a constructive or beneficial outlet for this energy. It's a good time to try new things or take risks BUT make sure this is balanced with some solid common sense too.

Dec.13 – Mercury retrograde conjunct Pluto (04:41 of Capricorn)  (Dec.14 in UK, AU)

Dec.13 – Mercury retrograde conjunct Mars (04:41 of Capricorn)  (Dec.14 in UK, AU)

Spontaneous or impulsive words may come flying out of your mouth under this transit! If you've been struggling to keep opinions or observations to yourself, you might find it hard to keep them quiet, especially if you feel strongly about the situation. You might see things as more "cut and dried" than usual. Although you might feel frustrated if things don't happen in a direct, quick, straightforward way, it can also be a good time to make decisions and move forward with plans. On one hand, this can have a positive effect because it can give you courage to speak your mind and assert yourself candidly and honestly. On the other hand, you might also come across as abrupt, cranky, argumentative or even downright hostile, especially if you've been stuffing down anger or resentment for a while. This transit represents a new beginning in how you can handle self-assertiveness, communication and decision-making. By "listening to" your impulses, passions and urge to speak your truth, you can get an idea how your "inner voice" wants to emerge – and how to do that without annihilating the other person. ;-)

Dec.13 – Mars conjunct Pluto (04:41 of Capricorn)  (Dec.14 in UK, AU)

This transit is a volatile and powerful combination of energies, with enormous potential for both creative healing and destructive damage. At its best, this transit can spark a creative force for transformative change that rises from a deep, underlying truth and unconditional acceptance of ourselves, warts and all. At its worst, this energy can be cruel, violent or relentlessly obsessive, aiming to impose power and control over others. How you experience this will largely depend on how you deal with your wants and desires. Are you so attached to the outcome that you are focused only on the external effects and results? Or can you also focus on strengthening your empowerment from within, so that desired change begins with yourself? The urge to express sexual, passionate and intimate feelings may also run high now. Have fun with it, but remember to use good judgment too. Your powers of persuasion can be ardent and strong now...but since this transit applies to everyone, so can other people's. This could lead to zealous competition (think "Battle of the Titans") or to a powerful blend of passionate creativity (think "alchemical transformation"). Which will you choose?

Dec.16 – Pluto conjunct Jun.26.2010 Lunar Eclipse (04:46 of Capricorn) (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

That lunar eclipse in June 2010 was a humdinger! The Sun, Moon and Lunar Nodes dovetailed with the Cardinal Cross and created a Grand Cross with Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn and Pluto. This was the weekend of the G8/G20 Summit here in Toronto, Canada, and the ripple effects of what took place are still happening!

Now Pluto is crossing the same degree as that lunar eclipse. When a planet, especially a slow-moving planet, conjoins an eclipse point, it can stir up the energy of that eclipse again. For Pluto to cross that particular lunar eclipse point, it means this is likely to bring back the energy of the Cardinal Cross, even though the planets involved at that time are no longer closely aligned. This conjunction is within 1° orb from mid-November to mid-January, so the day it's exact is just the peak of this wave of energy.

So, what was happening in your life back around June? Go back to that lunar eclipse weekend and think about what was stirred up in your life or in your psyche at that time. What has happened to that since then? How have you changed, struggled and evolved in what you have done with or about that energy or event? Think of this Pluto transit as being a chance to take another step in the ongoing process that has unfolded since last June. You may be challenged to let go of something that has been haunting you since that time. Or, you might need to hold fast to something you've struggled to stay connected to. Or, it could be time to shift your thoughts or feelings about what happened then, to understand it in a different way by looking deeper at what was going on.

What's also interesting about this transit is that it coincides with the multiple conjunction of Mercury, Mars, Lunar Node and Pluto (see Dec.05-21 above). So this is no ordinary transit to reactivate eclipse energy! Be prepared for a possible wild ride and a profound opportunity to go spelunking through the caverns of the Underworld for a couple of weeks.

Pluto will return once more in September 2011, when it comes back and stations direct just 7 minutes of orb shy of crossing the eclipse point again. At that time there will be another Cardinal Cross formation with Venus opposite Uranus, T-squared by Pluto. We continue to live in "interesting times!" In 2011 Pluto will be within 1° orb from mid-July to mid-November.

Dec.16 – Mercury retrograde conjunct Lunar North Node (02:47 of Capricorn)

Ideas are in focus, especially when they're shared with others. It could be a time when you observe or notice something new, giving you a new perspective that you will mull over for the coming several months. Or you might be called upon to give a talk or presentation that shares information with others. It might be an especially active time with emails, Facebook, Twitter or texting. Communication and collection of thoughts and ideas is the central theme here. Keep your eyes, mind and curiosity open – the world could be showing you something important and fascinating!

Dec.16 – Sun square Jupiter (24:49 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Dec.17 in AU)

You may be inspired to expand far beyond your usual boundaries during this time, although this may or may not work in the way you hope it will. It can be a time of challenge, when you decide that now is the time to move beyond your current horizons and make the ultimate push for something you believe will bring you happiness, fulfilment and prosperity. How successful you are will probably depend on how prepared you are for what comes next. Your judgment and your ability to see things objectively and realistically can be a little "off" during this transit, since your hopes and ideals might distort what is actually possible. It can be easy to overestimate the envisioned results, or you might underestimate the amount of work necessary to sustain your dream and prevent it from being just a flash in the pan. Try to avoid being overconfident and making promises you can't keep (including to yourself).

Dec.18 – Sun sextile Neptune (26:23 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Although this is mostly a very positive energy, you could become so immersed in your longing for the ideal that you have trouble dealing with the less-than-ideal realities that still must be dealt with. Gaining the benefit from this transit will still require some effort.

Hope, optimism and imagination are in the air, which could bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity and imagination can be very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision, and you may experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential now to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately – although this will require your cooperation to take advantage of it. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Dec.18 – Mercury retrograde enters Sagittarius (until Jan.11.2011)  (Dec.19 in AU)

Mercury is retrograde in Sagittarius, which can challenge the mind more than it can comfortably handle. The conscious mind usually likes to sift through ideas at its own pace and piece these ideas together as they come up. Sagittarius tends to present the whole picture all at once, which can be overwhelming. You might find you are challenged to reach beyond your grasp intellectually, which could leave you feeling like you're juggling too many balls at once. Or, you might be so hungry for more and more information that you don't know how to stop and put it all together. Unconscious or hidden judgments and biases that you carry around might lurk just below the surface now, making them more visible than you would like them to be. On the other hand, this can be a good time to explore the ways that you tend to blame others (or yourself) for problems or imperfections. It is also a time when you can peek through the veil and see beyond your usual range of vision. As such, this transit can give you access to a more spiritual frame of mind that helps you deepen your understanding, expand your compassion and stretch your usual horizons.

Dec.18 – Sun square Uranus (26:44 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Dec.19 in AU)

Your world may experience a bit of a shake-up right now, as the Universe decides it's time to make things "interesting." This is a wake-up call, designed to loosen you up from the ways you have become too habitual, stuck or inhibited. The "radical rascal" in you may be itching to come out and stir up trouble, which on one hand might be necessary but also very disruptive and possibly even destructive. Be alert to new insights and opportunities disguised as accidents or crises. Your usual sense of self and purpose may become somewhat unsettled right now, but a space is likely being cleared to make room for new growth and possibilities. If you're looking to break old habits or break free of old restrictions, this may be the time – but it could create a mess that you'll have to clean up later. Resist the urge to rebel just for the sake of doing something different, and aim instead to break free of old forms of self-expression and ideals that don’t work for you anymore. Expect the unexpected and then surf the shock-wave.

Dec.18 – Sun sextile Chiron (27:00 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)  (Dec.19 in UK, AU)

This is a time when you have an opportunity to mend and heal the chronic struggles in your life. You may find new inspiration, motivation or confidence that can help rejuvenate waning enthusiasm or reconcile persistent problems, although you'll still have to apply effort to bring it all together. You might get the chance to demonstrate your ability to walk your own path in a new way. Or, you might get a peek inside the hidden shadow of your worries and discouragement, giving you new insight into how you might be unconsciously sabotaging your conscious efforts. You may have to face a bit of your own fear of failure or low self-esteem before you can get beyond these feelings and tap into the benefits of this transit – not because you are failing but because these concerns may arise in response to the new potential now available to you. By tapping into this potential for creative problem solving, you can bring some healing to whatever your situation is.

Dec.19 – Sun conjunct Mercury retrograde (28:02 of Sagittarius)  (Dec.20 in UK, AU)

When the Sun conjoins Mercury Retrograde, there is a new beginning in the areas of awareness, communication, use of information and exchange of ideas. This may or may not be heralded by a recognisable event or experience, although for a day or two your consciousness may shift. Your awareness and mental concentration may take a dip into the unconscious, becoming unusually murky and muddy, or it may rise into ultra-consciousness and become suddenly clear and lucid (afterwards returning to the usual Mercury retrograde fog). A new awareness or perspective on what has unfolded during the retrograde cycle thus far may surface now, or an unworkable attitude or perception of these events may fall apart under the weight of new information. This shift of awareness may be obvious or subtle, sudden or gradual, but this transit marks a turning point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. It also marks a time when mental awareness often goes further underground, for the rest of the retrograde period, making it a little harder to operate objectively and rationally in the outside world. Spend some time in your right-brain, intuitive, non-rational mind, which can coax your mental creativity and inventiveness to the surface.

Dec.20 – Mercury retrograde sextile Chiron (27:05 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)  (Dec.21 in AU)

Your mental focus and communication could get an injection of healing energy under this transit, as long as you are prepared to put some effort into getting it. Your spirits can become uplifted now, from seeing a light at the end of the tunnel or from finding a light that guides you along the path in front of you. It will not, however, make the tunnel or the path go away; you'll still have to walk the walk. But your mental perspective can become more accepting of inconsistencies and frustrations under this transit, which can alleviate a lot of stress and make the journey a bit smoother. Mental struggles and critical "self-talk" may find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings peace of mind. You have an increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems, by providing insightful feedback. To get the most out of this transit, aim to find a mental outlook and communication style that can tolerate contradiction without having to eradicate one in order to justify the other.

Dec.20 – Mercury retrograde square Uranus (26:46 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Dec.21 in AU)

Flashes of insight can show you new clarity but you might not like the answers you get, since they could disturb your logical perception of what's what. You might get some news or learn come information that shakes you up in some way. This isn't necessarily bad, since this may be necessary to open your mind to something you've been resisting. There's a Higher Truth here that wants to be told (by you or to you), but the way it's phrased can make a big difference in the reaction. There is a risk of "shooting off your mouth before your brains are loaded," as the saying goes, and impulsive or reckless communication and ideas could create more problems than they solve. It will probably help to listen inside yourself first to discover what you really need to say, and then figure out how to say it in a way that doesn't cause unnecessary damage. Strive to shine a light of truth without blinding anyone with it.

Dec.21 – Venus leaves the Shadow (13:13 of Scorpio)  ("What is the Shadow?"  Read more about Venus Retrograde.  Read more about the Shadow.)

Venus finally finishes her retrograde cycle by leaving the Shadow – the area of the zodiac where she was retrograde up until 4-5 weeks ago. Before that, Venus was retrograde for about 6 weeks, after spending 4-5 weeks in the pre-retrograde Shadow. The whole cycle lasts for about 3.5 months, and we are now at the end of this current cycle.

Look back on these time ranges and see if you can identify a pattern in your life. The pre-retrograde Shadow phase may have seen the development of issues, problems, challenges or changes in your desires and appetites in the areas of relationships, finances, resources or the need for balance. During the retrograde phase, you may have reconsidered and re-evaluated these areas, identified something you wanted to change, or perhaps allowed yourself to express feelings or desires that you normally keep locked away. You might have experienced either an increase or decrease in sex drive, desires, finances, social connection or romance during the retrograde phase and to some extent during the entire cycle.

The post-retrograde phase (which ends now) is the time when you make changes or choices based on what has emerged during the other two phases. Anything that increased and filled up the foreground of your attention may now recede into the background again, and things that seemed to hibernate or disappear may have begun to resume. We will not see the Venus Retrograde Shadow again for another 15-16 months.

Dec.21 – Mercury retrograde sextile Neptune (26:27 of Sagittarius/Aquarius)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit, with a little applied effort and focus. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) The possible disadvantage is that you might want so much to reach a state of inspired intuition, magical outlook and effortless communication, that you are willing to be deceived rather than fall short of what you are hoping for. Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

Sabian Symbol for Gemini 30: Bathing beauties.

Sabian Symbol for the
Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

Gemini 30

Bathing Beauties.

This Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") alludes to a scene that we might see on a beach with females parading their physical beauty for all to see.

In fact, Dane Rudhyar rephrased this symbol to specifically depict exactly that: "A parade of bathing beauties before large beach crowds." (An Astrological Mandala: The Cycle of Transformations and Its 360 Symbolic Phases)

Rudhyar sees this display of society's ideal standards as the final stage in the process of perfecting the manifestation of those ideals.

But that's not the end of the road; it's just the end of one phase. From there, a choice is required: what do you do with it? Where do you go from there?

In terms of our lunar eclipse, this symbol suggests that you're reaching a turning point in a longer process. You've gone as far as you can go in developing something that can now be expressed and understood as something valuable—but there is so much more that can be developed!

This transition degree shows that you are at a crossroads and must intuit what is to come next in your journey. Which direction feels right? You can rationalize it only so much, but ultimately you must choose with your heart, not your head.

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience GEMINI energy in your life.

This Lunar Eclipse is visible throughout North America and places in the Pacific, as well as limited visibility in South America, Australia and southeast Asia. It's okay to look directly at a lunar eclipse; it will not harm your eyes. (It's only a solar eclipse that you should avoid looking at directly.)

Was the last Solstice Eclipse really in 1638?

There are reports around the Internet that the last time we had a total lunar eclipse happen on the same calendar date as the December solstice was 1638. However, this is the case only if we calculate these events using UT (Universal Time or Greenwich Mean Time). If the time zone is adjusted by -7 hours (now called Central Standard Time in North America) or farther west, a total lunar eclipse occurred on the same date as the solstice was actually Dec.22 1703. And the last time any kind of lunar eclipse happened on the date of the solstice was Dec.21 1991 (a partial lunar eclipse, in that case). Suffice to say, it is a pretty rare event for a lunar eclipse to take place so close to the December solstice! Will the eclipse look any different because it's so close to the solstice? Nope! It will look just as beautiful as a total lunar eclipse always does. :-)

Solstice Eclipse

It's eclipse season again! Coming up twice a year, this is when the roller coaster takes you up that big hill and down the other side, leaving you wondering if you should go back and retrieve your lunch. We begin this set of eclipses with a Total Lunar Eclipse in Gemini and proceed to a Partial Solar Eclipse in Capricorn on Jan.04.2011.

A Lunar Eclipse is also a Full Moon, the difference being that the lunar eclipse is so precisely aligned that the Moon moves through the shadow cast by the Earth. Astrologically, this marks a time when you may be seeing the results of changes initiated at past solar eclipses. This eclipse also is aligned with the South Lunar Node—the place where we let go of something no longer needed, or it shifts from the foreground into the background to make room for other matters to become the focal point of our energy.

The Sun reaches the December Solstice on the same day. Here in the northern hemisphere, it is the Winter Solstice—the longest night of the year after which the daytime gradually grows longer. It is therefore celebrated as the "returning of the light." A lunar eclipse is the temporary darkening of the reflected light of the Full Moon, so the return of its light when the Moon emerges from the Earth's shadow seems to give special poetic and symbolic meaning to the northern winter solstice. If we take darkness to symbolize that which is hidden, dormant, unconscious or not yet formed, then this eclipse seems to illustrate the importance of gleaning from the darkness everything that you wish to bring to light.

In the southern hemisphere, it is the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year after which the night-time hours gradually increase. A lunar eclipse aligned with the summer solstice would seem to foreshadow the upcoming journey into darkness, providing a potential window into the hidden realms that you can explore or encounter over the next 6 months.

From Gemini to Cancer

This Full Moon occurs at 29° of Gemini, with the Sun at 29° of Sagittarius. The last time we had a 29° lunar eclipse at the solstice was December 1991. The focus is on how Gemini energy becomes Cancer energy in the archetypal evolution through the zodiac. This particular Full Moon is the third in a sequence of five that take place at 29°, which takes us through a gradual process of transition on several levels.

When Gemini morphs into Cancer, we go from cerebral to emotional, from the head to the heart and from information to intuition. In Gemini we focus on the gathering and sharing of information, whereas in Cancer we move into developing a feeling connection with those around us.

In Gemini, we're excited, aware and alert to what the world is telling us, how to articulate or express it, and ways to connect to our immediate environment. In Cancer, we become sensitive to how we feel about our environment. It's a more personal connection, in the sense that it reaches down into the gut level of our experience.

Whereas Gemini, being a Yang or masculine sign, relates to the world objectively—the world is an object to be observed, discussed and defined—Cancer, being a Yin or feminine sign, relates more subjectively and receptively—the world is something that we experience from within, are shaped by and have feelings about.

So what it is about our human experience that longs to leap from objective curiosity to intimate bonding? Or more to the point—what is it about your experience that generates the impulse to move from head to heart and from detachment to connection? This is your mission—to discover the part of you that has been in Gemini-mode and is becoming ready to move into Cancer-mode.

The final degree of any sign is about closure and transition. It's quite a leap to go from Gemini into Cancer because you're moving into a potentially vulnerable area of your psyche. The Gemini part of us is cheerful, fun loving and clever. The gift of gab will usually get you through most of the awkward moments you might encounter, and you can be light and detached (notice I did not say disconnected). You can skip like a stone across whatever social pond you happen to be puddling around in and it's all good.

Video of the December 21, 2010 Total Lunar Eclipse!

Good quality time-lapse video of the lunar eclipse!

Moving into Cancer means your gift of gab is likely to have a much deeper effect. Your words could hurt someone's feelings. Or, it might light up someone's affections and then you have to deal with them wanting to get closer to you (and have to figure out how you feel about that). The emotional bonding in Cancer means you can't simply be detached and live on the surface of your interactions with others, because those interactions have implications for everyone involved—including you. It's risky because the impact is felt at a very personal, gut level, which could be either pleasurable or painful. And often you don't know which it will be until you're already in it.

On the other hand, in Gemini we can go only so far in our longing to embrace the experience of life. The conscious mind is an amazing part of us, but it doesn't "get" human feelings, needs and intuition. Like in this video clip of the Star Trek android Data (a modern day Gemini archetype, if ever there was one), the logical mind can analyze, describe and define feelings but to experience them fully brings you into a whole new level of understanding.

Remember that saying, "you fake it 'til you make it?" To go from Gemini to Cancer is a similar process, in which you move from learning about something to embracing it as a part of who you are. Instead of your feet following the steps of the dance, you're now feeling the rhythm inside and can let your intuition guide you.

So where are you in this process? Where are you moving from learning to becoming? In what situation are you ready to probe deeper into your experience to connect with your personal or subconscious feelings? Perhaps you want to move from friendship toward a more intimate bond with someone special? Or maybe you've been gathering new awareness of yourself as an individual and are becoming ready to test this new autonomy in the context of your family over the holidays?

Remember that this is a process that doesn't happen overnight. And, in fact, this 29° Gemini Moon could be saying that it's important not to simply leap into the realm of feeling, bonding and personal connection. It's saying there's still some work to be done in Gemini before you're ready to commit fully to Cancer. We need to be able to trust and feel safe in Cancer, and Gemini can contribute a more detached and objective perspective which can be a valuable asset to avoid becoming engulfed in subjective feelings.

Mercury Retrograde, Pluto and Mars

So, if you find yourself encountering delays in what you want to accomplish, or if an opportunity seems to disappear, it could be that something else needs to happen first before it can work, or you might need to give the matter more thought before you're really sure if that's what you want. This is underscored by the fact that Mercury, ruler of the Lunar Eclipse, is currently retrograde, which tends to take the long way around things at the best of times.

Rolling conjunction: Mercury, Sun, Pluto, Mars; all opposite Moon

And yet, there's a lot of energy being aimed at that Moon right now! The Sun in opposition is in the middle of a wide "rolling conjunction" with Mercury, Pluto and Mars. Although Mercury and Mars are too far away to be conjunct on their own, the Sun and Pluto in between them bridge the gap and created this collective effect. This multiple conjunction is an extension of the Mercury-Mars-Pluto group that's been hovering in the skies since Dec.05.

So what have you been focusing on this month? Mercury, Mars and Pluto create a powerful combination! Communication and awareness join with anger, assertiveness and action, in the name of empowerment, ambition or deep rooted change. It could come out as "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" or you might encounter someone else who feels that way. Maybe you reach a point, after endless hesitation, where you finally decide to take the leap in the direction of some passionate ambition. Or, conversely, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by the energy and try to avoid it, possibly resulting in low energy, depression, lethargy or cynicism.

Whatever you've been doing with these energies this month, you're now challenged to focus this into a final awareness that you can start to apply to your life, especially in the realm of feelings and intuition, your need for belonging, and perhaps your relationship with your family in particular.

Have you been experiencing some of the "less inspiring" side of these energies? (depression, cynicism, low energy, seething resentment) It may help to use this as an opportunity to learn something about what triggers you into this state, what your reaction is when you feel this state of mind coming on and how you can experiment with different ways to push beyond the stuck point.

Out of Bounds Moon and Mars

Both the Moon and Mars are "out of bounds" at the time of the Full Moon. ("What does Out of Bounds mean?") This refers to declination which measures how far north or south of Earth's equator a planet is found. The Sun can be up to 23.44° (or 23°26') away from the equator. However, occasionally some planets move beyond this point, a condition known as being "out of bounds" or OOB. You could think of this as the planet's energy reaching beyond conventional limits to touch something more original, spontaneous, quirky or universal. Whether this is brave or brash is another question that must be answered by the person whose actions reflect this energy.

Mars being out of bounds (which it is from Nov.19-Dec.28) likely contributes an extra element of boldness. This could mean you find the pluck of courage you need to finally take the next step or take a stand and break free of hesitation, although it could also become erratic risk taking as well. Keep your intended destination clearly in focus to harness this burst of energy in the most productive and constructive way.

For the Moon to be slightly OOB during a lunar eclipse suggests the amplification of the eclipse's already lunatic edge. It means you could attain greater heights in whatever you are reaching for, although there is also the potential to become lost in the experience and lose the central thread of purpose.

It's very rare to have a total lunar eclipse where the Moon is technically out of bounds, since the Sun and Moon must be so closely aligned for there to be a total eclipse. We have to go back to December 1982 to find the last instance of this. (However, it is fascinating to note that the partial lunar eclipse of Jun.26.2010 also had an OOB Moon. That eclipse formed a Grand Cross with the Cardinal Cross planets on the same weekend as the G8/G20 Summit here in Toronto. The OOB Moon would have just added to the larger-than-life quality of those events, which are still continuing to unfold.)

The Moon is also the handle of the chart (meaning it's off by itself away from the other planets), so it becomes even more important to tune your awareness "out there" where you can tap into perceptions, ideas and visions far beyond what you might have anticipated. When you explore that Full Moon transition from Gemini to Cancer, you won't just be moving from logic to feeling, you'll be traversing a rainbow bridge between the Universal Mind and the Universal Heart. Cancer is the Moon's sign, so the gravity will be strong to pour yourself into Cancer's feeling state, but the actual eclipse is in Gemini, so there is a challenge to not lose touch with your conscious mind and objective thought. The trick is to open your mind to the full spectrum of possibilities while still keeping at least one foot touching the ground.

This is an important eclipse on several levels. If the Moon aspects any planets or points in your natal chart, you are more likely to feel its effects on a personal level. Whether it feels like it's turning your world upside down or launching you like a rocket into new realms, this lunar eclipse brings a rare opportunity to reach beyond your usual understanding. "What is the Solstice?"

Happy Solar Return to all Capricorns! And Happy Solstice and Happy Yule to all of us! When the Sun enters Capricorn each year, it marks the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere (longest night) and the Summer Solstice in the southern hemisphere (longest day). Yule is the traditional celebration of the December solstice in European-derived cultures, welcoming the start of the increasing light. While the Sun is in Capricorn, we have the opportunity to explore our connection to the earth (Capricorn being an Earth sign) in a physical way. Whether you are bundling up to survive a cold winter, or unwinding after the summer heat, or getting down to business as the landscape blooms in "downunder" summer splendour, there is something very manifest and substantial about the experience of Capricorn. This energy calls on us to get real in whatever we are doing – to bring structure, responsibility and discipline to whatever we do. It is a time to work on our "containment." Not in the sense of suppression, but in terms of defining the boundaries within which our growth can flourish down the road, and keeping our impulses from inconveniently spilling over the edges of those boundaries. Sometimes that means cutting back in certain areas in order to focus your energy and make room for new growth. Sometimes it means having to delay gratification and reward until you reach a certain point of progress. The Capricorn rule of thumb is: if you do whatever is necessary, the rewards will come.

Dec.21 – Mercury retrograde square Jupiter (25:20 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Dec.22 in UK, AU)

You may be seeing the weak links in your knowledge, understanding or beliefs right now. Your ideas and words might seem to fall short of what your mind envisions, or you might be unable to convince others of your point of view. As a result, it can be tempting to over-compensate with more self-confidence, faith or optimism than you actually have. Or, you might give out "too much information" by over-explaining or through nervous rambling. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else who does this and perhaps have a blaming or judgmental reaction to them. This is an opportunity to learn something about how you might jump to conclusions or blame, possibly triggered by a situation that challenges your beliefs, opinions or perspective. To learn more about this part of yourself, try taking some time to think about what is really bothering you or what you really need to say in that situation. There may be a higher truth to be found if you open your mind to something you're reluctant to acknowledge, rather than looking for a "final truth" around which to close it.

Dec.26 – Sun conjunct Pluto (05:09 of Capricorn)  (Dec.27 in UK, AU)

Your sense of purpose is potentially very strong right now, as you are able to tap into a deeper level of energy and determination. Your personality is likely to be more forceful now, which can be great if you need to make a strong impression but perhaps not so great in situations requiring delicacy, subtlety or diplomacy. You have increased ability to see below the surface of things, although it may not be as easy to articulate it in a way that is received comfortably by others. What you pick up from others can also become mixed up with your own personal issues, making it hard to tell where one stops and the other begins. Paranoia and suspicion can be strong. It is possible to unearth secrets or get at the core of unconscious patterns (yours and others'), but it is important to be prudent in how you respond to this awareness. You have the ability to wound as well as heal right now, so probe into the depths (yours and others') as you would into an egg shell that you don't want to break – gently, mindfully and respectfully.

Dec.29 – Mars square Saturn (16:33 of Capricorn/Libra)  (Dec.30 in AU)

The impulsive forward action of Mars meets the serious structure of Saturn. The resulting friction can often generate considerable heat in the form of frustration, argument, conflict and stress – but also productivity and results for hard work. Your efforts may seem thwarted and your actions blocked at every turn. Your sensitivity to problems with authority figures can be especially high, as well as your sensitivity to others not cooperating with your own role as an authority figure. The youthful, free spirit in you is somehow required to deal with the serious, responsible, cautious side of you, and a power struggle between the two energies can easily result. If one side wins out over the other, either depression and guilt or rebellion and obsession may result. However, you are not without power or ability! This friction can also be put to use in very productive ways. Your energy, desire and goals can be made manifest and concrete – even if possibly forced by circumstance. Obstacles can strengthen us, if we work with them instead of just fighting against them. To minimise interpersonal problems, remember that assertiveness is important, but aggression or rigidity will usually only get the other person's back up. You may find yourself in a situation where you must defend or assert your personal boundaries. Or, you might find it difficult to comply with someone else's boundaries. If the heat from this transit starts to overwhelm you, take some time out, find a safe (perhaps creative?) outlet to vent your feelings, and then find a new way to approach the problem.

Dec.30 – Mercury stationary Direct (19:37 of Sagittarius)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or simply changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde for the last 3 to 3½ weeks, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. This period has challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again.

Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow, your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.

Jan.01.2011 – Happy New Year!

Today is 1-1-11! One is the number of new beginnings, initiative, birth and the source from which all else springs. May 2011 be a year that brings fresh beginnings and new hope to your life.

Jan.04 – Venus square Neptune (12:49 of Scorpio/Aquarius)

Money, material resources, relationships and pleasure could be subject to confusion, deception, or unrealistic wishful thinking under this transit. It may seem that what you thought you had (love, friendship, pleasure, money, resources) has suddenly disappeared or isn't as dependable as you thought it was. You might feel disappointed, disillusioned, sad or alone, but this is more likely to be a passing phase than a serious crisis. The question is: what are your secret longings and subtle desires that may be operating unconsciously? These could be clouding your ability to relate to people and situations in your life. Old addictions, depression or idealism may surface as way of dealing with feelings. A better outlet would be to channel your feelings and experiences into creativity, beauty, inspiration and compassion; for example, art, music or helping others.
