Jun.02 – FULL MOON in SAGITTARIUS (11:49 of Sagittarius)

What are beliefs made of?

Whatever you think, you're probably a little bit wrong and a little bit right.

You might say you believe in God. You might believe in the laws of karma, or in the power of optimism and positive thinking.

You might even say you don't "believe" in anything, but that truth and facts are either provable or they're not. Belief simply isn't part of the equation.

If you're reading this article, you would possibly say you believe in astrology... or you might consider astrology to operate independent of belief.

Believing something, or believing in something, may or may not require your belief in order to be real.

Belief is simply our trust, conviction, opinion or judgment that something is real, whether or not we can prove its existence. The debate about what constitutes that proof draws the line that separates belief from reality, just as much as their inherent natures do. How that debate is won is hugely influenced by culture, tradition, politics, power and psychology.

There is very little about beliefs that is solid or certain, and yet they guide our every decision and action in the "real" world.

Welcome to the territory of Sagittarius! And say hello to the Full Moon tour guide who can help you map out that territory.

The trouble was that he was talking in philosophy
but they were listening in gibberish.
~ Terry Pratchett, Small Gods

Every Full Moon is an axis – two opposing signs, with the Moon at one end and the Sun at the other. At best, they'll balance each other out. At worst, they'll compete and try to annihilate the other. This Full Moon is likely to be a bit of both.

In Gemini, the Sun is flanked by Mercury on one side and Mars on the other. Even though they're sitting next to each other, their eyes are glued to their smart phones as they text back and forth with each other, while commenting on Facebook posts and hunting for great astrology book deals on Amazon. (Never assume Gemini will pass up an opportunity for information overload.)

Mercury is very much at home in his own sign of Gemini so he's strong, witty, observant and playful. But he's also retrograde (until Jun.11), so he's confused and often incoherent. Poor Mercury is stuck in Autocorrect Hell, having texted "Let's go down to the reference library" which wound up as "Lips gotta dance in the smartypants winery." Even when he tries talking out loud, it's not much better: "Let's dampen two holy diaries. I mean, lamps are depressed in the wretched firepit! I mean—oh forget it!!!"

Mars texts "ROFLMAO! OMG 2FUNNY! CYA L8R, G2G2 LIBRARY." (Rolling on the floor laughing my a** off! Oh my God too funny! See ya later, got to go to the library.) The Sun just rolls his eyes at both of them and tries to call the Moon on his phone, but can't get a line out. "Ah, the joys of mobile communication under Mercury retrograde!"

While Sun, Mercury and Mars drive around in circles in their clown car, the Moon is growing impatient and distracted. She was expecting to receive a database of information to use for her thesis on The Truth about Belief – Fact and Fantasy. With only scattered, disjointed and incomplete data to go on, she's starting to think maybe she should just make up some of the data. After all, she knows what the conclusion will be; all she needs is the facts and evidence to back it up. She knows it's out there and was supposed to get it from the Gemini Triplets, but that doesn't seem likely at this point. What to do...?

To learn which questions are unanswerable,
and not to answer them: this skill is most needful
in times of stress and darkness.
~ Ursula K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness

Enter Neptune.

Well, at least the other planets think it's Neptune. Dressed in a shimmering translucent cloak, they can't quite make out who it is, but they figure anyone that mysterious with that much glittery presence must be Neptune.

T-Square aspect pattern

Neptune is only too happy to be the go-between transmitter between the Gemini librarians and the truth seeking Moon. They're all so happy to have the help that they don't bother to read the fine print on the contract – they just sign on the dotted line. Only afterwards do they notice that something is amiss. Oops! Neptune actually forms a T-square aspect pattern with them, which isn't very conducive to clear, accurate communication.

Mercury is beginning to suspect that Neptune is the manufacturer of the autocorrect program on his phone. Mars is trying to read the roadmap to deliver the data to the Moon, but finds that Neptune's GPS keeps telling him to take a long drive off a short dock. The Sun, who's the driver of the clown car, has one headlight that keeps blinking on and off, so he keeps misreading the signs and missing the turnoffs.

The Moon is still confident she can work with whatever Neptune gives her. It's just a matter of sculpting the information into the shape of the conclusion she wants to arrive at. But somehow the data is so...fluid, changeable and ambiguous that she can't get her arguments to hold water.

What the Moon does discover is that she can aim the ideas in any particular direction – she just has to adjust her basic assumptions. In other words, if she wants to arrive at the idea that the sky is always blue, all she has to do is cherry-pick the raw data. For example, define the colour of clouds as always being a shade of blue. Or show how all light contains all colours, and therefore blue is always present – therefore, the sky is always blue. Or she might take a detour by transcending blue-ness altogether and talk instead about sub-atomic waves that could become any colour the observer wishes to see. Or she might wax poetic about how, even when the sky is white or grey from its clouds, it is still blue in its mood. You get the idea.

When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity.
~ Albert Einstein

The point is that all of these arguments are both right and wrong in some way. It's all in how you look at it. It varies depending on how you decide what's true and the basic assumptions and definitions you start out with.

What flavour of truth were you shopping for? Did you want facts that can be measured with machines and compared? Did you want inspiration that could give you a sense of hope and purpose? Were you looking for truth that would lead to justice for those who have been wronged? Or perhaps you seek a greater perspective that can give new meaning to murky questions.

Whatever you seek, it is wise to be aware of this first before you buy into what it seems to promise and sign on the dotted line, so to speak. Neptunian ripples abound right now, applying a mental Autocorrect to much of what we seek in the way of truth, meaning and hope. It's not necessarily wrong just because it's a bit vague, but by the same token, if it's pretty and glows that doesn't mean it's what you're looking for either.

Mercury makes 3 square aspects to Neptune during this retrograde cycle (May.09, May.29 and Jun.23). And as we've seen, Neptune is the lynch pin that turns this Full Moon energy as well. While Neptune can be great for releasing pent-up stress, helping you feel uplifted and inspiring for creative endeavours, it's not the best energy if you're shopping for a flavour of truth that's a bit more specific, realistic, stable or factual.

If you're expecting to make any big decisions, it might be best to wait a while, if you can, before you really commit yourself. If possible, putting off final decisions until well after Mercury goes direct (Jun.11) might be a good idea, and even better to wait until he's out of the Shadow (Jun.26). And for good measure, consider waiting for even a few days after that, giving Mercury a chance to move out of orb from the final square to Neptune.

Now: having said that, I also know it's not always possible to put life on hold for a month, especially when you have important decisions to make and actions that simply can't wait. In that case, it's probably wise to be aware of the potential for making assumptions that may not be real.

There's a lot to be said, under this kind of energy, for listening to your intuition and paying attention when your gut tells you that something isn't sitting right. On the other hand, you'll still have to reason your way through the briar patch – you probably shouldn't just assume you can drift magically through the thorns on intuition alone.

When feeling your way along by intuition, do it in little steps. Test the water with your toe before you plunk your foot right in ...or at least leave yourself a way to back up if you need to.

No thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge,
and that is why knowledge is the best and safest
treasure to acquire.
~ L. Frank Baum, The Lost Princess of Oz

There's another reason why it's a good idea to have at least one foot firmly planted on the ground while crossing this Neptunian quicksand. For about 24 hours after the Full Moon is exact, the Neptune T-square breaks up and the Moon moves on to form a Grand Trine with Jupiter and Uranus. That shifts the energy from being stressful (or motivating), confusing and uncertain, into a wild ride! Think of it like trying to walk along slippery algae-covered rocks in a stream to suddenly finding yourself sliding down a smooth natural waterfall!

Grand Trine aspect pattern

Whatever way you are able to embrace the Neptune energy—that's what you are likely to bring with you into the Grand Trine water slide. (Okay okay, so it's a Fire Grand Trine and water metaphors maybe aren't the best, but it's still exciting and wild, which Fire loves! And we are, after all, coming out of Watery Neptune...)

In other words, once you are immersed in the intuitive spirit of Neptune, you might find you are suddenly transported quickly to the next stage of things. That might be exciting and fun, or it might be a bit scary and stressful. Either way, it might be a while before you feel like you're "back in Kansas" again.

So enjoy the trip! But don't forget that what happens in Kansas usually stays in Kansas... even though you're bound to come back with some profound learning. ;-)

Make up a story... For our sake and yours forget your name in the street; tell us what the world has been to you in the dark places and in the light. Don't tell us what to believe, what to fear.
Show us belief's wide skirt and the stitch that unravels fear's caul.

Jun.05 – Venus enters Leo (until Jul.18)   (Jun.06 in AU)

This can be a very creative time, as Venus' love of beauty combines with Leo's creative flair for the dramatic. Find ways to feel good by making your surroundings and yourself beautiful and reflective of your inner spirit! High fashion and vogue style are "in," and crudeness and ordinariness are out...unless you want to turn them into a fashion statement. ;-) However, it's probably wise not to become so identified with the outer appearance of yourself or others that you lose sight of the person, situation or context that it's all happening in. The aim is to pamper yourself with pleasures that enhance your quality of life, without inflating your ego with synthetic self-esteem and glamour without substance. Relationships, interaction, finances, values and resources all need to include ways to express your identity, valour and "heart." Some light-hearted fun and play can be a good place to start.

Jun.05 – Mars sextile Jupiter (17:20 of Gemini/Leo)   (Jun.06 in UK, AU)

There is potential for optimism, cheerfulness and increased energy during this transit. You will probably have to go after it (rather than it just falling into your lap), but you can probably increase your mood and energy level by applying a bit of effort. Your self-confidence and general attitude can improve, although be careful you don't become so caught up in feeling good that you ignore common sense, caution or realism. This is a good time to consider the moral, philosophical or greater implications of your actions, and then make adjustments to bring your behaviour into alignment with your beliefs, aspirations and ideals.

Jun.06 – Venus trine Saturn (00:35 of Leo/Sagittarius)   (Jun.05 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

Stability in relationships and finances characterises this transit. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and to invest the hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and interaction with others. Commitment and structure are easier to achieve and embrace than change or taking risks. Self-worth can benefit now because you are less inclined to give in to mood swings. However, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Jun.06 – Mars goes Out of Bounds (17:52 Gemini to 15:11 Cancer; until Jul.17)   (Jun.07 in AU)   ("What is Out of Bounds?"   "What is Declination?")

Mars goes Out of Bounds (OOB) for about 6 weeks. During that time you might encounter new experiences related to courage, aggression or taking action. For example, you may find you are seized with inspiration to champion a cause, or you might decide that now is the time to do something you've been hesitating about for a while and were just waiting for the right moment.

There is always the less constructive side of Mars to watch for, as well. For instance, bold action could become reckless if it's not balanced with wisdom, realistic expectations and awareness of the consequences that you might have to live with afterwards. Anger and frustration could flare up more easily or intensely than usual, which is probably best expressed in constructive ways that don't leave ashes and ruins behind you.

Your instincts could be finely tuned during this time, picking up on distant or subtle signals and relaying these to your impulses which result in doing things without a lot of conscious forethought. This can feel exciting or energizing, but remember that you will still have to live with the results, so if you find this is creating problems it might be best to slow things down a bit so you can consider your best course of action before actually doing it.

It's also possible that during this time you won't notice much at all. Not everyone is attuned to the OOB Mars energy, although you still might observe it in others around you. Or, your experience of this Mars energy might be a quieter signal that you need to focus on more carefully to get a clear sense of it.

Jun.08 – Sun sextile Jupiter (17:47 of Gemini/Leo)   (Jun.09 in AU)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it has the potential to click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time. Just be careful that all this self-assurance and "knowing" doesn't backfire, by overestimating the extent of your knowledge or underestimating the reaction of your audience. It is possible to become a bit self-indulgent under this transit, so be careful not to overdo it. Beyond a reasonable caution, this is a transit to enjoy!

Jun.09 – Mars sextile Uranus (19:37 of Gemini/Aries)   (Jun.08 in HAST, AKDT)

You have an opportunity to move forward through inspired action. This can bring creative problem solving to any conflicts or challenges that are currently in your life. Now is the time to think outside the box and experiment with trying out new responses, actions and directions. It may be easier to be spontaneous and even to act "out of character." If this is something you easily go overboard with, you might want to find ways to channel this constructively. The idea is to be refreshingly spontaneous, not recklessly impulsive. On the other hand, if you have trouble kicking up your heels and being free and unfettered, this transit can be used to get you moving a bit better. If you don't use this energy constructively or consciously, you might wind up feeling somewhat erratic or restless. Find something exciting, inspiring or unusual to spend your energy on.

Jun.10 – Mercury Retrograde sextile Venus (04:38 of Gemini/Leo)

There is a potential to benefit from social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness during this transit, although a certain amount of effort is needed to make this happen. It can be a good time for negotiating contracts and other agreements, especially if you consciously focus your intent on achieving balance with your counterpart, partner or opponent that results in a win-win situation for all concerned. There is also potential to appreciate and express beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone in your life that you want to get closer to, try speaking gently and listening receptively, which can be the key that opens the door to harmonious interaction. Creative ideas can also find expression now if you apply your conscious awareness to bring them into focus. The thing to watch for is a tendency to use manipulation to achieve an advantage, which might be done by you or to you. Keep communication straightforward and clear, and find diplomatic ways to deal with manipulation if you sense it happening.

Mercury has been going very slow and goes direct one day after it sextiles Venus. It then catches up to sextile Venus again on Jul.05. As a result, Mercury and Venus effectively remain in sextile (within less than 06:30 orb) from June 5 to July 9.

Jun.10 – Sun sextile Uranus (19:41 of Gemini/Aries)   (Jun.11 in AU)

You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are more finely tuned during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Just have fun pushing the envelope! You may also find you want things to be spontaneous and new and out-of-the-ordinary so much that it's hard not to feel restless and dissatisfied with ordinary life right now. But remember that trying to plan spontaneity defeats the purpose of the exercise. And if you are hungering for something new but can't seem to find something satisfying, try digging a little deeper to see what is driving that hunger from inside you. You could find surprising answers.

Jun.11 – Mercury Stationary Direct (04:33 of Gemini; until Sep.17)   (Jun.12 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Mercury finally turns direct! Yippeeee!!!! ;-) But we're not out of the woods just yet. For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or simply changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde for the last 3 to 3½ weeks, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. This period has challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again.

Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow, your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.

The key dates of this Mercury cycle are (for North American Eastern Time):

Jun.11 – Mars square Chiron (21:29 of Gemini/Pisces)   (Jun.12 in UK, AU)

It may be time to confront issues in your life that involve how/why you get hurt by others, how you yourself hurt others, and how healing can take place in either of these situations. Your awareness of this may due to a conflict in your life, but this can be a valuable learning experience for you, more-so than usual. Part of the problem may be that you need to tread your own path but are avoiding this for whatever reasons – perhaps circumstances compel you to satisfy others' expectations, or perhaps you are still struggling to muster the courage to find and walk your own path. Whatever the reasons, this transit may give you a push that will help to steer you in a healing direction, possibly by showing you how and why the path you have been on does not lead to where you want to go. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take some time out from the stress to get re-centered and grounded.

Jun.12 – Neptune Stationary Retrograde (09:49 of Pisces; until Nov.18)   (Jun.11 in HAST)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after this date, you may feel a thick concentration of Neptune energy. This could include vivid dreams and imagination, foggy confusion or fluid intuition. You might experience unusual sensitivity to the people and situations around you. The station could create a turning point in situations that have unfolded over the last few months, especially those in which you need to surrender to something greater than yourself, whether that is the creative process, a stressful situation or the Universe in general. This can be a time when you come to an internal acceptance (or resignation) about what needs to be done in your life. As a result, you might feel a sense of longing, dissatisfaction, disappointment, sadness, depression, fatigue or low energy. Or, you might feel a sense of unburdening relief, inspiration, hopeful possibilities or deep beauty. The next 5-6 months will be a time to probe the spaces in between the facts and the uncertainties – to learn about that force greater than yourself, as well as the (unconscious) part of yourself that longs to merge with it.

Jun.12 – Sun square Chiron (21:29 of Gemini/Pisces)   (Jun.13 in AU)

Your self-confidence and patience may be a bit strained right now, stretched by the urge to break free of chronic constraints. Motivation and self-esteem may seem to sag and suffer from old problems that you thought were resolved. This is probably because you are seeing "the flaws in the system" that are preventing you from getting the results you want. It will help to take a fresh approach to your situation. You may need to let go of what you think the results "should be" or how they should come to you. Be open to getting what you want in a different form than you were expecting. You may have to work extra hard for results now, especially if it means having to find a different route to success. If it seems like a door of opportunity has closed, look for an unexpected advantage or hidden alternative. This could allow you to tap into other opportunities that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

Jun.14 – Sun conjunct Mars (23:17 of Gemini)   (Jun.15 in AU)

This transit gives you energy to burn! However, that energy could be productive or volatile, or even both. You are likely to be a lot more motivated and enthusiastic about whatever you do. But you could also be more impulsive, distracted and erratic too. Anger can flare quickly, and if you don't try to control it or hang onto it, it can pass just as quickly. Sexual energy or desire may be high now, which can be fun to take advantage of, but could also get you into trouble if you don't use some good judgment about who, when or where to act on that desire. This transit represents a new beginning in how you use and work with your energy – physical, emotional, spiritual and motivational energy. It can be a great time to initiate new goals, or to set plans into motion. It may be easier to stand up for what you believe – to assert yourself, to confront someone or to express yourself in ways that you had previously been inhibited. It takes practice and awareness to learn to tell your genuine impulses (that reflect and express who you are) from unconscious motives (that may be passive-aggressive, manipulative or hostile). This transit could give you an opportunity to observe both sides of this potent energy.

Jun.14 – Saturn in Scorpio (until Sep.17)   (Jun.15 in UK, AU)

The thought of stern Saturn coming together with severe Scorpio may not be high on your list of exciting adventures. To be sure, these two energies can combine in ways that could make you feel like an ox pulling a heavy cart up a steep hill. Scorpio runs very deep emotionally, so it is almost incapable of undergoing any experience except with intensity that savours and experiences every last feeling, urge, challenge and desire. To Saturn the results matter, so the priority is to find the best, most effective and efficient way to accomplish the goal.

The upside is that together they have the stamina, determination and fortitude to scale the most difficult mountain or emerge in one piece from the deepest, darkest cave. Whatever challenge you throw at them, they'll gird their collective loins and do whatever needs to be done. Saturn also lends stability, practicality and realism to the Scorpio process of transformation and change. Both of them are happy to proceed slowly—Saturn, so that the job is done right; Scorpio, so that all aspects of the experience are acknowledged and embraced.

The downside is that once Saturn has set his sights on a goal, the Scorpio tendency for obsession can take over the project and keep it rolling, even when it would be wise to change course or shut it down or bring it to a close. Scorpio can continue hurling itself against the brick wall in its path, long past the point where Saturn knows that the plan must be altered in order to either get past the obstacle or choose a different path. At its worst, Saturn in Scorpio can even resort to cruelty, vindictiveness or tyranny, if it believes that's the only way to triumph. Better to use these powers for good, than to succumb to the urge to inflict them on others.

While transiting Saturn is in Scorpio, you may encounter situations where you must draw on your staunchest strength and deepest resolve in order to persevere to the other side. Why would anyone do this? Why not just give up and let circumstances have their way? Why not just focus on survival and leave it as that? Because if you're honest with yourself, you know you care about what happens. And the only way to have a say in what happens is to participate and work with the situation. You will be transformed by the process. It's a question of whether you empower yourself by participating in the process, or wind up being dragged through it kicking and screaming.
