Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
~ Winston S. Churchill
Look around you. What or who do you see? How do these people, places and things fit into your life? What can you identify, and what or whom do you identify with? What pulls your mind to him/her/it/them?
These objects of your attention might reflect the kind of world you want to see. Or, conversely—and perhaps more to the point, given this Gemini New Moon chart—maybe your mind is drawn to them because they reflect what needs to change.
And speaking of change, what makes you really mad these days? What's the trigger? What has gotten under your skin, especially in recent weeks, that has upset you, broken your heart or yanked you out of your usual "normal" centre?
What do you feel when that happens, and how do you express or describe those feelings? Who do you talk to about it? Communication comes in many forms, and Gemini is nothing if not a communicator.
Do you SCREAM IT OUT IN ALL CAPS on Facebook or Twitter? Do you call a friend and commiserate about the appalling state of the world? Do you write about it in your web blog? Or perhaps you talk to your cat or dog?
Maybe you dance it out in your living room to loud music. Or write it down in your journal. You might impulsively (or compulsively) take it out on people who annoy you, letting them have the brunt of your deeper frustration which may have little or nothing to do with them. You might be moved to join a cause that allows you to channel your ire into constructive change. Or maybe you just work it off at the gym.
Whatever you do with your energy, anger, frustration or passion, this New Moon in Gemini lunar cycle will give you a chance to become aware of it, observe it, get to know it in a different way, and explore new ways to express it.
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.
~ Martha Graham
Mars is not usually known for his sophisticated communication. This planet represents anger, forcefulness, assertiveness, passion and action, among other things. Mars is the guy with the muscle you want to make sure is on your side. It's the energy that drives the expression of your emotion, for better or worse. Many Western cultures tend to prefer Mars vacate the premises when proper company comes around, but the other side is that it's also the force that gets you up off the couch and doing things. You might be more genteel and amicable with an amputated Mars, but you're not likely to get much done either.
Our celestial warrior is a central player in this Gemini New Moon saga, since Mars is tightly conjunct the Sun and Moon. Its energy will dominate the coming lunar cycle. Mars' raw nature is volatile, aggressive and impulsive, and tends to have a bad reputation. One of the least socially acceptable forms of Mars energy is anger (aside from stripping naked and running through the streets wearing nothing but a machine gun, I suppose). Its expressions cover a rather broad territory, and at the extreme edges include violence, revenge and malice. Not exactly a recipe to win friends and influence people.
To avoid rejection or conflict, many of us try to shut down our anger. The problem is that other feelings and emotions tend to lose their strength and integrity when this happens, including the happier ones. When this happens, we may feel depressed (although there are many different types and causes of depression) or we might find we become surrounded by others who act out our repressed anger.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, too much Mars can bring an eruption of our own irritation, impatience, defensiveness, accidents, reactivity, or just inability to "suffer fools" (gladly or any other way). In that case, even the more pleasant emotions can get pumped up way beyond their usual levels, and you wind up "blowing hot and cold" across the whole spectrum of feelings.
The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them – words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for want of an understanding ear.
~ Stephen King
So why (you might ask) are we talking about feelings, which belong to the element of Water? Isn't the New Moon in an Air sign?? Yes, indeed it is.
Water is all about feelings, whereas Air is the realm thought, communication, ideas, perception...and awareness. And there you have it: how you focus your awareness and perceptions, and how you frame them and name them, can make a big difference in how you are able to experience, handle and channel your feelings. Despite being worlds apart in many ways, these two elements are very much linked and often work hand-in-hand: head and heart.
The Water-Air connection is shown in various different signatures in the New Moon chart. First and foremost, the Sun and Moon are tightly conjunct Mars. We're talking a swift half-degree orb; in fact, Mars is still feeling the breeze from the Sun and Moon whooshing past him.
In the West, modern astrology tends to associate Mars with Fire since he is the planetary ruler of Fire sign Aries. This side of Mars is impulsive, courageous, sometimes reckless and always grappling with risk and taking action. However, in traditional astrology his home element is actually Water, reflecting his traditional rulership of Water sign Scorpio. The Watery side of Mars is about passion, desire and intense emotional expression.
Air is about the expression of ideas, thoughts, perceptions and the media through which that expression manifests – talking, writing, reading, teaching, body language, and so on. Add Mars to the mix and that language gets pretty lively and to-the-point.
So, what we need to know at the New Moon is: what's the focus? What is being talked or written about? And what is the style or feeling tone with which it's being expressed? Air (and especially the Air sign of Gemini) will contribute the information, curiosity, ideas and content. Mars will add passion, drama, emphasis, enthusiasm, forcefulness—or even aggression or violence at its extreme.
On the up side, these combined energies can evoke an explosion of curiosity, excited conversation, passionate exchange of ideas, or enthusiastic planning and scheming. Your lust for information might be so fired up that it's hard to concentrate on just one thing when so many other things distract your attention. If you have something to tell the world (a lecture to give, an article to write, catching up in your journal, etc), this can be a time when your words have a bright, powerful, even penetrating effect.
On the down side, the combined result can range from frustration and annoyance to getting downright cranky or hostile toward anything (or anyone) that appears to contradict your priorities. Your patience may wear thin more quickly than usual, as you struggle not to strangle idiots who insist on stomping across your path with muddy boots.
When you feel that way during the upcoming lunar cycle it's a good idea to take a step back. Pick and choose your battles and decide wisely which ones are actually worth the fight. Jupiter makes a cooperative, creative sextile aspect (60°) to the Sun-Moon-Mars trio. So, if you're feeling riled-up and on the verge of exploding, it's probably best to let your better judgment toss the coin that decides what to do about it.
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
~ Eleanor Roosevelt, This is My Story
The stuff that triggers anger and argument often has roots far below what it appears to be on the surface, and it is crucial to develop awareness about what is there. Therefore, the deeper question to ask yourself at the New Moon is: what is it about the trigger that stirs your ire? We all get annoyed or irate about things that go on around us, and it's easy to see the cause as something or someone "out there." However, there's usually some degree of truth in whatever got your goat.
No, it doesn't necessarily mean you really are the "stupid idiot" that someone on Facebook just hurled at you. But if that really gets under your skin and hangs around inside you like smog, it might indicate that there's a part of you deep down that's secretly afraid you really are a "stupid idiot." Your Inner Grown-up, of course, knows you're not that (or at least knows you're also capable of being an awesome angel), but the Inner Child might still reverberate with echoes of past humiliation, criticism or shame.
So: why does it matter so much to you? Why is it important enough that you are roused from a more placid frame of mind to feel the need to do something about it? This is not about second-guessing your feelings or judging them as being wrong or inappropriate. This is about learning the deeper truth about them, so you can freely decide what you want to do with or about them.
Here's the thing about this Sun-Moon Mars conjunction: the conjunctions to Mars have already passed; they're separating. This indicates (as I'm learning from the great Deborah Houlding, who is doing some awesome workshops here in Toronto this weekend through Astrology Toronto) that something new is happening that involves areas influenced by Mars. The fact that it involves a New Moon (which always signals a new beginning) further underscores this initiatory energy.
So, watch for fresh development in a number of possible areas. For example, you might put new ideas into action that have suddenly inspired you. Initiate a new personal policy about speaking your mind or taking a stand about something (doing this more, doing it less, or with a different kind of emphasis). Implement a plan of action built on the due diligence you've done since late April or early May. Start that novel, website, blog, article, lecture or course that you've been thinking about doing. Explore new ways to manage your anger; and so on.
Follow your inner moonlight; don't hide the madness.
~ Allen Ginsberg
Back to Mercury, who is the planetary ruler of Gemini and therefore the primary ruler of this New Moon (although Mars seems determined to be the heir to the throne should Mercury conveniently get eaten by a monster). Mercury is strongly placed in his own sign of Gemini, where he has been since Apr.30 as he did his retrograde boogie (May.18 to Jun.11). Now newly direct, but still in the retrograde Shadow until Jun.26, he's weaving together all the insights, observations, ideas and idioms he's been collecting along the way.
During his retrograde cycle over the last 6 weeks, Mercury has been getting strange, sometimes disturbing dreams from Neptune through a repeating square aspect (90°), which happens on May.09, May.29 and Jun.23. On one hand this has been a potentially creative energy, full of intuition and free-floating playful ideas. On the other hand, for anything requiring specific, precise or concrete results it may have felt a bit like trying to capture a cloud in a net.
Mercury is also opposite Saturn, who has just (Jun.14) tunnelled back into Scorpio until Sep.17. Mercury and Saturn were exactly opposite last May.03 (hence the reference above to late April and early May). When Mercury came back and stationed direct at 04:33 of Gemini (Jun.11), it was just over 4 degrees from opposing Saturn again – close, but no exploding cigar.
Now, at the Gemini New Moon, Mercury and Saturn are still within 5½ degrees of orb, so this latent energy is likely to influence the upcoming lunar cycle. For instance, back in early May you might have received unhappy news, struggled with a difficult decision, felt a bit depressed, or felt the weight of a decision to pursue a necessary goal. Now in June, just after Mercury's stationed Direct (Jun.11) and at the dawn of a New Moon in Mercury's sign, you might find it's the right time to figure out what to do about it all.
Speaking of Saturn, it is now in Scorpio, a Water sign, which brings another Air-Water connection to the Gemini New Moon. Saturn was in Scorpio from Oct.05.2012 to Dec.23.2014, and now returns there from Jun.14 to Sep.17.2015 to responsibly take out the trash, secure the windows, lock the doors, disconnect the phone and leave the key in the secret place (under the matt) for the next tenant.
So: what part of your life needs to be de-cluttered, reorganized and/or wrapped up over the next 3 months? What do you need to let go of or empty out, in order to make room for a fresh start later this year? (Later this year because that's when Saturn returns to Sagittarius.) With Saturn at the Scorpio helm, this is a good time to make your step-by-step final plan for deep-seated change and transformation that began back in late 2012-2014.
Lists! Mercury and Saturn are great at making lists! But along with lists of things to do, try making a list of:
These things might focus on your outer life activities (job, career planning, getting caught up on paying bills, official papers and government obligations—like taxes), or your inner life (like getting real about how you honestly feel about something that has felt like a burden, or coming to terms with something that has overwhelmed you).
These days I just can't seem to say what I mean [...]. I just can't. Every time I try to say something, it misses the point. Either that or I end up saying the opposite of what I mean. The more I try to get it right the more mixed up it gets. Sometimes I can't even remember what I was trying to say in the first place. It's like my body's split in two and one of me is chasing the other me around a big pillar. We're running circles around it.
The other me has the right words, but I can never catch her.
~ Haruki Murakami, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman: 24 Stories
Just when you think you're safe from the Trickster's games: Mercury has one more square to Neptune (90°). These two cross paths 3 times throughout Mercury's retrograde cycle: during the pre-retrograde Shadow (May.09), while retrograde (May.29), and in the post-retrograde Shadow (Jun.23). These past several weeks have seen one of the rockiest Mercury retrograde cycles I've ever seen. I think we can blame most of this on Mars (he's tough, he can handle it), but Neptune too has supplied more than his share of confusion, mix-ups, entanglements and he-said-she-said bull cookies.
Neptune has invoked a strong need to simply surrender to the Mercury Retrograde chaos that so many people have experienced over these past several weeks. (Not that I'd know anything about that, of course...) It has often been a real challenge to strike a balance between doing what can be done (or at least attempting to do it) and letting go of control over the outcome and allow everything to unfold as it will.
If you have the room in your life to be playful and experimental, then this crazy dreamtime can be fun and even illuminating. But if you've had to get concrete things done and arrive at specific results, this Mercury retrograde cycle has probably felt like head-banging time. So by now, you may have a whale of a headache (literally or metaphorically) ...or, you might have learned how to just float downstream, steering your canoe away from the rocks and through the rapids as best you can, and letting the Universe take care of the rest.
Mercury wades back into Neptunian waters over the next week or so for the final pass of the square aspect. And just to make things interesting, Neptune makes his retrograde station (Jun.12) the day after Mercury goes direct. That swirling sensation you feel is the effect of Neptune going one way (retrograde) while Mercury goes the other (direct), and to top it off they're in a stressful, dynamic aspect relationship with each other (square aspect). Are you having fun yet? ;-)
The essence of this energy is likely to be carried into the coming 4-week lunar cycle, so it's a good idea to get friendly with it. Set aside time to just be and keep your mind open to unusual insights, dreams and creative inspiration. But it's also wise to keep an eye out for deception, misconceptions, dishonesty and wishful thinking that clouds your ability to see things clearly.
Never be bullied into silence.
Never allow yourself to be made a victim.
Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.
~ Harvey Fierstein
Venus now enters the span of the Zodiac where she will go retrograde in about. This is similar to when Mercury enters the Shadow, except that we are now building up themes and energies related to Venus – beauty, art, balance, harmony, love, pleasure, desire, fairness, diplomacy, finances, possessions, values. As Venus approaches her retrograde station, you may notice increasing experiences and events that emphasise these areas.
For example, money and income could either increase or decrease during the Retrograde phase, and then often returns to its former state after Venus turns Direct again. Romantic possibilities may heat up during the Venus cycle, only to cool down again afterwards if there is no real substance to sustain it. Or, existing relationships might go through a period of confronting and sorting through issues or problems that have been lurking in the background. If the relationship is on shaky ground, this might push it to the breaking point, forcing you to do some serious renegotiating or consider ending it.
In this time of global economic struggle, this Venus retrograde cycle could lead you to rethink and recalibrate your financial motivations and ambitions on an individual level, as well as all of us collectively on national and global levels.
Here are the key dates of this Venus cycle (for North American Eastern Time):
Venus actually has fascinating retrograde cycle patterns that repeat over an 8 year period. Did you know that Venus will be retrograde only in certain signs within your lifetime? That's because of her long-term retrograde pattern. Anne Massey has written a terrific book called Venus: Her Cycles, Symbols & Myths (or click here for Amazon in Canada). It tells you everything you need to know about the complex patterns of Venus retrograde cycles and stations, as well as how these can manifest in your life. There is also information about the mythology of Venus and Venus-like figures. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about this intriguing planetary cycle.

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Cancer! When the Sun enters Cancer, it also marks the Summer Solstice (in North America, the UK, Europe and other places in the northern hemisphere; or the Winter Solstice in Australia and other places in the southern hemisphere). This is the time when we all get to cultivate and nurture the Cancer side of our nature. This includes feelings, needs and nurturing instincts, as well as your connection to home and family, and your most primal sense of belonging. To explore this area of your life, think about your family – are you closely connected to your family-of-origin (the one you grew up with), or do you also have a "chosen family" in adulthood? Who is part of your support system (the people you know you can turn to when you need them)? What people, groups, places or experiences satisfy your need for belonging, which everyone has inside them? Cancer is about our distant past (childhood, ancestry, memories) that influences our current behaviour, motives and methods of getting our emotional needs met. Take this time to find new ways to nurture yourself, to share that nurturing with others, and to ensure that you don't give to others at the expense of not getting what you need.
Insight, ideas and inspiration characterise this transit. It is an excellent time to break free of old outmoded beliefs and judgments, which can make room for new perspectives, opinions and wisdom. Innovative ideas come together within an expanded context that gives them new meaning. You can breathe fresh air into your spiritual beliefs and opinions by taking an open-minded approach and trying on new ideas. Unexpected, unusual or "lucky" opportunities may arise that allow you to get out of old ruts and advance toward future possibilities. If you have been feeling stuck in your quest to gain truth, understanding, spirituality or meaning, this transit could bring a release that allows you to get past your resistance. However, even "good" aspects have their drawbacks and this is no exception. It can be tempting to sit back and allow the opportunities to come to you, but not follow through on them—being all ideas and no sustained action. Your behaviour could be somewhat erratic and unpredictable, as your direction may shift and change with every new possibility that presents itself. This transit's greater agenda is to open the door for you to stretch beyond your known horizons and touch the edge of the Universal Mind.
Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.
The retrograde station can be felt for up to a week before and after this date. Since Chiron is often about health, you may find health issues coming to the foreground now. General issues about wounding, healing and hurt—physically, psychologically and/or spiritually—may come to a turning point now, making it necessary to take some time for healing, reconstruction, and reconciliation of the energies that are out of balance in your life. The retrograde station (now) begins this process, which gradually unfolds over the next 5 months. Focus your energies on acknowledging the areas that need healing in your life—literally or figuratively. Don't forget that although there are areas that still need healing, you have made progress on much of this in the past. It's important to balance your acknowledgement of the work yet to be done with recognition of what you have already achieved in the past.
The fiery energy of Mars is poured through the sensitive, emotional waters of Cancer. This is not the easiest placement for Mars, since its sharp edge becomes somewhat softened and diluted. However, this is also a time when it is possible to use your assertive and proactive energy for the protection of yourself or others. This is like the mother bear that can become extremely fierce when protecting her young, and in the same way you have an abundance of energy to defend your "children" – literally or figuratively, in the sense of creative projects, loved ones, your Inner Child, or your home "nest." This is also a time when deep emotional issues may erupt to the surface, like buried anger, repressed frustration or unconscious fear. The focus of your feelings may be a little unstable and moody, but it also gives you an opportunity to nurture, vent and express those feelings. Observe how you respond to any deep feelings that emerge, either in yourself or in others. Does your Inner Parent try to repress or scold that Inner Child, or are you able to respond lovingly, caringly and sensitively? This is a learning experience that can teach you how to nurture yourself ...and others.
Mercury finally leaves the shadow—the part of the zodiac where it was retrograde. This means the confusion, delays and miscommunications of the last 2 months have mostly dissipated and things should be more or less back to normal (whatever that is). The difference is that you now have the benefit of seeing things from a different perspective after having reconsidered, rethought and rehashed information and perceptions over the past 2 months. This gives you more choices than you had before. In fact, you may find that although you thought something was a good idea a month or two ago, you now realize that a different approach, decision or way of understanding it is better. If you've been waiting until Mercury finished with the retrograde cycle before you made a final decision about something or taking action on something, this is the time to take another look at whatever that is. Just don't forget your common sense, and remember that Mercury is only one factor to take into consideration regarding the timing of a decision. Use your best judgment and wisdom.
When the Sun squares the Lunar Nodes, your sense of purpose and identity appear to be in conflict with the lessons you need to learn in life. It may feel like you're forced to take a detour around your direct route to your destination (whatever that might be). This may only be true on the surface – if you look deeper at the situation (or possibly in retrospect), you'll probably find that your sense of self is actually helped by the benefits that you are able to get on that detour, which would have missed if you hadn't been diverted from your original path.
Alternatively, you might be confronted by a conflict or stressful dilemma that you usually resist or flail against. This may be an opportunity to explore a deeper level of your experience and feelings. Perhaps there is fear or resentment or defiance behind your reaction. This is a chance to try on a different perspective and respond in a different way that can help you move through the situation instead of just being blocked by it.
When the Sun squares the Nodes it is sometimes called "Moon Wobbles," which is a bit of a misnomer. The Moon itself doesn't wobble or even necessarily interact directly with either the Nodes or the Sun. Rather, the Moon part of us (the inner, feeling, intuitive, sensitive part of us) may feel a bit "wobbly" or unsteady when the Sun squares the Nodes. The "Moon Wobble" effects are said to build and dissipate for up to 10 days before and after the Sun-Node square is exact.
Spontaneity and liberation burst into your relationships, finances, resources and pleasures. You might feel compelled to try something completely different that shakes up the "same-old-same-old" routines you're used to. The upside is that you have the opportunity to break free of some old habits and breathe some fresh air into your life. But the downside could come in the form of impulse spending beyond your budget, or recklessness in your interactions and relationships. Strive to break free of what holds you back from being your true self, without destroying the structure of order in your life.
Romance is in the air, harmony is reflected in everything around you, and love and beauty abound! This can be a time of sweet mercy, pleasure and peace, both personally and in relationships. It can also be a time when your ability to attract money, resources and rewards into your life are especially strong. You might consider indulging in a lottery ticket! Or maybe treating yourself to some creature comforts, like a massage or a double chocolate brownie or anything that gets the endorphins flowing! Unfortunately, this can also be a time when you are prone to over-indulge in pleasures or overestimate your resources. By all means enjoy this lovely feel-good energy, but it's also wise to keep your "addictions" in check. Don't entirely disregard your diet, your budget or your realism in relationships.
Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.
For a week or so, it might feel like the actions you must take to deal with current circumstances are at cross purposes to what you see as your higher purpose or optimal direction in life. You might feel at odds with others, or in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the other hand, this can be a time when being forced to take a temporary "detour" off your chosen path can bring an opportunity to gather new resources, information or insight that can actually help you more, in the long run, than if you had stayed on the main path. However, there's never any one way to experience a given transit. The question becomes: is veering off the main path something that enables you to avoid something you should be facing? Or is does this detour bring you to a new perspective or resources that you are resisting because it's off the main path? Either way, it's a good idea to balance your impulses and passions with mindful awareness.
