You can get to a state of balance from many roads, but the one place they all lead is to centre of gravity. The process of creating balance and harmony is to find that balance point.

Balance and harmony are the qualities Libra aspires to. Whether that happens in relationships or art or negotiations or one's perspective or whatever – inevitably it's all about balance and harmony. So...what do those terms mean?

Balance or equilibrium can be achieved in many different ways, typically through even distribution of the components. It is "a state of balance between opposing forces or actions that is either static ... or dynamic." (Merriam-Webster.com)

The core idea, for our purposes, is that a perfect state of balance contains an offset against any forces that would throw off the equilibrium. Action and reaction. This for that.

balancing rocks

For example: too much "weight" on one side can be counterbalanced by adding more weight on the other side or by decreasing the excess on the heavier side. Or, you could move the centre of gravity on which the two are poised.

Equilibrium is always pushing against something. There's a healthy friction, tension or conflict between the two sides, and balance can be maintained as long as both sides are equal or equivalent. The counterbalancing force needs to match the opposing force in some way.

People born with a lot of Libra in their chart tend to be a "people person" – they depend and thrive on interaction with others. It's part of how they maintain their inner balance – there's usually someone or some situation on the outside that serves to counterbalance whatever is on the inside. It's like they're on one end of a see-saw and there needs to be something on the other end to be the counterbalance.

Potential for polarization abounds in this kind of dynamic! In order for the one side to resist the pull to join forces with its opposing side, a common way to do that is to separate itself more completely from the opposing side. In other words: I'll make sure I'm whatever you are not, and I'll also make sure that I am not whatever you are. Mutually exclusive.

The problem is that the more one side reacts by distancing itself, the more this escalates the need for rebalancing on the other side. And the farther from the centre one side becomes, the farther the other side must go to counterbalance it. If you think Aries can be reactive, try Libra when they're trying desperately to prove they're not whatever they see outside of themselves!

That's the trap with Libra. When you look at the other guy, are you looking at a reflection of something you are, or a reflection of something you're not (or are trying not to be)? At a certain point, these opposite extremes come full circle and you can't tell which side is which. "We have met the enemy and he is us." (Pogo)

balancing rocks

In an archetypal sense, this shows how Libra is actually the root of the Shadow concept (which is more often associated with Scorpio, the next sign in the zodiac sequence). The Shadow contains qualities that are hidden within ourselves, yet we judge them as wrong or bad or undesirable in others.

The more we try to distance ourselves from our adversary, the more we try to eradicate any resemblance of the opposing side in ourselves, the more we reject everything about the other guy in an effort to be better than they—the more we risk becoming "the pot that calls the kettle black," as the saying goes.

So, when we see something we disapprove of in the other guy, we may be projecting something that is actually inside of us onto them. To seal the deal, we deny any resemblance of the same quality inside of us because that would mean we are like them. Polarization only (seems to) work if we can cast aspersions on our adversary, while ensuring that we are squeaky clean from having the same imperfections.

This is where polarization can backfire. Once we believe we distance ourselves from the qualities that we condemn in others, we step into a trap where we cannot be all of who we are, lest we lose our "righteous" position of denouncing the other guy.

Here's the trap: the more we must disown about ourselves in order to be "not-them," the more we ironically become defined by that which we are trying not to be. As we try to be free from our adversary's qualities, we actually become shackled and imprisoned by the very thing we are trying to escape. This is the sinner hidden within the saint; the secret vulnerability within the powerful; the Yin within the Yang.

balancing rocks

This is the flip side of the Libra archetype. We tend to associate Libra with things beautiful and positive, and Libra can definitely have those qualities; but it's not all daisies and cute puppies.

The Libra archetype shows how hypocrisy can be born—not necessarily through wilful denial, but by gradually blanking out self-awareness of our own negative qualities that we see and scorn in others.

Opposites are not easy to reconcile. If you take the extreme versions of two opposites, it seems impossible to see how one reflects the other or how they're connected (other than each being everything the other is not).

Colour Wheel showing opposite colours

Colour demonstrates this very well. What do opposite colours have in common? (Black-white, red-green, blue-orange, purple-yellow, etc.) In their purest form, they are mutually exclusive. Whereas orange contains both red and yellow, blue is utterly absent. When you mix blue with orange, you get a muddy brown – it contaminates both the orange and the blue.

This is the danger of polarized extremes – you lose the ability to find common ground in any meaningful way. And without common ground, there is no way to resolve the differences without both sides sacrificing everything they hold dear. You might create a fragile peace based on strict rules of what can and can't be done, but that's not resolution; that's harm reduction.

How to find a healthy, workable balance? Libra's answer is compromise. Each side must agree to coexist with the other. Each side must allow something of the other side to become part of its territory. Each side both sacrifices something and retains something.

And ultimately, if the peace is to last, each side must come to recognize something about the other side within themselves. In other words, deep healing involves taking back some of that projected venom and identifying it in oneself.

At the end of the day, we have all sides within us. Each of us has the capacity to be both a sinner and a saint; both powerful and powerless. But neither side is all good or all bad, all right or all wrong. Everyone has their reasons for behaving as they do. The person you see as your adversary isn't necessarily doing what they do just to piss you off. To them it probably makes sense – you just don't see their logic.

Examples: do you see yourself as a strong, assertive person, while disdaining those who don't stand up for themselves? Perhaps your assertiveness has been developed so that you don't have to see your more vulnerable side. Do you see yourself as someone who would rather go along with others when there is a conflict, rather than stand up and say no? Perhaps it feels too risky to contradict others, fearing that you will lose what you already have. Or, maybe you believe that peace is the only way to avoid battle, so you try your best to keep things from deteriorating into deeper conflict.

Everyone has a reason for what they do, for the choices they make and for the way they resolve conflict. It may or may not be the best choice they can make, but this is what prioritizing is all about. It comes down to what is most important to you in that moment. The question you have to ask yourself at some point is: do I choose this path because it truly feels like the best choice, or because I'm afraid of what the other road might bring?

Making decisions based on fear isn't always a bad thing either – the important point here is to own both the reasons you choose something...and the reasons you decide not to choose something else. By owning both sides of your position, you can avoid polarization and projection.

balancing rocks

Do you defend "your side" because you have considered both sides fairly, honestly and impartially, or because you can't bring yourself to see anything positive in the "other side?" Maybe you're missing something. Maybe there's something in the other side that is worth exploring. It can be important to reclaim the qualities you dislike about the other side, which you've been unwilling to see in yourself. This allows you to become more whole and reclaim more of who you are. If that sounds scary, ask yourself this: is your faith or trust in your own perspective so fragile that it can't withstand new ideas or dissenting views? Then how strong is your own viewpoint?

These are ideas to challenge yourself with. To question is to be open to seeing something new that could bring you new strength, new insight, new options, new growth. It is to look with fresh eyes at what you have taken for granted, and in so doing broaden your understanding of All That Is.

This kind of work takes time. It's a process, not an event. This New Moon in Libra is a great time to start on or take another step in that unfolding process of healing. There are no opposition aspects between planets in this New Moon chart, and yet it takes place in the sign that embodies the very nature of the opposition. That means you have the potential to explore that opposition nature without necessarily getting trapped in the either-or, black-or-white, all-or-nothing, you-versus-me dichotomy.

The New Moon in Libra brings us to this territory of projection, balance and choices. Interestingly, the Sun-Moon conjunction (which is the New Moon) is rather weakly aspected to the rest of the chart. Its closest major aspects are a somewhat wide, separating trine to Jupiter (6:21 orb) and a wide, approaching but out-of-sign conjunction to Saturn (8:36). There is also a semi-square to Mars (1:34) and a sesquiquadrate to Chiron (2:07). (45° and 135° respectively)

The separating trine to Jupiter speaks of support and insight from previous learning and exploration of ideas. Use the philosophical perspective you already have to see your current situations in a new way. Trust that, even if the road ahead looks like a long uphill climb, you have already gathered some wisdom, perspective, expansion of resources and ideas that can help fuel your journey.

The conjunction to Saturn is the big one to watch out for (the Sun reaches Saturn on Oct.25). This upcoming transit speaks of the need to be crystal clear about what you are actually up against in anyone you see as "the enemy." You may need to take a stand, and you would probably prefer not to get caught dealing a double standard, or accusing the other side of something that you have the potential for, yourself, right?

Saturn has a way of sometimes stripping the veneer off any Shadow denial—and you wouldn't want to get caught with your Shadow down! It will be helpful to start being honest with yourself now about anything that's been hiding just outside your mental peripheral vision, and (depending on the situation) perhaps also being honest with the world around you.

The most positive side of this transit is manifestation. This lunar cycle can be when you start a new project or finish an existing one, or perhaps begin to put your plans into action. This can be an exciting time for artists, negotiators, partnerships of all kinds. Pay attention to the intuition and inspiration you get around the New Moon, as these thoughts and observations could be giving you important building blocks. Whether they say "go this way" or "don't go that way," there is a gift for you.

Planet Venus

Venus, the planetary ruler of Libra, is in a very tight sextile with Mercury. This makes for some lovely flow between the head and the heart. Ideas that see the best in something. Communication that is kind, gentle or cooperative. Interactions that are meaningfully informative.

However, Venus is in Fall in Virgo, meaning that it will be much harder for her to be as freely genteel, elegant or accommodating as she might normally be. The Virgo side of her has a very particular idea of what the best compromise will look like. Art, beauty, pleasure and interactions need to be perfect down to the last detail, and any digression from that vision is likely to take away from the experience for her.

Venus is also square to Jupiter, which suggests that it might be a little too easy to indulge too much in a good thing. They could conflict where Jupiter (in Gemini) would rather amass large quantities of indiscriminate information and ideas (to have lots to choose from), while Venus (in Virgo) prefers to focus in on fewer things that are or can be honed to be high quality. Just be careful not to sharpen your expectations and standards to such a fine point that you poke holes in the very thing you're aiming for.

The South Node is also conjunct the fixed star Algol right now (more about that below). At the precise moment of the New Moon, it is one mere minute of arc from being exact. And the South Node is in Taurus, the other sign ruled by Venus.

This can be quite a volatile and intense yet potentially healing energy. During transformation, things typically feel worse before they get better. Similar to detoxing your body, it pulls the dysfunctional energy to the surface before it is flushed away, so the negative seems closer, bigger and badder. It seems like things are getting worse for a while, but as long as you keep moving through the process it can be a very healing experience.

The US Presidential election is acting as a primary lightning rod for this energy. The US is so severely divided, I think it's fair to say that regardless who wins the election, there will be a large population of people who feel like they've just been zapped by the deadly Algol. Additionally, the weeks before the election are filled with anxiety and tension from the passionate views and issues being debated. As a result, the Libran New Moon with its potential for division, projection and escalating polarization makes it pretty difficult—yet even more important—to find a balance point between the extremes that will be acceptable to both sides.

During this time, every individual capable of maintaining their personal sense of balance and strength amid the erratic extremes will no doubt be a valuable resource to help stabilize a very volatile situation. Being detached, without disconnecting from one's humanity and place within the Collective, will be a constructive asset. Having the strength and courage to be open to all perspectives, and seeing some value in each of them, will help to breathe fresh air into the largely deadlocked cultural environment.

balancing rocks

It will help to have a sense of your own values, priorities, beliefs and opinions is also important, but also vital to resist the urge to vilify those with whom you disagree. Libra works better when it can find that balance point without resorting to polarized extremes. Anger, frustration and urgency are inevitable emotions during this time – these feelings are not bad, but how we handle them, express them, own them and understand them can make a huge difference in what we each contribute to the whole.

Libra's message is to aim for balance and equilibrium within yourself. No matter what is unravelling in the outside world around you, strive to counterbalance it with a stable centre that brings you back to who you are, independent of external events. Rediscover your peace, again and again in new ways, as each day brings new challenges.

Oct.15 – South Lunar Node conjunct Fixed Star Algol (26:21 of Taurus)  (Oct.16 in AU)

The South Node is conjunct the fixed star Algol. Using the True Node (with its slight retrograde-direct-retrograde wobble), it makes not just one but three passes: Oct.15, Oct.20 and Oct.23. There's more: the True South Node remains within 1 degree of Algol (currently at 26:21 of Taurus) from Sep.28 until Dec.28. That's a LONG time for the Node to be so stationary. And the South Node stays within a partile conjunction (same degree) from Sep.30 until Dec.01. There's no escaping this one during October and November!

So this is very likely to be imprinted on the current Libra lunar cycle. Additionally, the South Node will still be closely aligned with Algol in November for both the Solar (Nov.13) and Lunar (Nov.28) Eclipses. This energy has an important role on the world stage for a while.

What does it all mean? Let's start with the South Node, which is one end of the Lunar Node axis (the other end being the North Node). Whereas the North Node is a place where we grow and move toward fulfilling our destiny, the South Node is the place where we stay "safely" (or so it feels) with what is familiar. If we are progressing in the direction of our growth, then the South Node is the place where we let go of the past. We push away from where we have been, moving toward where we will be.

I don't believe the South Node necessarily represents bad things (as traditional views often say about it). I see it as the place where we take that which has been our focus and move it into the background. We assimilate what was into the backdrop of our lives, so that it is no longer in the foreground. This leaves room for something else to move into that foreground via the North Node.

Medusa

Algol is a star that has been regarded with dread by many cultures across our planet for a very long time. Writes Bernadette Brady: "All writers agree that this is the most malefic star in the heavens and causes hangings, death by the loss of one's head, and any other foul, demonic deed that could befall the human race." Algol has been also been associated with mythologies about the Dark Feminine and the female energy that will not be subservient, compliant or repressed, from the Jewish Lilith to the Greek Medusa. So you can imagine how this went over with the dominant Patriarchy of the times!

For the South Node to hover in alignment with Algol for so long suggests a couple of months of shedding old energies associated with Dark Feminine energy. Anyone who has done a detoxing regimen will tell you that at first it feels pretty awful. All those toxins being released float around in your system for a while before finally being flushed out.

You need two components for a successful detoxing process – there must be some mechanism by which the toxin is loosened and released from its current state, and there must be another mechanism that takes that sludge and flushes it out of the system. When releasing any kind of dysfunctional energy, it typically (seems to) get worse before it gets better. However, as long as you keep moving through the process, it can be a very healing experience.

So the Dark Feminine (which gets all the derogatory bad press) might appear as vicious, engulfing, menacing or noxious for a while. The Light(weight) Feminine (which gets all the idealized good press) might be held up as the only "good" kind of female energy. In areas of the Middle East we see this in the actions of radical Muslim groups that are using deadly force and terrorizing tactics to intimidate girls away from being educated. In the US, this seems to be reflected by the extreme attitudes and claims being expressed by some political figures to support an ultra-conservative view of women, rape, abortion and birth control. Many even feel there is a "war on women" taking place in the US right now.

A side note about the example of abortion: in the bigger picture, this South Node and Algol dynamic is about the debate over whether abortion is an option available to women, not specifically about whether abortion is right or wrong. Regardless of your personal moral views about abortion, this current energy is about what justifications are used to grant or deny the choices women will have, not necessarily about striving to establish one or the other perspective as the correct one. The whole debate about abortion will continue to be with us, by the very nature of the issues involved.

It's easy and tempting to believe the heavens are there as a cheerleading team for the political or moral "side" one believes is best. However, I think that life and the Universe are much larger than that. Much of the lesson of the human species is to wrestle with the Big Questions about life, from abortion to religious beliefs to cultural conflicts to ecological consequences and more. Algol isn't about easy answers. It can, however, be the bringer of extreme consequences, as well as profound revelation and the challenge to examine and accept our deeper nature that resides below what we accept as "normal" and "comfortable."

Keep your eyes on the prize: strive to become lighter yet deeper, healthier, more whole and more authentic by peering into the abyss of the unknown about human nature.

Oct.16 – Mercury Direct sextile Venus (15:34 of Scorpio/Virgo)

There is a potential to benefit from social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness during this transit, although a certain amount of effort is needed to make this happen. It can be a good time for negotiating contracts and other agreements, especially if you consciously focus your intent on achieving balance with your counterpart, partner or opponent that results in a win-win situation for all concerned. There is also potential to appreciate and express beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone in your life that you want to get closer to, try speaking gently and listening receptively, which can be the key that opens the door to harmonious interaction. Creative ideas can also find expression now if you apply your conscious awareness to bring them into focus. The thing to watch for is a tendency to use manipulation to achieve an advantage, which might be done by you or to you. Keep communication straightforward and clear, and find diplomatic ways to deal with manipulation if you sense it happening.

Oct.16 – Venus square Jupiter (16:07 of Virgo/Gemini)  (Oct.17 in UK, AU)

"Your eyes are bigger than your stomach" (as Mom used to say). That means you are more likely now to over-indulge, especially in the areas of relationships, spending, desires, pleasure and social contact. Your desire for fulfilment and satisfaction may exceed your resources, and you might not even realise it until the bill comes in later (probably under a Saturn transit ;-). You may also find you require more knowledge, understanding, faith, freedom or optimism than you have available, making it tempting to compensate by inflating what you really have. For example, you might want to resort to flattery, manipulation or over-optimism in an effort to make up for a lack of genuine confidence, rapport or preparation. However, this can also be a time when your creativity is running high and you are able to pull rabbits out of your hat on a moment's notice. The problem is that you could over-extend yourself by doing so.

Oct.19 – Mercury enters the Retrograde Shadow  ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury is now "in the Shadow" – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde in about 2½ weeks time. During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through the same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more extensive process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences—ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected. This includes not just talking, but also email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods. The situations developing over the next couple of weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, to plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. Patience is a valuable quality during this time. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes—or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct.

Oct.22 – Sun enters Scorpio (until Nov.21)  (Oct.23 in UK, AU)

Happy Solar Return to all Scorpios! While the Sun is in Scorpio, we all get to explore our passions and probe the secrets within our depths. There is an intensity to the Scorpio experience that goes right to the core, and Scorpio challenges you to take a closer look at how that intensity manifests in your psyche. What are you passionate about and what fires up that passion? What events and experiences have brought you to "rock bottom" and then turned the tide to rejuvenate you back to a new lease on life? What people, causes, beliefs or physical things are so important to you that you would even risk death for? What secrets do you harbour inside, even from yourself? Posing these hypothetical questions doesn't mean you'll bring it on! But doing so can help you tap into the Scorpio experience to understand better how you experience transformation and touch the deepest heart of life itself. The danger is in becoming so obsessed with your passion that you neglect the practical realities. Or, you could become stuck in the "dark side" of transformation and letting go of the old, that you forget that figurative death and transformation are meant to lead into rebirth in order to complete the cycle. During this time, celebrate the endings in your life. Honour the hard times when you have had to face painful losses. And take passionate pleasure in the things that pull you out of your routines and make you feel alive. In some way, they have all allowed you to survive, thrive and grow.

Oct.23 – Sun trine Neptune (00:27 of Scorpio/Pisces)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Oct.25 – Sun conjunct Saturn (02:20 of Scorpio)

For a few days before and after this date, you may feel serious, studious, stuck, blocked, committed and/or hard working. It could be a good time to manifest well prepared plans, or you might have to get real and deal with difficult realities in new ways. You may have business with authority figures, or you might be called upon to act in a leadership role. It can also be a time to own your own authority – that is, to BE the authority figure, either to someone else or just to yourself. It might be a time of decision, when you have to choose one path or option over another. This can feel like an ending, as much as it is a new beginning, because selecting one possibility means you must let go of the other possibilities (at least for now). This is a necessary part of the process of manifestation and maturity. Doing closure on the people and situations that are passing out of your life will help to complete the process of growth and learning they have brought into your life, and can help clear the space for something new to begin growing in their place.

Oct.25 – Mercury conjunct North Lunar Node (26:16 of Scorpio)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Ideas are in focus, especially when they're shared with others. It could be a time when you observe or notice something new, giving you a new perspective that you will mull over for the coming several months. Or you might be called upon to give a talk or presentation that shares information with others. It might be an especially active time with emails, Facebook, Twitter or texting. Communication and collection of thoughts and ideas is the central theme here. Keep your eyes, mind and curiosity open – the world could be showing you something important and fascinating!

Oct.25 – Mercury Retrograde sextile Venus (26:35 of Scorpio/Virgo)

Oct.27 – Sun trine Chiron (05:08 of Scorpio/Pisces)  (Oct.28 in UK, AU)

This is a time when you may find that your recent efforts to mend and heal the chronic struggles in your life start to come together. You likely have the confidence now to try new solutions, or at least to approach problems from a different angle that sheds new light on the situation. Some of this progress may come from daring to walk your own path, or from finding the courage to face the hidden shadow of your worries and weaknesses (the hidden benefit that those worries give you). There may be a variety of different struggles and wounds in your life that could benefit from this kind of healing, although it can be tempting to let this transit pass by without taking advantage of it. Strive to reach a midpoint between merely dipping your toe in troubled waters and thinking that is enough, versus jumping in the deep end and marinating in it.

Oct.28 – Mars opposite Jupiter (15:25 of Sagittarius/Gemini)

Both inspired action and brash overconfidence characterise this transit. For up to a week before and after this date, you may find that your energy, anger, libido and ability to take action are amplified – so much so, that you may be pushing yourself beyond what is realistic or unable to deal with reasonable boundaries to prevent them from getting out of control. What is needed is to find that fine line of balance between ego-based desire and spiritual inspiration; between will power and focused faith; and between righteous anger and arrogant pride. Strive to bring both your ego's desires and your spiritual aspirations into what you do, for each has its own validity and won't operate well without the other.

Oct.28 – Venus enters Libra (until Dec.15)  (Oct.29 in AU)

Venus glides like a graceful model through her own sign of Libra, giving you the opportunity to expand your interactive style, cultivate diplomacy, beautify your surroundings, schmooze with social connections, and discover a new fashion statement. Find something beautiful, balanced or harmonious to appreciate or do during this time. You might consider visiting an art gallery, or watch a romantic movie, or listen to music that moves you into a peaceful place inside. You might feel drawn to going shopping for beautiful clothes or items to decorate your home. It can also be a good time to negotiate agreements with people, in a way that is fair and is focused on a win-win solution. Do something to celebrate, express and discover your inner and/or outer beauty. Find new ways to balance your own interests with those of others, which generates good will and harmony.

Oct.29 – Mercury enters Sagittarius (until Nov.14)

Communication, ideas, thoughts and perceptual "spark" become expanded in Sagittarius. Your mental focus tends toward a philosophical and spiritual outlook that seeks the highest truth in the broadest context. However, it's not always easy for the conscious mind to assimilate and digest such a vast territory of knowledge, or to find the higher meaning in mountains of raw information. You might feel a bit overwhelmed by trying to take in such a panoramic view of your world, but the gifts from doing so are abundant and inspiring! To get the most out of this transit, try learning something new that expands your horizon. Or pick a situation in your life and imagine that you're looking at it from a mountaintop – what do you see from way up there that you can't see when you're closer to the ground? Just remember that whatever visions and insights you get from doing this, these are SOME of the truths to be found, but not necessarily the only truth. Leave room in your new understanding to remember that every mountaintop shows a slightly different view and that this doesn't make one mountain right and the others wrong.

Oct.29 – Mercury square Neptune (00:24 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Oct.30 in AU)

Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.

In the last episode, the New Moon in Libra, we talked about balance, projection and polarization. Having the subsequent Full Moon in Taurus brings an interesting outcome to the energy begun in Libra.

Taurus is not opposite Libra, but rather is generally in a quincunx relationship. Quincunx energy is where the two planets are almost opposite but off one sign – each 5 signs away from each other – and each just out of focus to the other.

Planets in quincunx aspect to each other can't see each other directly. It's like they can only see the other through their peripheral vision. Think of a tiny insect that you can detect by its motion, flickering at the edge of your vision but as soon as you turn your head, you can't find it.

Another example is when you think you see someone out of the corner of your eye, but when you turn your head, there's no one there. Many people believe these experiences are glimpses of spirits of the dead, which they sense but aren't quite sensitive enough to see them straight on. This is a pretty good description of the quincunx relationship – you figure there's something there, but you're only seeing a blurry glimpse at best.

The best way to see something clearly that's in your peripheral vision is to keep your sight steady facing forward and then relax your eyes so that you're taking in your whole field of vision. Trying to focus on one thing usually messes up your ability to see the whole panoramic view.

Seeing one particular thing in that broad view requires a certain amount of faith, and an acceptance that although you'll get to see it in general, you probably won't be able to pick out a lot of details. You make yourself open so that it comes to you, rather than you chasing after it – kind of a Venus thing rather than a Mars thing.

Similarly, getting two quincunx planets to talk to each other requires a lot of faith and patience, relaxing their expectations of how much they'll understand about the other, and an open-minded flexibility that allows them to see each other in a different way. They have to relate "outside the box."

Part of this difficulty lies in the mutually exclusive nature of the two signs. They share nothing in common. They don't have the same or even compatible elements (Earth or Water to Air or Fire). They don't share the same modality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable – which would generate stress, as in the square aspect, but even conflict is a way of relating). And they don't have the same polarity either (male/positive/Yang versus female/negative/Yin).

It's like two people who come from different places, speak totally different languages, come from different cultures with different social cues; even their body language is different. Now lock them in a room and tell them to solve a problem. They'll have to be extremely open-minded and probably have to invent a whole new way of communicating. It's very creative, but comes with enormous struggle where nothing can be taken for granted.

The good news, however, is that there is common ground that can be found between two signs in quincunx aspect to each other – it's just not a direct overlap.

Taurus and Libra

In the case of Libra and Taurus, when Libra's quest for balance is met, it brings stability that allows the Taurus progress to be made. However, when you have to keep correcting a situation that falls out of balance then a lot of your Taurus resources become wasted. When the Libran balance is stable, then Taurus can motor along in a nice rhythm without being distracted by having to stop to adjust the balance all the time. Libra is happy and Taurus is happy. Each can benefit from the other, even though they have mutually exclusive agendas and priorities.

Another way of looking at this is that they're both ruled by Venus, which means Venus becomes the middle common ground that bridges the gap. The Taurus side of Venus is about pleasure, creature comforts, resources, abundance and luxury. The Libra side of Venus is about harmony, balance, beauty, love and interaction.

Venus at the Full Moon in Taurus

Where is the middle ground? Pleasure and love. Abundance and harmony. Luxury and beauty. Stability through Libran balance and harmony means there can be continuity and stability in pleasure and resources. And vice versa: lack of well-being (essential resources, pleasure) can make you feel very out of step (harmony, balance) with the rest of the world. If your Taurus assets never feel like enough, then you're likely to be constantly chasing after a sense of balance, striving to find that equilibrium. And if your Libra social connections are out of whack, it may be difficult to tap into that Taurus sense of pleasure and contentment.

In a chart with strong Libra/Taurus connections, whatever Venus is doing in the chart will have a lot of influence over how that quincunx is felt and how easily the gap can be bridged. In the chart of the Full Moon in Taurus, Venus is a busy girl! She's got a lot to say, through her sextile (60°) to Mercury, which came into orb around Sep.28 and remains until around Nov.05. The sextile is exact on Oct.16, and then again on Oct.25 when Mercury slows down for the upcoming retrograde and Venus overtakes him.

However Venus is operating in your chart, you may have a lot of observations, feelings and intuitive impressions about things during that time. In the context of the current Taurus/Libra quincunx energy, it's an excellent time to relax and observe the world around you and allow yourself to see things from a different perspective or a more subtle aspect of these events and situations.

Venus is currently strong in Libra (her own sign), so the key to tapping into this subtle energy is to find a meditative sense of balance and just watch. Mercury in Sagittarius might be eager to judge what you observe as good or bad, but you'll get more from it if you aim to simply "notice and allow" – strive to assess and understand, rather than to judge, dictate or assign blame.

Venus is also coming up to form a T-square with the Uranus-Pluto square, in effect from Oct.29 to Nov.08 (more about this below). This alignment brings to the Full Moon energy the need to find contentment and balance in the face of some pretty volatile and erratic energy! With Venus dancing with this heavy transpersonal energy, whatever contentment, balance and pleasure you can find will need to be understood to some extent in a context of the bigger picture – the tumultuous collective flow that currently resembles sudsy, wild white water. It is here that the Venus-in-Libra balance is so important!

Quincunxes at the Full Moon

And speaking on quincunxes (in the Libra-Taurus lunar cycle), there are two quincunx aspects in the Full Moon chart worth noting. The Uranus is quincunx to the Sun (Aries/Scorpio). Also, Venus is quincunx to Neptune (Libra/Pisces). In general, this underscores the vague, slippery quincunx energy that requires you to polish up your flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity. Your ability to be flexible can help you dance with Uranus' surprises, as he rebels against being trapped in a nice predictable box. Tolerance for ambiguity is essential for the quincunx to Neptune, since that wiggling in your peripheral vision could bring new healing inspiration, but it could just as easily be a speck of wishful dust in your subjective eye. Time will tell. Taurus' calm, patience and groundedness will be a valuable resource that keeps you from leaping into an illusion.

There are many other noteworthy configurations in the Taurus New Moon chart. Probably the most noteworthy is that Saturn is conjunct the Sun end of the Sun-Moon opposition. Saturn in Scorpio can be a demanding, no-nonsense task master who knows what's best. Resistance is futile!

This version of Saturn can make life miserable if you try to avoid, dismiss or escape from what's in your best interest. It's all about the consequences that come from your choices and actions, and when it's in Scorpio it's definitely better to be squeaky clean about what you know is best for you. Like everything else, though, Saturn in Scorpio is a process of learning and evolving, not a one-time pass-or-fail event.

The Sun-Saturn conjunction is already past exact (Oct.25). That means you're dealing with the consequences of decisions and actions that have already occurred in the past week or so. In a way that's good because it means it can only get better from here, since you can observe and learn from the experience and how you would change things when you encounter this energy again (when the Sun makes a dynamic aspect to Saturn: conjunction, opposition or square).

On the other hand, this separating conjunction between the Sun and Saturn at the Full Moon can be difficult because just as the Moon in Taurus and Venus in Libra are ready for some serious contentment, relaxation and enjoyment, there are consequences and results of the conjunction that must be dealt with.

It's not that the Saturn energy will always be negative or uncomfortable: on the contrary. These energies create a nexus of manifestation that is rooted in your sense of who you are, your well-being and overall vitality. It can be a great time to launch a new project, put a plan into action, start to sculpt a new plan toward a challenging goal, etc. However, it can also point out—with a rather heavy finger—the things in your life that are getting in your way. Anything that's broken or obsolete, or needs to be fixed, renovated or replaced is fair game when Saturn encounters it. However, whether the experience is good, bad or indifferent, hard work and conscious effort are almost always involved. So keep those sleeves rolled up!

Cradle aspect pattern

Finally: Pluto and Chiron both form the apex of two Wedge aspect patterns with the Sun-Moon opposition (and Saturn as well). In your effort to deal with the stress, struggle and polarity of the Scorpio/Taurus opposition, each apex planet offers a solution which can be creative and healing, or distracting and evasive, or both. Pluto says: "Dig deep and be authentic from the inside out," but that could also sound like "Hide under this rock and you can keep guard from the secret place." Chiron says: "Healing comes through faith and surrender to what you know deep down inside is real," but can also sound like "Just think positive thoughts and the real issues will go away, and then you get to blame anything or anyone that interrupts your reverie."

Together these two interlocking Wedges form a larger aspect pattern called a Cradle. Cradle energy can make it tempting to hide out in the comfort of what is familiar and (relatively) easy. On the other hand, the Cradle can also lead to some very creative problem solving and easing of tension. The trick is to use it to move forward, not to stay stuck in (what seems like) a safe place.

Overall, these coming 2 weeks (until the Solar Eclipse in Scorpio on Nov.13) are bound to be intense, challenging and illuminating. Certainly with the US election occurring during this time, on the day that Mercury stations Retrograde, the results will have a dramatic effect on the state of the US, and by implication the rest of the world. No matter who wins the election, there will be people who will feel like Saturn just slammed the door in their face.

Whatever happens, Taurus and Saturn urge calm and maturity. That doesn't mean passive compliance, but it does mean keeping both feet on the ground and resisting the urge to let your anger lift you like a hot air balloon above level-headedness. It's bound to be a volatile time. Whether you're happy or unhappy with the results, those who can express what they feel, while still maintaining some composure, along with balanced, centred and grounded energy, will be valuable resources to the collective.

With Mercury stationing Retrograde on Election Day, final results might not be known right away. Patience and balance will be invaluable resources!

Remember—this is but one stepping stone in a very long journey. Strive to learn and evolve during this time of fluctuation and change. No matter what destination you envision as ideal, it's important to stay true to the highest values you embrace. If the means we use to get to our destination are inconsistent with the principles, ethics and values we want to see when we get there, then we've lost sight of the goal.

Oct.29-Nov.08 – Cardinal T-square with Venus

[diagram] Venus forms yet another T-square with the Uranus-Pluto square, which puts a new spin on that intensely transformative energy that will be with us for several more years. Venus opposes Uranus and squares Pluto. The Taurus side of Venus wants stability, predictability and simple pleasures, whereas Uranus would rather die than submit to anything of the sort. Since Venus is currently in Libra she's willing to negotiate, but Uranus being an all-or-nothing kinda guy and also in competitive Aries, isn't likely to be very cooperative.

The ever stealthy Pluto is in square aspect to both of them. He encourages Venus to be sly in her negotiations, being steered by secret agendas, which is only likely to aggravate Uranus even further. Pluto also whispers to Uranus to pretend to go along with Venus' negotiations in order to gain the competitive edge, and then change direction suddenly when Venus is lulled into a false sense of balance and cooperation.

With the Venus energy now directly involved in the massive transformation we are collectively going through, relationships could become tricky. If you have a relationship (of any kind: close friendship, spouse, partner, etc) that has been skirting around a problem for a while, this T-square could yank it into the foreground as a conflict that must be dealt with. While this is likely to be stressful and intense, it can also clear the air and shed the energy between the two of you that is getting in the way. If you can work with the energy rather than just fighting it and trying to get away from it, it can also significantly increase a sense of depth and authenticity in your relationship.

You might also find you are struggling between the high octane energy of groups around you (whether you're involved directly with them or not) versus maintaining a stable balance with your own sense of self in the face of such compelling peer pressure. You'll likely have to adjust your balance point between them.

Any kind of creative work can benefit from trying new things and digging deep into your creative caverns, but be prepared to wrestle with a lot of conflicting priorities, desires and what you want to end up with.

This T-square is closest from Nov.01-03. The Nov.03 exact square between Pluto and Venus forms a T-square when the Moon opposes Pluto and squares Venus and Uranus, making that day especially intense, volatile and challenging. The overall T-square will affect you more if you have planets or points in your natal chart in Cardinal signs from about 2-10°.

Oct.30 – Sun sextile Pluto (07:24 of Scorpio/Capricorn)

Your sense of purpose is potentially strong now, being able to tap into a deeper level of energy and determination. Your personality may be more forceful now, which can be great if you need to make a strong impression but perhaps not so much in situations requiring delicacy or subtlety. You have greater ability to see below the surface of things now, although it may not be as easy to put it all together and understand what it all means. It can be possible to unearth secrets or get at the core of unconscious patterns (yours and others'). However, you'll have to work to harvest the fruit of these potentials, and some of the insights and benefits may not become apparent until later.

Nov.01 – Venus opposite Uranus (05:18 of Libra/Aries)  (Nov.02 in AU)

Relationships, social interaction, material resources and emotional balance may be a bit unpredictable or unstable around this time, as Uranus the Awakener sounds a wake-up gong in these areas. You may be more inclined to act out of character, to experiment or be reckless in relationship, social or financial matters, which could be liberating or disturbing, exciting or upsetting. Circumstances or other people might create a situation in which you are forced to respond in an unusual or unfamiliar way. The idea behind this energy is to become more flexible and more open to a broader vision of what is possible in those areas. There may be weak spots in the affected areas which this transit illuminates by creating problems, so that they can be repaired and strengthened, or else broken and released so that new opportunities can come in. Trust the process and keep your eyes open to seeing new truth and insight.

Nov.03 – Venus square Pluto (07:30 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Nov.04 in AU)

Relationships and interactions are likely to be deep, intense and transformative under this transit. The same goes for your sense of beauty, and your material and financial dealings, which may require you to delve far deeper than usual to discover the truth under the surface of things. You may encounter the dark shadow of your desires – the obscure, secret or unconscious hunger that hides underneath the "politically correct" face you show to the world (and to yourself. This is a challenge to be resolved in some way. It might bring out conflict rooted in envy or jealousy, if someone has something (or someone) that you feel you are entitled to. Or, it might prompt you to reach very deep into your soul to find your inner beauty and value. You may be challenged to develop empathy or empowerment about something that initially seemed undesirable, unforgivable or scary. This transit can show you the problem areas that need to be transformed and healed. And seeing these more clearly can be a catharsis that sets that transformative healing in motion.

Nov.04 – North America resumes Standard Time

If you live in Canada or the US, as well as other locations in or nearby North America, it may be time to stop Daylight Saving Time and resume Standard Time. To do that, you must turn your clocks BACK one hour. If you're not sure whether your area resumes Standard Time today, you can check here to see when and if your location changes to Standard Time.

Nov.06 – Mercury stationary Retrograde (04:18 of Sagittarius)  (Nov.07 in AU)

For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or simply changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde for the last 3 to 3½ weeks, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. This period has challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again.

Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow, your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.

The best news about this Mercury Retrograde cycle is that it is mercifully short! Whereas these cycles are usually about 3½ weeks long, this one is just barely 3 weeks! It might not sound like much, but believe me, most of us will feel relieved to have it over with a bit sooner than usual.

During this cycle, Mercury has three conjunctions with the North Node (Oct.25, Nov.17 and Dec.07), and three squares to Neptune (Oct.29, Nov.13 and Dec.11). This is a time to consider where you're really going – not so much where you want to go (although that's important too) but what direction you're actually pointed in, and whether it will take you where you're trying to go. Your thoughts become the lens that propel you in that direction, so it's a good time to examine what thoughts, ideas, perceptions and judgments go through your mind. Beware of "stinkin' thinkin'" that allows you to frame reality merely in terms of what you want it to be instead. There's a difference between aiming for something wonderful and actually being there.

The stationary Mercury in Sagittarius forms a Grand Trine in Fire signs with Uranus (Aries) and the Moon (Leo). This can make it easier to see beyond your usual way of seeing things. Venturing beyond your comfort zone in your thoughts and perceptions can feel like an exciting adventure, but be aware that this is just what can get you started – it's not the destination (at least not yet).

Nov.09 – Venus trine Jupiter (14:19 of Libra/Gemini)

Your luck and opportunity to attract money, love, resources and self-esteem are high right now. The flow of attraction (whether that is magnetizing people, things or opportunities) is riding a strong current right now. You could find it easier than usual to get the resources and abundance for whatever you need right now. On the other hand, "your eyes may be bigger than your stomach" (as mother used to say), meaning your desire may magnify your sense of need beyond what is wise. You may be tempted to spend, flirt or bluff your way through situations, preferring to ignore or avoid hardship, boundaries or drudgery. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but be careful you don't get your hopes up so high that you set yourself up for disappointment or make promises you can't keep. It's probably wise to balance this easy flowing energy with some discretion and good judgement.

Nov.11 – Neptune stationary Direct (00:21 of Pisces) ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets. )

Neptune now turns direct after being retrograde for about 5 months. For up to a week before and after this date, you might feel a bit dreamy, disconnected, depressed, sluggish or scatter-brained. The Neptune energy takes you into a non-rational, intuitive place and can stir up feelings and issues from the unconscious. Vivid dreams could give you insight into situations you have been wrestling with, and your intuitive sensitivity might seem to come out of nowhere. Or you might experience the opposite—your dreams elude you and you feel cut off from your usual intuitive sense. What is happening is that your "right-brain" (intuitive, creative, non-rational, faith-oriented) is passing the torch to your "left-brain" (rational, logical, linear, practical), and you can get caught in the whirlpool of transition. Try not to control the process, but allow it to carry you and point you in a different direction. The learning you have gathered over the last five months or so—related to spirituality, longing, inspiration, creativity, imagination, fantasy, divination and intuition—can now start to be applied more directly in your life over the next few months. It may be possible to channel your experience into a creative form—possibly artistic, but definitely creating something new out of what has been, which can ultimately be healing and uplifting.
