Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.
Can you always believe your eyes and ears? Can you trust what your heart and mind perceive?
What measuring stick do you use when assessing if something is real? Valuable? Honourable? Fair?
What helps you feel good, contented, tranquil and gratified? How do you handle it when something disrupts that enjoyment?
This New Moon in Gemini puts your perceptions, assumptions, projections and values to the test. You may be challenged to defend what is important to you or even change your mind about some things.
It takes less time to do a thing right
than to explain why you did it wrong.
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The New Moon chart is dominated by the Mutable Grand Cross aspect pattern, which began in mid-April as a T-square. This configuration features Jupiter opposite Neptune (180°) across the Lunar Nodal axis. Mars and Saturn have been taking turns being the apex planet that squares (90°) both sides of that opposition. (Try to capture the visual of impulsive Mars and authoritarian Saturn "taking turns"...)
At the moment, it's Saturn's turn. Saturn just passed the opposition to the Sun (Jun.03), marking the halfway point in his retrograde journey (Mar.25 to Aug.13). The Sun-Saturn opposition makes Saturn's realm clearer and more visible, which may be welcome ...or not. Much depends on how you get along with Saturn. Sure he can be a pain in your backside, but he's not always the bad guy we see him as.
In this case, Saturn might be a bitter pill but it could also help you find the discipline to gather your ducks and get them aligned in a row. With Saturn being in Sagittarius, that pill may be the condensed outcome of a broad spectrum of knowledge, principles and wisdom that comes from experience.
If the structure does not permit dialogue
the structure must be changed.
~ Paulo Freire
On the other side of the universe from Saturn (in more ways than one) are the Sun and Moon in Gemini. The New Moon in the sign of the Twins is about gathering, expressing and delighting in information. Our natural curiosity becomes focused and developed in Gemini, as our minds play with words, perceptions, ideas and thoughts that progress from each one to the next. The best way to satisfy Gemini's hunger for information is to feed it lots of food for thought.
Having a New Moon cycle that pushes off in Gemini means the next 4 weeks have an underlying theme of encountering fresh ideas, recycling old ones and finding various ways to express and convey them to others and to ourselves.
To ourselves? Absolutely! As we think about things, the Gemini part of us is constantly rehashing and filtering thoughts, making connections and exploring different ways to view our experiences. We try on new ideas to see if they fit our worldview and if they don't, we need to decide if we should adjust our view or reject the idea as invalid or unworkable.
Saturn stares down from across the zodiac at the Sun and Moon, declaring that while it's important and necessary to expand one's world view, we also need to make sure it passes the acid test of scrutiny, critique and reason.
Luckily Mercury, the planetary ruler of Gemini, is currently in a sign that understands Saturn's mandate for logic, methodology and practicality. In Earth sign Taurus, Mercury might not be soaring through information and ideas like the twin engine plane he prefers to be, but he gets to the point in his own good time.
So when Saturn tells the Gemini Sun and Moon to slow down and be more discriminating about whether and how those brainwaves mesh with the established way of looking at things, Mercury "gets it" and gets on the phone to give them some practical tips and common sense.
The brain appears to possess a special area which we might call poetic memory and which records everything that charms or touches us, that makes our lives beautiful.
~ Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Keeping the Sun and Moon company in Gemini is Venus. All three of them are squished into the same degree (14° Gemini). In fact, they're so close they're practically reading each other's minds!
Venus is humming a little song about the value of ideas and words, and how they can be used as very profitable currency to make quality connections. Just schmooze up the person with charm and receptivity and then sit back and just listen. Keep the momentum going by asking the occasional question or inserting cues that you're still tuned in. ("Uh-huh..." "Mm-hmm..." "Yes, that's so interesting...") Easy peasy.
Venus is in Mercury's sign of Gemini, and Mercury is in Venus' sign of Taurus, so they are in Mutual Reception. Since they mirror their energies, they understand each other and can speak each other's language. While Venus is offering the Sun and Moon tips and tricks on how to entice with conversation and attention, Mercury is happy to serve up the perfect words that articulate pleasure, well-being and gratification.
Venus is in a very significant part of her cycle with the Sun. She is approaching the Superior Conjunction, when Venus is Direct and conjunct the Sun. During this time she is farthest away from the Earth (apogee) on the other side of the Sun from us. Since Venus is about how we relate to and interact with others, this distance suggests that our style of relating may be less about reaching out to connect with others and more about connecting with ourselves through introspection.
Currently moving at her fastest direct-motion speed, this is not a Venus who lingers or languishes but who glides quickly through whatever she embraces. This is a more objective and detached Venus who may skip lightly across interactions like a stone across the water, dipping in just enough to get what she's looking for and then on to the next idea or conversation.
Since Venus is in Gemini and conjunct the New Moon, there may be an unusually high capacity to make new social connections, exchange ideas and form useful alliances with others of like mind—or even of different mind! In fact, you might need to stay on your toes to keep up with all the opportunities and encounters that could come your way. Be sure to leave yourself time to process the information, insights and experiences by seeing how they do or don't integrate well into your current understanding.
(Many of these Venus ideas are inspired by Adam Gainsburg's fabulous book on the Venus-Sun cycle: The Light of Venus. Highly recommended!)
It wasn't enough to just want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em. And if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own backyard; because if it isn't there,
I never really lost it to begin with.
~ L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Back to that Mutable Grand Cross. At crossed purposes to Saturn, Sun, Moon and Venus are Jupiter and Neptune who oppose each other. These two rulers of Pisces (Jupiter is the traditional ruler; Neptune the modern ruler) face off across the Virgo-Pisces axis.
Jupiter in Virgo seeks devotion to practical service in a quest to become immersed in Universal Oneness. This Jupiter says if you can't find freedom of spirit in anything and everything you are doing, then you're missing an essential part of existence in the space-time continuum.
This is the "chop wood, carry water" approach to life. If you're really connected to something greater than yourself, it doesn't much matter whether you're meditating on a mountaintop or cleaning out toilets. It's not about what you're doing, it's about how you are doing it on the inside. The trick is not to become so focused on the mechanics of what you're doing that you lose touch with the greater purpose of why you're doing it.
Neptune in Pisces prefers to go straight to The Source. Why limit yourself to the mediating physical world when you could submit directly to the vast nothingness and everythingness of Spirit? At least, that's what Neptune hopes could happen. The problem is that while we're still in that space-time realm, we must deal with the demands of the physical world or we won't exist in it for much longer.
I don't understand why things always go from perfect to weird with us.
It's like we're incapable of normal human interaction.
~ Stephanie Perkins, Anna and the French Kiss
With Saturn squaring both Jupiter and Neptune right now, it puts more weight on the necessity of paying homage to that physical world. (Read my article on Saturn and Neptune.)
True, trying to squeeze the vastness of Jupiter and Neptune into the stern specifics of corporeal existence means limitation. The glowing aura around Piscean visions loses some of its lustre, and the bliss of warm, fuzzy perfection tends to get rubbed off in the process. However, the benefit it brings to us here in the manifest realm is essential to the human psyche and can't be found any other way.
As much as this sounds like a happy ending to a difficult story, here's where this process gets complicated. With both Jupiter and Neptune, it's hard to be sure if you're dealing with something real, or if you're projecting your own version of reality onto clouds of wishful thinking. Although this might seem like merely a philosophical dilemma rather than a true problem, it becomes important if you need to rely on verifiable results—like making sure you have money to pay your rent or mortgage, or gauging whether that snake oil really will cure what ails you.
With Neptune there's always a risk of confusing fantasy for reality. Too much Neptune could cloud your judgment about whether to trust someone, whether a risk is has a good chance of succeeding or whether you really have the resources, discipline and persistence to take a possibility and turn it into an actuality.
In the case of Jupiter there is always the temptation to aggrandize, exaggerate or overestimate. It helps to keep your balance by honestly questioning the validity, authenticity and sincerity of your assumptions. It is also useful to explore how much you may be invested in the answer that your judgment might be a bit distorted.
There should be more sincerity and heart in human relations, more silence and simplicity in our interactions. Be rude when you’re angry, laugh when something is funny, and answer when you’re asked.
~ Anton Chekhov
All of this dynamic energy is brought to bear on the cozy little clique in Gemini: Sun, Moon and Venus. This is the perfect time to raise your awareness of the Jupiter-Saturn-Neptune issues and how they are influencing your life. As already mentioned, Saturn is giving them the hairy eyeball of stern caution about making sure their Gemini playfulness is also useful and grounded.
Jupiter and Neptune contribute a big question mark about whether the result of that Saturnian discipline and scrutiny is meaningful. Does it speak to a perspective and purpose that can transcend the drab, mundane, hollow existence resulting from too much Saturn?
Both Jupiter and Neptune argue that making something work is one thing but you also need to make it meaningful. Without a broader vision of why you're doing something and what it means to you, the human spirit starts to wither.
This isn't (necessarily) about a belief in God or anything that might exist beyond the world of the 5 senses, but it is about feeding our human need to have a greater sense of meaning and purpose in our lives, whatever that is.
This puts a challenge before the Gemini New Moon: it's not enough to simply play with ideas, make connections and follow your curiosity. And it's not enough to gather information for its own sake. These tasks need to be the means to a greater end; a path that leads beyond your immediate concerns.
This is a time when potential abounds, if we but reach out for it. Use your curiosity to find out what that is for you. Connect with your inner sense of well-being and explore new ways to manifest that outside of yourself. It doesn't have to be huge sweeping gestures. Even a small practical action that is framed in a context of the greater good (your own or others') could have implications far beyond the immediate situation.
If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the ripple effects. And if you really pay attention, you'll catch the ripples as they come back to you.
Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.
Since this Mutable Grand Cross features so prominently at the Gemini New Moon, I'm repeating the information about it here from the last update (Full Moon in Sagittarius #1).
There has been a Jupiter-Neptune-Saturn T-square aspect pattern hovering overhead for a few months, and has been at its tightest lately (May.23). This Mutable T-square has been making things especially slippery, malleable and erratic that you probably have fervently wished would be more constant, consistent and forward moving.
From May.29 to around Jun.08, this T-square gains extra focus as the Sun and Venus move into the empty corner of the T-square to form a Grand Cross aspect pattern. The whole Cross figure is closest from June 1-4.
That focus could feel like a blessing or a conundrum, or maybe a bit of both. It could bring all that chaotic ambiguity into crystal clear focus and make you nuts! Or, it could allow you to step into the maelstrom and surf through it.
The Sun being one of the occupants of the extra corner means there is added vitality and well-being, which can give more will power, determination and motivation to get past the chaos. Being in Gemini, you also may experience illumination of ideas and awareness, and feel the urge to articulate or express these. Venus is tightly conjunct the Sun during this time, and in fact the Sun and Venus make their exact conjunction while in this Grand Cross (Jun.06). Venus in Gemini adds the ability to express that dynamic Cross energy with words, movements, creativity and poise.
The fact that the Sun-Venus pair is involved in a stressful, dynamic aspect pattern means that all that good stuff – vitality, well-being, grace, style and communication – will first need to climb over obstacles and wrestle with conflict on their way out into the world. It may take some interaction with friends, co-workers, neighbours or other people in your immediate surroundings in order to pull out those words and creative juices.
The take-away from this is that if you find yourself in the middle of continual commotion, your best bet is to stay curious and interested, and move forward through it by reaching out for the next step. This could feel like crossing a fast-moving stream by stepping carefully on one rock after another. There's a very delicate balance that can get you across quickly – you don't rush and you don't become overly cautious. Not all the rocks are stable and some might make you feel like you're about to go head first into the water, but the trick is to get into a rhythm with it and trust your instinctive motion. Stay awake and aware and mindful.
From June 5-7th (6-8th in AU), Venus will be Cazimi which usually strengthens that planetary energy. It's a time when you can embrace your interactions, social connections and resources. Your sense of balance will most likely be found through rhythmic, perpetual motion that adapts quickly and intuitively to the changing situation.
Your ability to radiate an aura of love, pleasure and beauty is very strong right now. You have the ability to soothe the rough edges – both your own and others' – and to spread joy and love around you. You are more able to come across in a diplomatic, gentle and easy-going way. This can also enable you to glide through tricky interactions with others with strategic finesse, as well as to negotiate through difficult conflicts with ease (at least, relatively speaking). Your ability to attract your heart's desire to you is especially strong right now...so be careful what you ask for! This is a good time to take a look at your choices, to see how much you are living according to your values and how much your values bring joy and satisfaction into your life. Relationships may also be on your mind, either looking for someone new in your life or rekindling an existing one. This could apply to committed intimate relationships, business partnerships or close friendships. Your focus could be pointed at acquiring material abundance, gathering resources or cultivating self-worth. You are as beautiful and as prosperous as you feel!
When a planet is conjunct the Sun within 17 minutes of arc, it is called Cazimi, meaning "in the heart of the Sun." Venus is Cazimi for over 48 hours, from 15GE35 to 17GE35:
~ Ottawa, Washington DC: Jun.05, 4:48 PM EDT to Jun.07, 6:49 PM EDT
~ London UK: Jun.05, 9:48 PM BST to Jun.07, 11:49 PM BST
~ Sydney AU: Jun.06, 7:48 AM AEST to Jun.08, 8:49 AM AEST
Perhaps you're finding that the people in your life are not being as supportive, encouraging or cooperative as you thought they would be, in terms of helping you fulfil your life purpose. Someone might suddenly withdraw their support, or maybe they contradict or interfere with what you're trying to do with your life. Perhaps an argument or disagreement happens and the upset, stress or hard feelings that result seem to cast a shadow on how you feel about your life. If this happens, it's possible that what you disagree about is something you should look at more closely. Are you responding to this situation in a way that truly reflects your values? Or perhaps your values need to be reconsidered. The agreement or balance of priorities between you might need to be renegotiated. This transit might also manifest as problems around finances or possessions, which requires some adjustment on your part. Since this transit usually lasts only a few days, in most cases its effects will not be major. If it does bring up some significant issues, it is probably hinting at a deeper issue, and you would be wise to look at the problem beyond the current circumstances. Other transits (especially to your natal chart) can give you more information about the nature of the situation.
When the Sun squares the Lunar Nodes, your sense of purpose and identity appear to be in conflict with the lessons you need to learn in life. It may feel like you're forced to take a detour around your direct route to your destination (whatever that might be). This may only be true on the surface – if you look deeper at the situation (or possibly in retrospect), you'll probably find that your sense of self is actually helped by the benefits that you are able to get on that detour, which would have missed if you hadn't been diverted from your original path.
Alternatively, you might be confronted by a conflict or stressful dilemma that you usually resist or flail against. This may be an opportunity to explore a deeper level of your experience and feelings. Perhaps there is fear or resentment or defiance behind your reaction. This is a chance to try on a different perspective and respond in a different way that can help you move through the situation instead of just being blocked by it.
When the Sun squares the Nodes it is sometimes called "Moon Wobbles," which is a bit of a misnomer. The Moon itself doesn't wobble or even necessarily interact directly with either the Nodes or the Sun. Rather, the Moon part of us (the inner, feeling, intuitive, sensitive part of us) may feel a bit "wobbly" or unsteady when the Sun squares the Nodes. The "Moon Wobble" effects are said to build and dissipate for up to 10 days before and after the Sun-Node square is exact.
Mercury finally leaves the shadow—the part of the zodiac where it was retrograde. This means the confusion, delays and miscommunications of the last 2 months have mostly dissipated and things should be more or less back to normal (whatever that is). The difference is that you now have the benefit of seeing things from a different perspective after having reconsidered, rethought and rehashed information and perceptions over the past 2 months. This gives you more choices than you had before. In fact, you may find that although you thought something was a good idea a month or two ago, you now realize that a different approach, decision or way of understanding it is better. If you've been waiting until Mercury finished with the retrograde cycle before you made a final decision about something or taking action on something, this is the time to take another look at whatever that is. Just don't forget your common sense, and remember that Mercury is only one factor to take into consideration regarding the timing of a decision. Use your best judgment and wisdom.
Your mental focus and communication could get an injection of healing energy under this transit, as long as you are prepared to put some effort into getting it. Your spirits can become uplifted now, from seeing a light at the end of the tunnel or from finding a light that guides you along the path in front of you. It will not, however, make the tunnel or the path go away; you'll still have to walk the walk. But your mental perspective can become more accepting of inconsistencies and frustrations under this transit, which can alleviate a lot of stress and make the journey a bit smoother. Mental struggles and critical "self-talk" may find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings peace of mind. You have an increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems, by providing insightful feedback. To get the most out of this transit, aim to find a mental outlook and communication style that can tolerate contradiction without having to eradicate one in order to justify the other.
For a week or two before and after today, you might find that what you do has more transformation effect than usual. You may be called on to face some difficult truth about yourself or someone else, and working intimately with that calling could transform the problem and its effect on you. It is a time when your ability to hang in there through a demanding situation is stronger than usual. The down side is that it can sometimes be tricky to tell the difference between passionate concentration and unhealthy obsession. This transit could amplify either quality. So it might be all too easy to become fixated on something or someone in a way that may not be in your best interest (or theirs). The up side to this transit is that by maintaining your focus on a problem to be solved or a wound that needs healing or a situation that you're usually tempted to escape from, your sustained attention can help you make progress along your path.
Due to the wobble of the True Lunar Nodes, Pluto and the North Node make 3 passes of this trine aspect: Jun.09, Jun.12 and Jun.14. The effects of this transit are likely to be especially powerful for about a week through these dates. However, the Pluto trine Node energy has been with us for a while now – how long depends on how wide you measure the aspect orb. Within one degree: May.26 to Jun.21. Three degrees: May.05 to Oct.16. Eight degrees: Jan.20 to Nov.28!
You may have felt the Pluto-Node trine especially when Jupiter was conjunct the North Node, in January and February of this year. They will be conjunct again all through June, with Jupiter exactly conjunct the Node on Jun.20 and trine Pluto on Jun.26.
The net effect could be that you cross paths with someone who has a powerfully enlightening influence, full of wisdom and inner strength. Or, you might put out this kind of energy to others who see these qualities in you. This might also refer to people who can help you decide how best to invest your finances, resources, energy and focus.
Remember that trines usually come with a bit of a warning label not to go with the flow so blindly that you forget to use your best judgment when choosing when and how to act and react in these situations.
Fiery speech, argument, hot debate and impatience characterise this transit. You may encounter conflicts of interest with others and want to solve them NOW, but in your haste to find a quick fix, you could create more problems than you solve. On the other hand, it can be a time of sudden or impulsive decisions, as well as taking action on ideas you've been mulling over for a while. There is a strong tendency to say what's on your mind ...perhaps more abruptly or harshly than is wise, which could result in argument, overreaction and hurt feelings. Although argument can clear the air and be healing, it can also wound those involved and create ill will that lasts far beyond the original problem. This energy is potentially powerful, yet volatile. It can be used to pump up your motivational fire ...or to explode in hurtful anger. It is like a race horse that can achieve great things when carefully paced, but can be dangerous if allowed to run out of control.
Venus goes Out of Bounds (OOB), which could affect your relationships, love life, finances, possessions and your sense of harmony, both within yourself and with the world around you. When it works well, you could gain unique or unusual insights and ideas about these areas, although getting these to work in the everyday world is something else again. When it's not working so well, those areas could become a problem due to unrealistic, outlandish or counterproductive attempts to push beyond familiar territory.
For example, you might become more adventurous, unconventional or undisciplined when it comes to friendships, amorous relationships or finances. If you have unspoken, unacknowledged or unconscious yearnings for "something different," this can be the time when those desires break free and make a run for it! This could be a positive thing, in that it gives your relationship or your wallet some breathing space and expands your range of experience. On the other hand, those yearnings could lead to upheavals and disruptions, like hastening the end of a relationship, or spending beyond your budget on something that turns out to be more whimsy than workable. This can be especially true if these areas are already struggling or hanging by a thread. It might help to get a reality check from someone you trust, or at least have your eyes wide open as you embark on your flight of fancy.
The healing of assertive energy and willpower mark this transit. It is bound to be easier to get past any inhibition you might normally feel about being assertive, expressing frustration and anger, and putting things into action. Perhaps you are able to reconcile some internal guilt or fear that has held you back in the past. Or, maybe you are finally able to reach a state of acceptance or resolution that allows you to move beyond a conflict or struggle that has been keeping you stuck. Applying your willpower to problems has a better chance of succeeding now because you're likely to be more attuned to the path that leads to peace rather than more conflict. It's possible you might choose to use this energy in the defence of another person, a cause or something else you feel passionately about. It's possible to focus your energy, intent, motives and actions in ways that are healing, healthy, balanced and constructive.
Relationships, finances, resources and pleasures could benefit from spontaneously trying a completely different approach. If these areas of your life have been getting a little stale or too routine, this transit could shake things up a little...just enough to make things interesting and breathe some fresh air into your familiar routine. Unexpected income could come your way, or you might discover something you just can't resist buying, or you might have an opportunity to make new social connections. The upside of this transit is that it's possible to break free of old habits and enjoy spontaneous interaction. The downside could come in the form of impulse purchases that are beyond your budget, or behaving a bit recklessly or making snap decisions that you can't live with later. This energy is best used to break free of what restricts you, without shattering the foundation you're standing on.
Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini, so the mind wants to fly fast and free. Communication and perceptions may come and go like a fresh breeze through an open window. This can create a wide variety of ideas but not necessarily productive application of those ideas. You might find it a little easier to articulate words, sharpen your mental focus, and collect and analyze your thoughts and information. This can give wings to your ideas and self-expression, but remember that you'll have to back up any promises and "fast talk" with action and substance. Let this be a time to explore possibilities and enjoy social interaction, rather than jump to final conclusions. Collect the raw data and exchange ideas, but be aware that understanding the broader meaning will likely come later.
For up to a week before and after this date, you may feel a thick concentration of Neptune energy. This could include vivid dreams and imagination, foggy confusion or fluid intuition. You might experience unusual sensitivity to the people and situations around you. The station could create a turning point in situations that have unfolded over the last few months, especially those in which you need to surrender to something greater than yourself, whether that is the creative process, a stressful situation or the Universe in general. This can be a time when you come to an internal acceptance (or resignation) about what needs to be done in your life. As a result, you might feel a sense of longing, dissatisfaction, disappointment, sadness, depression, fatigue or low energy. Or, you might feel a sense of unburdening relief, inspiration, hopeful possibilities or deep beauty. The next 5-6 months will be a time to probe the spaces in between the facts and the uncertainties – to learn about that force greater than yourself, as well as the (unconscious) part of yourself that longs to merge with it.
This Neptune station will probably be especially noticeable, since Saturn squares Neptune in just 4 days, at the same degree and minute where Neptune is stationing now! As a result, this can increase the frustration factor, since Neptune's ambiguity, creativity, spirituality and inspiration will likely need to be tempered or contained by Saturn's realism, clarity, practicality and down-to-earth approach to life here in the space-time continuum. Neptune is more powerful than usual, being stationary, so this will likely make it harder to comply with Saturn's mandate.
On the other hand, this could be an extremely productive time for anything that requires or benefits from inspiration, fantasy, imagination, creativity or surrender. For example, music, art and dance can be very effective to create or blissful to enjoy, since these are about taking the dreams of Neptune and manifesting them as something real or concrete. The key that unlocks this door is that you will have to work hard at whatever you're doing, and be willing to allow the rational and non-rational to shape each other and work cooperatively.
For more insight about working with these two very different energies, read my article about Saturn and Neptune.
You may be forced to make adjustments to relationships and/or finances now, as you face situations in these areas that just don't want to balance out the way you want them to. You may feel a bit like you're in a catch-22 (no-win situation), where the more you try to find balance and harmony, the more you feel like you're chasing your own tail around in circles. This is a time when healing in relationships and financial problems may be difficult to obtain. Harmony in these areas can seem impossible or blocked, yet it is still necessary to keep trying. By trying anyway, it may be possible to find a solution that meets your needs, even if it may not be what you wanted, hoped for or expected. Strive to find a creative solution that draws on your best side.
You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are more finely tuned during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Just have fun pushing the envelope! You may also find you want things to be spontaneous and new and out-of-the-ordinary so much that it's hard not to feel restless and dissatisfied with ordinary life right now. But remember that trying to plan spontaneity defeats the purpose of the exercise. And if you are hungering for something new but can't seem to find something satisfying, try digging a little deeper to see what is driving that hunger from inside you. You could find surprising answers.
Your self-confidence and patience may be a bit strained right now, stretched by the urge to break free of chronic constraints. Motivation and self-esteem may seem to sag and suffer from old problems that you thought were resolved. This is probably because you are seeing "the flaws in the system" that are preventing you from getting the results you want. It will help to take a fresh approach to your situation. You may need to let go of what you think the results "should be" or how they should come to you. Be open to getting what you want in a different form than you were expecting. You may have to work extra hard for results now, especially if it means having to find a different route to success. If it seems like a door of opportunity has closed, look for an unexpected advantage or hidden alternative. This could allow you to tap into other opportunities that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.
Your focus in relationships may shift for a while to family, loved ones and people in your support system. You may also find that your interactions with others takes on a quality that echoes the past, perhaps childhood, and you want to reach out to connect with others more than usual – or to avoid it if those echoes are not pleasant ones. You could be especially sensitive to getting your emotional needs met, or how others want their needs to be met. Interactions with others may bring up a deep need to belong and to connect and bond with others on a personal level. The need to feel secure and safe could come up in a variety of forms now – either directly as a feeling of vulnerability, or indirectly disguised as defensiveness or manipulation. This could also a time when you want to be somewhat protective and cautious in your handling of money, possessions and other resources, striving to conserve and cultivate these areas in order to nurture them for future growth.
Saturn and Neptune mix together like oil and water. Saturn is the physical, manifest world that has limits, boundaries and rules. Neptune emanates from the world of fantasy, imagination, deception and illusion. Not exactly an easy marriage. With these two planets in a stressful yet dynamic square aspect (90°), they are likely to go through some major arguments before coming to a resolution.
Saturn's "get real" mandate could strip away Neptune's fuzzy aura, leaving you feeling like winter suddenly set in with a brisk chill. The usual tactics for dealing with stress and hardship by envisioning a better day might not work very well. It may be important to deal directly with the problem and not rely as much on soothing activities.
On the other hand, reaching for some comfort food or a glass of wine or buying that magnificent painting you happened to find aren't necessarily bad. It's when they become obsessive or you use them to avoid dealing with the real issues that they can create more problems than they solve. For example: excessive alcohol or drugs, impulse spending, heavy gambling, emotional eating and so on.
You might find you're in the middle of a battle between discipline and responsible decision-making versus wanting to let go of the inhibition and melt down your walls of resistance. Depending on your situation, you might benefit from leaning a bit more in either direction.
The thing to remember is that both sides of the battle represent different parts of you, and each part of you is trying to create change that is believed to be in your best interest. Therefore, finding new ways to solve the dilemma can help to calm the argument between them. The square is dynamic as well as conflict oriented, so try on new ideas or repurposing old solutions. Solutions involving creativity and beauty, as well as being grounded and realistic, can help to satisfy both parts of you.
The last Saturn-Neptune square was in 1998-1999.
