Everything is gestation and then bringing forth.
~ Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
Virgo is a decidedly feminine sign, being symbolized by the archetypal maiden. In the Northern Hemisphere the Full Moon in Virgo happens in the spring (when crops are about to be planted), and the New Moon in Virgo happens in the fall (when crops are beginning to be harvested). In the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are reversed but the symbolism is the same. So the Virgo maiden is about fertility and its changing seasons – in other words, about growth and the change that comes with it.
"But what about men?" you might ask. Men can be born under the sign of Virgo, or have Virgo prominent in their charts. They also have a Venus and a Moon in their charts, which represent female energy. Feminine energy is therefore about a quality of the human psyche, more than about a physical gender.
The question of what is female versus male energy is a much bigger topic of discussion, but for our purposes let's say that feminine energy is receptive, holding, transforming and regenerative. In particular, Virgo energy is about planting seeds and harvesting the outcome – starting something new to grow and reaping the results.
I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass.
The Full Moon chart shows that the Sun is conjunct the asteroid Pallas-Athena, who has a lot to do with the empowered feminine. Birthed directly from the head of Zeus and fully armed, she is quite the yang feminine figure. No demure sweetness-and-light is she, but a warrior goddess. You don't mess with her! And yet, she is no screaming banshee either, but is known for her wisdom and craft skills.
This seems to be a common theme in the Full Moon chart. Venus is currently retrograde in Aries, which brings an image of the empowered feminine. The fact that she is retrograde suggests that there is a re-evaluation going on around what it means for feminine energy to be empowered and what feminine energy actually is. Surely it is not the "dumb blonde" stereotype that still lingers in Western culture, but does that mean it necessarily must be the other extreme of the shrieking bitch?
Under Venus retrograde, we may find that expression of feminine energy is a bit unpredictable or erratic, as we (individually or within the Collective) attempt to adjust where that balance point between the extremes should be during present times. And with Venus in combative Aries, it is likely a time when the feminine in all of us is struggling to find a better position of empowerment.
Love isn't something natural. Rather it requires discipline, concentration, patience, faith, and the overcoming of narcissism. It isn't a feeling, it is a practice.
~ Erich Fromm, The Art of Loving
Virgo is ruled by Mercury, which is currently in a stressful square aspect to Saturn (90°). Saturn tends to limit or make demands of whatever it touches. Mercury typically represents our communication and thoughts, which may need to be a bit more careful or disciplined in how we word things, our tone of voice and the context of how we talk about things. It also suggests that there could be difficult consequences if we let our thoughts run away into too much speculation, assumptions or ungrounded conclusions.
The Virgo side of Mercury is associated with the organization of information and fine-tuning our actions to make them more efficient and effective. With Mercury squished by Saturn (putting the "sat" in Saturn, as it were...) this is a good time to bring your living space and your schedule into better order—and in fact, your circumstances might make necessary to do this or else find yourself limited by the consequences of inefficiency.
On the other hand, Mercury is in currently in Pisces. Mercury has a hard time in Pisces, since his natural inclination prefers to be logical, clear and outwardly interactive, but in Pisces he must be fluent in the languages of intuition, imagination, ambiguity and inner silence. Mind you, Mercury can do this very well, but it's not his "first language" so to speak.
Therefore, you might be faced with a need to be precise, disciplined, clear and effective at a time when it's much easier to be the opposite. It could leave you feeling like you've failed or that you're just being lazy or not trying hard enough. Watch the tendency to beat yourself up! It's one thing to get stern with yourself to make your efforts more effective, but judging yourself is only likely to make you feel bad about yourself...which usually doesn't help.
We are the seeds of the tenacious plant, and it is in our ripeness and our fullness of heart that we are given to the wind and are scattered.
~ Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
Surprisingly, Pluto turns out to be the good guy, since he is in an encouraging, easy-flowing trine aspect to the Moon and sextile to the Sun. This suggests that the ability to tap into empowering energy is more available than you might think. What can help is believing in your ability to do what needs to be done and doing it effectively. If the mountain in front of you feels too steep to climb, it's possible that your efforts can simply be "good enough." It doesn't have to be 100% perfect.
Still, Pluto is no fluffy toy and is not to be underestimated. But what Pluto values is authenticity, and to be authentic you have to start with honesty—with yourself and with others. So although that Virgo Moon might be telling you "it must be 110% perfect," Pluto energy can support less-than-perfect results as long as they're done with integrity and sincerity.
The seed of suffering in you may be strong,
but don't wait until you have no more suffering
before allowing yourself to be happy.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh, The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation
The best way to use this Virgo Full Moon energy is to look at what seeds you're planting and whether you have provided the right amount of soil, fertilizer, water, warmth and sunlight—all the things needed for a new endeavour to grow. Some adjustments may need to be made.
In addition, what are you harvesting now that has been developing over time? What kind of karma are you reaping? If your previous actions have been falling short of what you hoped would be abundant results by now, this is a time to evaluate what worked, what didn't and how you might do it differently next time. As unsatisfying as that might sound, it really is true.
And if you can remove the judgment from your evaluation, you'll probably find that there are parts of your efforts that weren't a complete flop. It's a matter of how much and in what ways you succeeded and ways you didn't. Do the Virgo thing and drill down into the details—not to fire at yourself like buckshot, but to understand that it's not all-or-nothing.
The empowered feminine is about holding the energy—gestating and supporting and allowing something to continue grow in its own way. In other words, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Rather, this is a time to celebrate the beginning and continuation of the life force, in whatever way it is manifesting in your life.
The true harvest of my life is intangible -
a little star dust caught,
a portion of the rainbow I have clutched.
~ Henry David Thoreau
We are star stuff harvesting sunlight.
~ Carl Sagan
Directness of speech, fast perceptions and an attitude of "just do it" mark this transit. While Mercury sprints through Aries, you may feel the impulse to cut through and get to the point in conversations and other forms of communication. Body language speaks loudly now, as do actions. At its best, this transit can help words, awareness and insight to arise spontaneously, combined with the courage to express them. On the other hand, you could also say things out of anger, impatience or impulse that you later regret. It may be a time when you'd rather cut to the chase – acknowledge things and move on – rather than hang around to process the details. It's a great time to spin ideas that can be developed later. It is also a good time to think independently and follow your thoughts into new perspectives.
Today, and up to a few days before and after, you may find that all the lights seem to be green for you to move ahead and take action. This might be a spontaneous impulse to seize the moment, or it could be about taking the next step in a project or process that you've been planning and carefully considering. It could also be a time when your emotions are more easily expressed. There may be someone who is urging, inspiring or rousing you to take this action. It's up to you to decide if this is wise and in your best interest, and if so, the best way to make this happen.
For a few days, you may become focused on physical, spiritual or psychological healing...or you might become aware of the need for it due to problems. Your physical vitality may be more susceptible to health problems, and your inner or spiritual strength and sense of purpose may feel a bit weak or vulnerable. However, you might also experience new motivation to build up your strength and endurance on all levels. Therefore, this could be a time when you embark on fresh health or fitness goals, or new directions that carve reformed purpose out of previous hardships. Psychologically, you could become aware of the ways that your self-esteem is undermined or sabotaged – either by outside situations or people or you doing it to yourself without realising it, or even ways that you do this to someone else. This is a good time to observe and learn about how these issues operate in your life, what role you play in this dynamic, and how you could make different choices. By increasing your level of acceptance of human imperfection, of both yourself and others, you can strengthen those areas where you now feel vulnerable. Since self-esteem (yours and others') can be a bit fragile now, boosting self-confidence through praise, support, encouragement and confidence can have a powerful and healing effect right now.
It is necessary for you to come to grips with limitations, boundaries or expectations. If you have been avoiding some task or obligation, this transit might bring consequences from that avoidance or a warning of consequences to come. You might also encounter a situation that requires you to accept unwanted responsibility or restricts your freedom in some way. You might be faced with some part of your life being pruned back, either to rein in something that is out of control or to make room for new growth. This is likely to be more or less stressful depending on how comfortable you are dealing with responsibility, authority, limits and hard work. If you have a hard time with authority issues, you might find yourself in conflict with someone in authority under this transit – perhaps in part because your buttons are getting pushed. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you are challenged to take action or make a decision that involves taking on more responsibility. It is also a time when you may have to find better ways to deal with personal boundaries – accepting others' or learning to assert your own. You're bumping up against reality, so try to work constructively with it, not hurl yourself against it.
Social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness mark this transit. It can be a great time to negotiate contracts or agreements because the communication can usually flow easily. Focus your awareness on achieving a mutual balance between you and the other person. A win-win solution is especially easy to achieve now – so much so, in fact, that it might be tempting to only say what you think the other person wants to hear (which may or may not be wise). This can also be a time of appreciating and expressing beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone you want to get closer to (in terms of romance, friendship, business, partnership, or even an adversary!), talking gently and listening receptively can be the key that unlocks the door. You may also get new creative ideas from your interactions with people or from observing them.
International Astrology Day happens every year to celebrate the March Equinox. Why at this time? Because that's when the Sun reaches the first degree of the first zodiac sign - 0° of Aries, which begins the astrological year! What time could be more perfect to celebrate astrology?
Many astrology organizations put on special events to celebrate and introduce astrology to the public. One example is that all astrology reports from Evolving Door Astrology are 25% OFF until the end of March. No excuse not to celebrate our special day! ;-)
Another example: if you're near Toronto, Canada (where I am), there is a free reading event hosted by Astrology Toronto on Saturday, March 18th – a few days early but timed for convenience to both the public and our readers.

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Aries! This is the Vernal Equinox – the time when day and night are of equal length. In the northern hemisphere, this marks the beginning of Spring, as the light increases. In the southern hemisphere, it is the start of Fall, as the light decreases. While the Sun is in Aries, it is a time when all of us (not just those born under the sign of Aries) have the opportunity to experience our Aries nature. The archetype of that nature is like the pure life force that is contained in a single seed. A seed is the residue of a previous cycle of growth – both its resulting harvest and its unfinished business. The Aries energy is about our use of that raw life force within our personal expression of that energy. It manifests in assertiveness, courage, risk-taking, directness, initiative, our sex drive, and the pioneering spirit. It can also emerge as aggression, pushiness, violence, anger, recklessness and self-absorption. The same forceful energy that can fuel damage and single-minded egotism is the same energy that, applied in a different way, is also essential for self-validation, confidence and the drive to make things happen. While the Sun is in Aries, we all have the opportunity to explore how we use this energy in our lives and whether we want to change this. Here are some suggestions about how to explore your Aries nature: Is there something new you want to start in your life? What activities do you want to begin that you've never done before? What will give you the courage and confidence to bring these into your life? If it is not possible to do this, or if you encounter delays, how do you deal with your frustration? Do anger and frustration motivate you to take action, or do these emotions tend to overwhelm and inhibit you? How do you express your anger, and does this clear the air or just create more problems? Use this time to explore these and related areas.
You are faced now with a challenge to empower your communication and perceptions, although this may not come easily. It could involve having to face some rather difficult truths that might be a bit disturbing or hard to accept. However in doing so, you gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself, your situation and your role within it. Obsessive or persistent thoughts that are morbid or paranoid are possible, which could be helped by finding something more positive to focus on or a creative outlet. Communication (from others or yourself or both) could be intense, intimidating or even downright damaging, since it may be tempting to get caught up in power struggles and domination. But communication can also be used now to heal, by cutting through hypocrisy and insincerity in order to reach a deeper authenticity and truth – like lancing a boil so that healing can take place.
Your thoughts and words can become amplified under this transit, which could bring a sense of adventure, a surge of ideas, and/or imbalance due to exaggeration. You may find it's hard to stop talking (or writing), your head is filled with so many possibilities. However, your judgment about the validity of your ideas may be a bit off, or you might feel the urge to overstate your position to keep from being misunderstood. Blame and judgment could creep into your perceptions of others or the other way around. This might spring from a need to find a greater meaning or truth in the facts, having difficulty bridging the gap between the raw information and the big picture. The trick is to keep a balance between simplicity and elaborate complexity. The challenge is to find ways to express, think about and understand the vast range of possibilities and meaning within the perceptions of everyday life. Not all of it will survive the translation, but enormous spiritual creativity can be generated in the trying.
When the Sun conjuncts Venus retrograde, it initiates a new beginning in all things related to Venus. That includes self-image, beauty, love, relationships, interaction, finances, resources, pleasure and sensuality. However, this new beginning is small and largely hidden, like a seed beneath the earth that is about to sprout. You are the co-gardener of your soul now, in partnership with the Universe. Therefore, be gentle, consistent and supportive of yourself, as you would a sprouting seed. You may not be clear on what the new beginning is until well after Venus goes direct, so be patient. Now is a good time to gather intuitive thoughts and impressions of what kind of changes you would like in Venus areas. Would you like to improve your self-image so that you are more loving and accepting of yourself? Perhaps you would like to stabilise your material security and help it grow gradually? Or maybe you want to bring more pleasure and harmony to your relationships and interactions with others? Start by connecting to the loving and blessed person inside yourself first.
If you live in the UK, Europe or in the Middle East, and your region observes Daylight Saving Time, it's time to move your clocks one hour FORWARD. If you're not sure, check the change dates for your location on DateAndTime.com.
Communication and thoughts can be radical, spontaneous, unusual and uncharacteristic under this transit. You may be compelled to speak your mind to say things you've held back from saying before now. However, as the saying goes, there is a risk of "shooting off your mouth before your brains are loaded." It is a time when you are likely to be open-minded and flexible in your perceptions. Our eyes are wide open, and as a result, we may be a bit shocked, surprised or stunned by what we see. This can also release our creative genius and bring inspired clarity, especially as we look to the future. Encounters with groups, friends and the greater community are also possible at this time.
Mercury is now "in the Shadow" – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde in about 2½ weeks time. During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through the same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more extensive process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences—ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected. This includes not just talking, but also email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods.
The situations developing over the next couple of weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, to plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. Patience is a valuable quality during this time. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes—or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct.
Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):
There is potential for inspired action now. You could achieve a softening or soothing of the blunt force of anger, frustration, confrontation and conflict, without this resulting in powerlessness or passivity. It may be easier to move forward with your plans and intentions based on the power of faith or ideals. It's important to not get lost in those ideals to the point where you lose sight of what's realistic, but this is a time when you may be more inclined to take a leap of faith and say "Oh what the heck!" Your emotional impact on others (or their impact on you) could be greater than is intended or expected, so use this expanded energy wisely.
