New Moon in Aries ~ I Love Me!

Aries, the sign of the ram, is a boisterous, fast moving, fiery sign. It's associated with the season of spring, up-rushing energy and flowers fighting for the sun.

As the first of the Fire signs, Aries is brave, pushing up and out into new territories. Ruled by warrior Mars, we fight for what we believe is right and battle to win.

"Me first" is the Aries motto and whilst the shadow side of this sign is selfishness, the positive is that it encourages us to assert our place in the world.

Aries has no qualms about saying, "Hey, I'm here, let's get this thing started!" It's Aries energy that gives you drive, initiative, passion and the will to go after what you want. Aries is the divine spark within that thrills and inspires confidence.

You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.
~ Sharon Salzberg

New Moon conjunct Venus

The only major aspect to this Aries New Moon is a conjunction to retrograde Venus. Venus herself struggles somewhat in this sign as she's far more about creating harmony and loving relationships. Venus is all about "I love you" but in Aries it's about "I love me!"

Instead of striking out and starting new projects or relationships, this New Moon suggests we need to go within and bravely learn to love ourselves first and foremost. Self love is integral to the path ahead.

As we reappraise our relationships and how we spend our time and energy, there is also a necessary reassessment of our core values too. A stronger awareness of what matters to us most helps us to define our goals more clearly, giving them extra fire.

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
~ William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Aries Stellium

Aries energy is heightened as we have five planets in this sign and Mars, ruler of this lunation, is strongly supported by a wide trine to Pluto.

Trines however, whilst generally considered positive, can sometimes spin out of control, especially under this heady atmosphere.

Mars sesquiquadrate Saturn and trine Pluto

It's helpful, then, that we also have a Mars-Saturn sesquiquadrate (135° or "a square and a half") which is like a quiet, cautious hand on the reins, restraining any tenancy to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Instead, Saturn guides Mars to use his natural force wisely for dynamic change.

We too can use our power creatively during this lunation. Just be sure to hold in check any urge towards impulsiveness which stems from frustration.

The only person who can pull me down is myself, and I'm not going to let myself pull me down anymore.
~ C. JoyBell C.

T-square - Jupiter opp Uranus sqr Pluto

The T-square between Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto is activated by Mercury's conjunction to Uranus.

There are bright ideas, big ideas, potent ideas, but in order to create something of substance, we must understand which ideas are truly worthy of investment.

Think carefully before you begin. :-)

Human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them. ...Life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.
~ Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera

Mar.29 – Mercury trine Saturn (27:44 of Aries/Sagittarius)  (Mar.30 in AU)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and pursuit of your goals now. Your mental outlook is likely to be calm and grounded. This is a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your goals. You may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the process of pursuing those past goals. Or, you might find you are able to draw on past achievements to assist and support your current goals and plans. It is a good transit to bring structure to your thoughts and communication. You may find it's a little easier to accept authority – yours or someone else's – and that you are able to speak authoritatively about things about which you have knowledge or experience.

Mar.30 – Jupiter square Pluto (19:17 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Mar.31 in AU)

Jupiter, the planet of justice and morality, and Pluto, the planet of intensity and power, are glaring suspiciously at each other, circling around and deciding if they should launch into full battle. At best, these two energies will come together to "fight the good fight" against a common enemy, whether that be an honourable principle or the behaviour of a more human adversary. At worst these planets could enter into warfare over the (perceived) tyranny of religious beliefs, the truth about controversial or ambiguous events, or the blame and judgment of enemies who you "just know" are in the wrong. Either way, this conflict might take place inside you, where different beliefs or attitudes are giving you mixed feelings about something, or you might find yourself at loggerheads with someone over differences of opinion. The key is to pick your battles and to do only what's necessary to achieve the result you want. The danger is that what starts out as a conviction to stand up on principle against something you believe is wrong could mushroom into a "scorched earth" crusade against the entire realm of villainy. Some objectivity, compassion and mercy will go a long way to ensure that everyone benefits from the peacetime that will hopefully come out of this.

Mar.31 – Mercury enters Taurus (until Apr.20)  (Apr.01 in AU)

Thoughts, communication and analysis work best when they are careful and methodical, during this transit. Your mental attitude and awareness may be somewhat serious and conservative – or down-to-earth, relaxed, and grounded in simple pleasures. Your perceptions may be a little slower to form, and you may have to search a little longer to find the right words. But there is also an increased ability to savour and appreciate your experiences more, and it can be a time when you can relax and recharge your mental batteries. You might find that your body instincts and sensory experience give you more information than your conscious thoughts. This is a good time to plan out how to manifest the ideas that sprang from your imagination in the past several weeks. Take your best ideas, perceptions and words and sow them like seeds. Then watch them grow over time.

Apr.01 – Mercury-Sun Greatest Elongation as Morning Star (02:29 of Taurus)   ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury reaches its greatest elongation from the Sun today, meaning it is farthest away from the Sun as the Morning Star (visible in the Eastern sky just before sunrise). This occurs after Mercury has turned Direct and a few days before it leaves the Retrograde Shadow. Thoughts, awareness and decision-making tends to be clearer, and your path ahead may be easier to see. It can be a good time to reflect on the information and awareness you've gathered in the last couple of months and finalize plans for how best to act on these. If you were feeling confused or frustrated during the retrograde period, things can make more sense now. Let this be a time of fresh perspective and awareness.

Apr.02 – Australia rolls back to Standard Time

Apr.02 – Venus enters Pisces (until Apr.28)  (Apr.03 in UK, AU)

Creativity, harmony and compassion permeate our experiences while Venus waltzes through Pisces. If you are an artist, musician, writer or other imaginative artisan, this can be a time of great creative inspiration. Even if you're not, this can still be a time when your appreciation of the arts is heightened and your sensual enjoyment of life increases. Relationships can be influenced by this placement, by encouraging more openness to love and romance. While this can make interaction smoother and more magical, it might also make you more vulnerable to deception or disappointment. Be receptive don't misplace your better judgment. This can also be a time when you are prone to feeling a Universal Oneness with humanity. You may find you have increased capacity for compassion, caring and connection with others. This, too, can be a mixed blessing – it can bring out your most loving side, but could also make you more easily taken advantage of. You might feel inspired to make a selfless sacrifice, or to donate money or resources as a form of service. It is all done in the name of Universal beauty, truth and compassion. Celebrate this transit by going to a concert of beautiful music, or stroll through an art gallery, or indulge in dreamy sensuality, or let yourself feel a loving connection with all that is around you.

Apr.03 – Mercury trine North Lunar Node (02:36 of Taurus/Virgo)  (Apr.04 in AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, and up to a couple of days before and after, things can feel like they're starting to make sense. What you read, hear and observe may seem more obvious and your ability to put this into words could flow more easily. You might identify and figure out how to utilize the tools, skills, assets and ideas that could bring you further down the road toward whatever destination you're pointed toward. However, a reality check about how wise it might be to act on these ideas and benefits is still a good idea. Write down good ideas to follow up with later.

Apr.06 – Mars trine Pluto (19:20 of Taurus/Capricorn)  (Apr.05 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CST)

You may feel a strong urge to embrace and engage power, assert your desires and act on deep impulses. Your sexual energy could also be very high now (use it wisely). You might feel like nothing can stop you or hold you back. In fact, the ability to create change and take action is especially strong right now. If you have been preparing to put plans into action, this can be a powerful time to do so. But also be aware that too much of a good thing can sometimes backfire – it is possible to overstep your bounds or come on a bit too strong, with this energy. Suppressed anger, frustration or an urge to "vanquish the enemy" may be expressed more forcefully than you intend. It will help to center yourself and focus on acknowledging your emotions, impulses and power – then use your good judgment when deciding whether or how to act on them.

Apr.06 – Saturn Stationary Retrograde (27:47 of Sagittarius; until Aug.25)  (Apr.05 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after this date, your physical and emotional energy may feel a bit heavy, stuck, serious or sad. You might feel held back by circumstances or pressured by people or situations involving structure, rules, authority figures, expectations and responsibilities. For about the next four months, your ambitions and goals can benefit from planning and development at a deeper level. It is a time to rework and refine your goals to figure out how you are going to achieve them. You may also need to examine your motives for wanting to achieve these goals, as well as how feasible they are. You may therefore look at how your goals, or your method of achieving them, ought to be changed. This can also be a time of improving how you deal with authority, expectations, obligations or discipline. Toward that end, today's station could trigger these issues through events, conflicts, challenges or additional "homework." If you've been having problems or are uncomfortable with these areas, especially during the last 3 months, this retrograde period can allow you to gradually build a new way of dealing with them or problem-solving the difficulties. After Saturn turns Direct in 4 months, you will be in a better position to apply what you've learned and developed more fully.

This station is especially important. It is exactly conjunct the Galactic Centre (GC), which is a powerful point that can supercharge a planet's energy! Saturn has a way of taking whatever energy it finds and crunching it down to its bare essence, especially when it's stationary. When combined with the GC this crunching effect, Saturn can feel especially powerful, pressured, heavy or even overwhelming. You might experience demanding people or situations where you are required to comply with expectations, with very little (if any) "wiggle room." Butting heads with bureaucracy is an example. On the other hand, this supercharged Saturn can be an extremely productive agent for change when used constructively, sensibly and mindfully.

This station is also important because it is in tight square aspect to Venus (90°). Venus is herself slowing down to turn direct on Apr.15. These two will be locked in a stressful square energy throughout April. Discipline, fairness, objectivity and maturity will be essential when dealing with money, purchases, negotiations, relationships and interactions of all kinds. For example, impulse buying, no matter how tempting, is probably unwise and could lead to buyer's remorse if you haven't carefully examined the terms of the purchase to be sure it will fit your needs. (See Venus square Saturn on Apr.08, below, for more information.)

Apr.07 – Sun opposite Jupiter (18:15 of Aries/Libra)  (Apr.08 in AU)

Your confidence and ambitions may become amplified, possibly to the point of becoming a problem under this transit. It may be difficult to judge how much is too much versus just enough, and it could just be easier want more and more..."just in case." You may feel the urge to travel or do something that could expand your horizons (literally or figuratively). However, satisfaction may seem just out of reach under this transit, so there is a risk of pushing too hard and lacking perspective or good judgment. You could find that tolerance, compassion and understanding are hard to find, either in you toward others or in others toward you (or both). You are seeing things through a mental magnifying lens, which may be distorting your perceptions or reactions. On the other hand, this can be a good time to take an honest look at how closely you are living by your integrity and values. Feedback might come from others who could be seeing something more clearly than you can see it in yourself. Or, you might find that a minor irritation about someone or something outside of yourself suddenly becomes a major problem. This is probably because you're seeing it more clearly (although not necessarily more accurately). The lesson of this transit is that everything gets amplified together – the positive and the negative, and at a certain point the difference between them may become meaningless. Reaching a balanced understanding of all that lies within that expanded view is the key to gaining wisdom from the experience.

Apr.08 – Venus square Saturn (27:47 of Pisces/Sagittarius)  (Apr.09 in AU)

Finances, relationships, social contacts and/or pleasures may seem blocked or require extra effort right now. Manifesting your desires may require added hard work, but this struggle could also bring you closer to your goals. It may feel like there is a huge rock blocking your path that keeps you from fulfilling your heart's desire. It may be necessary to face some difficult aspect of your situation before it is possible to know how to proceed. This is ultimately a problem to be solved by confronting that which is unrealistic, unworkable, or just not in your best interest. This can also be a time when you arrive at a crossroads and must make some firm choices, or when circumstances might force you to change your direction. This transit can make your choice clear, although it might not be the one you hoped for.

Special note: Venus is slowing down to turn direct on Apr.15 and she will be exactly square Saturn and conjunct Chiron at that time. Venus matters will need to be handled in a very disciplined, structured, conventional way, especially (and ironically) in situations that may require more spontaneity, individuality and courage than you're comfortable with. This energy will linger throughout most of April, so it's probably wise to find a solid strategy for dealing with challenges that arise now. (See Saturn stationary Retrograde on Apr.06, above, for more information about this.)

Apr.08 – Sun square Pluto (19:21 of Aries/Capricorn)  (Apr.09 in UK, AU)

This can be a challenging time, when your sense of purpose, identity and direction may feel blocked, overpowered or regulated by forces beyond your control. You may find yourself confronted by difficult situations or people, requiring that you rally an unusually strong show of power to keep from feeling powerless or overwhelmed. The trick is to center yourself in empowerment rather than simple power – that means your power comes from within yourself rather than from controlling people and situations outside of yourself. You might find yourself involved in power struggles or abandonment, either in the present or stirred up from the past. You might be forced to let go of your attachment to something or someone due to circumstances beyond your control. However, this can also be a time when you reach inside yourself and find you have more strength than you thought you did. Adversity may inspire new assertiveness and purpose in you – empowerment born of conflict and struggle.

Apr.09 – Mercury Stationary Retrograde (04:50 of Taurus; until May.03)  (Apr.10 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Yes, it's that time again! Mercury goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped (hence "stationary" or "making a station"). During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress.

Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is a good time to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures. It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct.

In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible and learn to roll with the weirdness. It's common to have to reschedule appointments or redo things because the instructions or information got messed up the first time. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

If you absolutely must do something important during this time that can't be postponed, don't be surprised if you wind up having to redo things. It can help to be especially vigilant about triple-checking what you do, but some of these mishaps can't always be predicted or prevented, so don't be hard on yourself (nor on others).

Remember: Mercury loves to play practical jokes. This is his playtime. ;-) It helps to learn to laugh with him.

Mercury is retrograde in Taurus, which can slow down your thoughts and put you in a very experiential kind of space. You might find you "think with your body" which can communicate what you need to say or do without needing words or conscious thought. You might feel a bit "spaced out" or sluggish mentally, like when you first wake up after a deep sleep. This is probably because your mind is more tuned into your body right now than on words and language. Your intuition may tell you more than your conscious thoughts. It is probably a good time to get into a routine where you can just do whatever you're doing and you don't have to think about it a lot – kind of like a moving meditation. Slow down, don't "push the river,", and give your brain a well-deserved rest. If you have to use words and focused thought, give yourself lots of extra time to prepare and map out your plan of action.
