May.03 – FULL MOON in SCORPIO (13:22 of Scorpio)

Greetings, dear readers!

I have asked the amazing Matthew Currie to write the Full Moon article for this update. Yes, my plate is still overflowing although I hope to be back in the saddle again very soon. In the meantime, I think you're going to enjoy Matthew's astrological insights and wonderful sense of humour. My thanks to Matthew for stepping in!

Matthew is a longtime professional astrologer, counselor and author. He writes a thought provoking and often hilarious column on BeliefNet called Oh My Stars! You can also find Matthew on Twitter: @matthewcurrie and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/theastrologer.

So now I have sworn to bury
All this dead body of hate
I feel so free and so clear
By the loss of that dead weight
~ Lord Alfred Tennyson

First of all, let's get one thing straight: a Full Moon in Scorpio isn't inherently scarier than a Full Moon anywhere else. But at the same time, even people who know next to nothing about astrology know that "Full Moon in Scorpio" sounds like the title of a horror movie or something.

This is, of course, completely unfair to Scorpio. Put another way: if you were a Scorpio and were constantly being told that you have a strong potential for vengefulness and moodiness, you'd probably be pretty vengeful and moody to after a while.

Go ahead: spend a few hours telling a Scorpio they're vengeful and moody. Let me know how that goes over for you. Bonus points for doing it during the Full Moon in Scorpio.

Nonetheless, even professional astrologers like myself love to deal in that quick and easy "Scorpio equals death and darkness" imagery. And of course you don't need to be an astrologer to know what kind of reputation a Full Moon has… Just ask your local werewolf about that.

On the other hand, astrologers and other New Age types love a New Moon. We often tell people to "set their intentions" for the things they want out of their life in the following month on the New Moon. Full Moons, however, have more of a reputation for being a time to lose your marbles than to plan a brand new life for yourself.

This month, I propose combining the two traditions – the one about Scorpio and the Full Moon – into one convenient package that will be of genuine use to everyone: let's make this the "kill something that needs to be killed" Full Moon.

Scorpios aren't necessarily more obsessed with death and destruction than anyone else, and they certainly aren't more or less mortal than anyone else. But Scorpio does rule the body's eliminatory functions, and in this case that symbolism might be of use to you.

Combined with the temporary emotional ruckus the Full Moon can bring, this Full Moon might be an ideal time to put on your Big Boy Pants and get out there and cut something loose that needs to be cut. Yes, I know, you're way too "love and light" to treat your life or the people in it that way. Think of it as "necessary surgery" if you prefer.

This Full Moon has some particular features going for it when it comes to cutting things loose, and not just the fact that it is in Scorpio. In part to this is because two of the planets you need to cut something away are in fact not very aspected at all one way or another.

"Cutting" is ruled by Mars. Mars is in Taurus for this Full Moon. Now normally astrologers will tell you that Mars in Taurus is not a particularly good placement. It tends to be moody and hard to budge, but then when it takes off it stampedes. There's a certain amount of truth to that, but if you're dealing with a long-standing issue that you really ought to change, maybe a stampede is exactly what you're looking for. For this Full Moon, Mars is not receiving any major aspects from any other planets. In other words: use your own common sense as a way to direct that energy, because once that ball starts rolling none of the other planets are going to help you.

AAnd then there is Saturn, which is retrograde in the early degrees of Sagittarius and isn't getting many aspects at all, other than a weak square from Neptune and an annoying opposition from Mercury. Mercury is smart but a bit too timid to take bold action, and Neptune is a lot of fun but constantly needs a Designated Driver. Neither one of these planets is being terribly helpful to Saturn.

Making your plans and following them through is great, but often what's needed to make things work is a little luck and perhaps some unusual circumstances. That's where Jupiter trine Uranus comes in. When the good fortune of Jupiter and the unusual circumstances of Uranus are harmoniously combined, great things can happen.

And speaking of Uranus: the exact peaks of the Uranus Pluto square may be behind us, but it is still in effect, lurking quietly just under the surface while other, newer transits grab our attention. But it's still there, just like the shark from Jaws… except without the deep tones of the John Williams theme to warn us that someone is about to be suddenly bitten in half.

Finally there's that whole (upcoming) Mercury retrograde thing. If you've hung around astrologers long enough, you've heard all sorts of things about how, when Mercury is retrograde, you can expect your communications to go wrong, business agreements to screw up, your car to break down during short trips, and so on.

Every time Mercury retrograde happens, I rolled my eyes at the silly superstition of it. Then sure enough, something goes wrong, Mercury retrograde style. Go figure.

The lesson here is: when Mercury is retrograde make sure you stop to proofread that email, make sure you're sending it to the right person, and try to have a backup plan whenever possible… But don't let it run your life.

Mercury doesn't go retrograde until the day after the next New Moon, so make the best of your communications and short trips now, before Silly Season kicks in with those things.

Do a loony-goony dance
'Cross the kitchen floor,
Put something silly in the world
That ain't been there before.
~ Shel Silverstein, A Light in the Attic

May.03 – Mercury Out of Bounds (3:47 to 13:08 of Gemini; until May.19)   (May.04 in AU)   ("What is Out of Bounds?"   "What is Declination?"

Mercury goes Out of Bounds (OOB), giving us the ability to peek into ideas and observations beyond our usual thoughts and awareness. The "air up there" can be a bit rarefied. If you're not used to it (and even if you are), your thoughts might seem almost a bit drunk, confused, inspired or flowing so freely that it's hard to capture them clearly. If you do catch one of these thoughts clearly, remember that it's an idea, not necessarily reality, although you could use it to create a new reality for yourself. Your mental peripheral vision can become expanded, taking in more information than usual.

Like all things in astrology and life, this has its upside and its downside. Much depends on what thoughts you feed and what you feed them with. If you feed them with fear, suspicion, anger or hostility, you could find yourself feeling somewhat paranoid, easily angered or looking for ways to cheat. On the upside, you may discover a fresh understanding about things, putting new pieces of the puzzle into place and tapping into a higher level of truth. Try writing down your ideas, perceptions, thoughts and moods. After Mercury comes back down to earth, you can see how you can put those observations and ideas to good use.

In this case, Mercury comes back in-bounds the day after it turns retrograde, so be prepared to do some deeper thinking and processing of the information you gather while it's Out of Bounds.

May.04 – Sun square Jupiter (13:35 of Taurus/Leo)   (May.03 in HAST)

You may be inspired to expand far beyond your usual boundaries during this time, although this may or may not work in the way you hope it will. It can be a time of challenge, when you decide that now is the time to move beyond your current horizons and make the ultimate push for something you believe will bring you happiness, fulfilment and prosperity. How successful you are will probably depend on how prepared you are for what comes next. Your judgment and your ability to see things objectively and realistically can be a little "off" during this transit, since your hopes and ideals might distort what is actually possible. It can be easy to overestimate the envisioned results, or you might underestimate the amount of work necessary to sustain your dream and prevent it from being just a flash in the pan. Try to avoid being overconfident and making promises you can't keep (including to yourself).

May.06 – Mercury enters the Shadow (04:33 of Gemini; until Jun.26)  ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury is now "in the Shadow" – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde in about 2½ weeks time. During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through the same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more extensive process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences—ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected. This includes not just talking, but also email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods.

The situations developing over the next couple of weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, to plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. Patience is a valuable quality during this time. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes—or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

May.06 – Sun trine Pluto (15:27 of Taurus/Capricorn)   (May.05 in HAST)

Your sense of purpose is strong now, as you are able to tap into a deeper level of energy and determination. Your personality is likely to be more forceful now, which can be great if you need to make a strong impression but perhaps not so much in situations requiring delicacy or subtlety. Your ability to see below the surface of things is especially clear, and it may be possible to unearth secrets or get at the core of unconscious patterns (yours or others'). This is a time when your personal presence may come across as somewhat "larger than life," so you need to remember that a little goes a long way during this transit. This could be a time when you suddenly find the strength to stand up and assert your personal power in a situation that has felt overwhelming or discouraging. On the other hand, if you are still struggling to learn how to own your power, without using nuclear bombs to make your point, you may still feel a bit overwhelmed or daunted by this transit. In that case, take smaller steps and don't try to push the river.

May.07 – Venus enters Cancer (until Jun.05)   (May.08 in AU)

Your focus in relationships may shift for a while to family, loved ones and people in your support system. You may also find that your interactions with others takes on a quality that echoes the past, perhaps childhood, and you want to reach out to connect with others more than usual – or to avoid it if those echoes are not pleasant ones. You could be especially sensitive to getting your emotional needs met, or how others want their needs to be met. Interactions with others may bring up a deep need to belong and to connect and bond with others on a personal level. The need to feel secure and safe could come up in a variety of forms now – either directly as a feeling of vulnerability, or indirectly disguised as defensiveness or manipulation. This could also a time when you want to be somewhat protective and cautious in your handling of money, possessions and other resources, striving to conserve and cultivate these areas in order to nurture them for future growth.

May.09 – Mercury square Neptune (09:30 of Gemini/Pisces)   (May.10 in AU)

Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.

May.11 – Sun sextile Chiron (20:43 of Taurus/Pisces)   (May.12 in AU)

This is a time when you have an opportunity to mend and heal the chronic struggles in your life. You may find new inspiration, motivation or confidence that can help rejuvenate waning enthusiasm or reconcile persistent problems, although you'll still have to apply effort to bring it all together. You might get the chance to demonstrate your ability to walk your own path in a new way. Or, you might get a peek inside the hidden shadow of your worries and discouragement, giving you new insight into how you might be unconsciously sabotaging your conscious efforts. You may have to face a bit of your own fear of failure or low self-esteem before you can get beyond these feelings and tap into the benefits of this transit – not because you are failing but because these concerns may arise in response to the new potential now available to you. By tapping into this potential for creative problem solving, you can bring some healing to whatever your situation is.

May.11 – Mars enters Gemini (until Jun.24)   (May.12 in NDT, UK, AU)

Your physical and mental energy are likely to be more available in Gemini – in fact, maybe a bit too available! You typically have the energy to pursue opportunities and ideas, but this can also make you a bit distracted or shorten your attention span. Inspired ideas can lead to impulsive action, which is great when you want to be decisive, take the initiative or find courage in the moment. However, if your ideas are not well grounded or thought out, you might "shoot first and ask questions later." The more you can focus your mind to go after what you want, the more effective your actions will be. With Mars in Gemini, "the pen is mightier than the sword." When conflict arises, it is more likely to be fought and resolved with words and ideas, than with fists. This is a good time to mentally focus your intent and then act on your ideas.

May.15 – Mars opposite Saturn (02:13 of Gemini/Sagittarius)   (May.14 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

This can be a difficult transit that pits your individual will and desire against anything or anyone that seem to block it. Authority figures can become adversaries who may seem to only want to say No in response to what you want to do. As a result, it is easy to polarize to others during this transit – to rebel and fight by pulling in the opposite direction. It will help if you can manage to keep a firm grip on your own Inner Adult – the part of you that is responsible and accountable – instead of letting others act out that role in your life. Alternatively, if you find it easier to be the responsible, serious, structured Adult, then it will help to embrace your own spontaneous and exuberant impulses, rather than polarizing to others who exhibit those qualities. By owning both energies in this transit, you can work with both your spontaneous impulses AND your ability to cautiously pick and choose when and how to act. This may not be easy, since these energies do not mix easily, but when they work together they can generate potent productivity, ambition and results.

May.16 – Venus square North Lunar Node (09:13 of Cancer/Libra)   (May.15 in HAST)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Perhaps you're finding that the people in your life are not being as supportive, encouraging or cooperative as you thought they would be, in terms of helping you fulfil your life purpose. Someone might suddenly withdraw their support, or maybe they contradict or interfere with what you're trying to do with your life. Perhaps an argument or disagreement happens and the upset, stress or hard feelings that result seem to cast a shadow on how you feel about your life. If this happens, it's possible that what you disagree about is something you should look at more closely. Are you responding to this situation in a way that truly reflects your values? Or perhaps your values need to be reconsidered. The agreement or balance of priorities between you might need to be renegotiated. This transit might also manifest as problems around finances or possessions, which requires some adjustment on your part. Since this transit usually lasts only a few days, in most cases its effects will not be major. If it does bring up some significant issues, it is probably hinting at a deeper issue, and you would be wise to look at the problem beyond the current circumstances. Other transits (especially to your natal chart) can give you more information about the nature of the situation.

May.16 – Venus trine Neptune (09:37 of Cancer/Pisces)   (May.17 in AU)

This can be a time of romance, creativity, and a sense of oneness with the natural beauty of all that exists in the world. On a social or intimate level, things may run smoothly – even a bit magically! So be sure you are clear about what you really want. In terms of finances and material worth, this can be a time of blessings and abundance that could seem to appear out of nowhere. But be careful – it can also be a time of overspending and wondering where the money went! Your natural beauty and warmth shines through now, so it is a good time to peek out from behind any façade of glamour or illusion you might be cloaked in. You are likely to see the very best in others (and they in you), so that negotiation, interaction and attraction can seem to flow effortlessly. This magical attraction energy could also open you up to seeing wonderful qualities in others that may or may not actually be there, so do a reality check with a trusted friend before you make any important choices.
