New Moon in Gemini, May 2017

Chart for the New Moon in Gemini
Chart for the New Moon in Gemini

In the age of technology there is constant access to vast amounts of information. The basket overflows; people get overwhelmed; the eye of the storm is not so much what goes on in the world, it is the confusion of how to think, feel, digest, and react to what goes on.
~ Criss Jami, Venus in Arms

May.25 – NEW MOON in GEMINI (04:46 of Gemini)

Gemini is our primary encounter with the conscious mind.

It is the place where we deal with information in all its forms. It is our awareness and what we notice and perceive.

It is our perceptions and how we make sense of them through our thoughts. It is our thoughts and how we express them through our words and deeds.

And it is how our mind informs and motivates our actions.

Whatever is activating Gemini energy and its planetary ruler, Mercury, tends to be reflected in how we process, interpret and convey information.

A New Moon in Gemini begins a 4-week cycle in which we can explore, understand, expand and possibly alter what we do with information.

I have enough trouble with useful information,
never mind being burdened with what is useless.
~ Erlend Loe, Naïve. Super

This particular New Moon in Gemini presents a somewhat jagged edge for us to follow in our journey through information.

Both the Sun-Moon conjunction (a.k.a. the New Moon) and Mercury are almost unaspected by major aspects (cnj, opp, sqr, tri, sxt). The New Moon is sextile Chiron (60°), its only major aspect. However, the benefit of this aspect is diluted by its wide 6:29 orb and the fact that it is also separating (meaning the energy is dissipating). In addition, the aspect is also out-of-sign (meaning the signs involved, Gemini and Pisces, are not naturally sextile to each other).

This suggests we are coming out of a time when we had a chance to recognize and/or reconcile distressing information. The New Moon and Chiron are now in signs that are naturally adversarial to each other – Gemini and Pisces have a square (90°) energy, which is dynamic, conflicted and uncomfortable. Therefore, it might be easy to forget or discount any progress that was made in the last couple of weeks. It may now be apparent that there's no quick fix to problems and more work to be done.

Mercury is sextile to Neptune, which is its only major aspect. However, this is much closer (3:24 orb) and applying (meaning it is still approaching exact and therefore the energy is building), as well as being in naturally sextile signs (Taurus and Pisces, in this case).

Mercury-Neptune shows the potential to use creative imagination in positive ways. Using your mind to envision a better situation can be very useful in problem-solving. Since this aspect is still forming (exact May.28), you'll have time to play with ideas and see how they might help your situation.

Yod aspect pattern: Mercury, Jupiter, Neptune

What complicates the Mercury-Neptune is the approaching Yod Aspect pattern with Jupiter. This energy is just entering our mental peripheral vision and will be in effect from May 25 to 29, and at its strongest on May.27 when all 3 planets will be within 0:41 orb.

This is an inspiring yet mentally challenging combination of energies. Jupiter is the Apex planet that forms irritating quincunx aspects to the sextile. So, while Mercury and Neptune are happily envisioning a more wonderful world, Jupiter annoyingly interjects with: "All fine and nice, but what do you really believe is possible?"

In other words, it's not enough to simply imagine something better, because eventually you'll still have square it up with your ethics, morality and other parts of your integrity. And that could be a much bigger challenge.

All this hoping for something – or someone – that's maybe hopeless. I'm having a hard time processing what I am supposed to believe, or if I'm even supposed to. There is too much information, and I don't like a lot of it.
~ David Levithan, Dash & Lily's Book of Dares

Although the New Moon and Mercury have precious few major, straightforward aspects, what they have plenty of are Octile family aspects – semi-squares (45°) and sesqui-quadrates (135°). These aspects are derived from the stressful square aspects (half of a 90° square and a square-and-a-half).

Cactus Gardens, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Although traditionally considered "minor" aspects, the octiles are not to be underestimated! They carry with them the dynamic, challenging, conflicted, "ouchie" energy of their square ancestors and can still pack quite a punch. Square (90°) and opposition (180°) aspects signify direct, in-yer-face energy that can feel like you've been body-checked by body-builder. Octiles, on the other hand, tend to feel sharper, more prickly. A cactus can look relatively benign from a distance ...until you get up close and fall into one!

The New Moon forms an extremely tight semi-square to Venus (0:32 orb) and sesqui-quadrate to Pluto (0:40 orb). In addition, Venus squares Pluto almost exactly (0:07 orb). This circuit of energy contains a lot of stressful energy that could have you feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place, but could also generate a lot of heat from friction that can get you moving too.

Aspect pattern: Venus, Pluto, Sun, Moon

Venus square Pluto could make receptivity, compromise or intimacy a bit risky, with Pluto hovering overhead determined to control the transaction. Pluto energy is best wielded by embracing one's personal power, which means avoiding the urge to control, censor or dominate others around you, and instead focusing primarily on adjusting your own actions and attitudes. Venus-related experiences can become powerful, persuasive and provocative, but this might come at a cost; you need to understand if the cost is worth what you get for it.

The Sun and Moon form octiles to the square – semi-square to Venus, sesqui-quadrate to Pluto. It suggests that how you focus your awareness and perceptions can make a difference in how effectively you are able to steer the Venus-Pluto square. And this might not be easy because as you encounter the need to navigate through that square energy, you could be tempted to overdo it.

For example, you might feel that Pluto control is too big to fight so your Venus negotiator compromises too much and gives away too much of your power. Or you might be afraid of being cornered into a bad deal, so you lean toward the use of force and control, which can ruin a chance to create a win-win situation. And ideally you want a reconciliation of conflicting interests at the end of this process, if possible.

The best potential from these energies is to increase your awareness of both the interpersonal/external dynamics and your personal/internal issues that are getting stirred up. It can be tricky to hold that dual mental focus but that is likely to be your most powerful tool.

You seek too much information
and not enough transformation.
~ Shirdi Sai Baba

Mercury forms (what I call) a Hard Wedge aspect pattern with Mars and Saturn. This is potentially a difficult collection of energies. Mars opposite Saturn (180°) is one of the more strenuous combinations, since Mars is all about reacting and moving forward, whereas Saturn is about caution and containment.

Hard Wedge aspect pattern: Mars, Saturn, Mercury

When these two work together effectively they combine the ambition and passion of Mars with the forethought and realism of Saturn—quite the powerhouse! But when they get stuck fighting with each other, you can feel like you're just spinning your wheels or going around in circles.

The opposition aspect between them is prone to projection. When this happens, you pick the planet you're most comfortable with and then push against the other one. So, defiant Mars can look at Saturn and see only an oppressive, impenetrable authority figure to be blamed for all the ways Mars feels held back. Or, confident Saturn could look at Mars and see an unruly, immature energy that must be contained so it doesn't mess up Saturn's careful plans.

At best, they can balance each other out. We all need both energies in order to be effective in what we're striving to accomplish. Passion and discipline. Emotions and sober second thought. Stimulation and calm. Daring and caution. While these energies can be made to work well together, initially they tend to hiss and spit at each other—especially if we haven't yet found the trick to getting them to co-exist inside of us.

Into this standoff comes Mercury. He isn't terribly comfortable with either of them, being semi-square to Mars and sesqui-quadrate to Saturn. If Mercury is strong enough he could take on a Ben Hur persona and compel them to move in the direction of his choosing.

However, Mercury doesn't have much support from the rest of the chart to do that. And being in Taurus he is disposed (ruled) by Venus who is busy with problems of her own. So, Mercury may be more likely to feel besieged by Mars and Saturn than capable of taking command of them.

Mercury in Taurus likes to take things one step at a time, complete with sufficient resources, pleasing comforts and a satisfying pace to do it all in. However, with Mars and Saturn battling over who gets to steer the chariot, Mercury is likely to feel pressured into choosing sides.

For example, you might feel the urge to "just go for it" and act impulsively (Mars) in a decision you're trying to make, or hold back indefinitely, believing you need more skills, more information, more knowledge, more experience (Saturn). Pressure can mount to acquire more, more, more of what you fear you have less, less, less of. The result could be swinging between paralyzing indecision versus blindly jumping at the nearest option.

My head was a magpie's nest lined with such bright scraps of information.
~ Alice Munro, Too Much Happiness

All of this can boomerang back into the Gemini New Moon in a way that only increases the sporadic, distractible, unfocused tendencies of Gemini and Mercury. What can help is that Uranus forms a Wedge aspect pattern with the Mars-Saturn opposition. Unlike the Hard Wedge that's composed of all stressful energies, the ordinary, garden-variety Wedge is nicely balanced between stressful and cooperative aspects ...although Uranus is bound to spice up this one considerably.

Wedge aspect pattern: Mars, Saturn, Uranus

Apex planet Uranus is trine Saturn and sextile Mars (120° and 60° respectively). The apex planet gets along with both sides of the opposition, which can contribute either a creative outlet or escape mechanism to deal with the opposition struggle. In this case, Uranus can bestow his genius and inventiveness by thinking of fresh ways to bridge the gap, perhaps through experimentation or looking at the problem from a non-rational perspective.

On the other hand, Uranus might also react erratically to the situation in an attempt to break free of the stalemate at any cost. While this could theoretically work, there are likely to be consequences to live with afterward, so it's wise to put some kind of boundaries around how insolent or subversive you're prepared to get.

Too much information, and yet, in her case, not enough.
In a world of diminishing mystery, the unknown persists.

Overall, this New Moon cycle could ramp up your "information overload" even more than it has been. "Too much information" has become the norm and we are all scrambling to decipher what it all means and what to do about it or with it.

This lunar cycle could well raise your mental stress level, so it's good to make a point of taking time out to rest your weary brain on a regular basis. Yes, I know it's hard to turn your back on Facebook or Twitter, but finding ways to detox your mind will help keep you grounded and sane through a potentially chaotic time.

Your experience of the New Moon in Gemini will reflect how you work with all of these energies. It presents a challenge to mentally navigate through some pretty tight corners, twists and turns. There IS a way through, though. And you'll need a savvy bag of tricks filled with cleverness, playfulness, creative imagination, awareness, meditation and healthy curiosity to get to the other side of it.

So: take a page from Mercury's book of Taurus and take it one step at a time, one trauma at a time, one idea at a time.

Information overload is a symptom of our desire
to not focus on what's important.
It is a choice.

May.28 – Mercury sextile Neptune (14:09 of Taurus/Pisces)   (May.27 in HAST, AKDT)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit, with a little applied effort and focus. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) The possible disadvantage is that you might want so much to reach a state of inspired intuition, magical outlook and effortless communication, that you are willing to be deceived rather than fall short of what you are hoping for. Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

May.29 – Mars opposite Saturn (25:44 of Gemini/Sagittarius)   (May.28 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

This can be a difficult transit that pits your individual will and desire against anything or anyone that seem to block it. Authority figures can become adversaries who may seem to only want to say No in response to what you want to do. As a result, it is easy to polarize to others during this transit – to rebel and fight by pulling in the opposite direction. It will help if you can manage to keep a firm grip on your own Inner Adult – the part of you that is responsible and accountable – instead of letting others act out that role in your life. Alternatively, if you find it easier to be the responsible, serious, structured Adult, then it will help to embrace your own spontaneous and exuberant impulses, rather than polarizing to others who exhibit those qualities. By owning both energies in this transit, you can work with both your spontaneous impulses AND your ability to cautiously pick and choose when and how to act. This may not be easy, since these energies do not mix easily, but when they work together they can generate potent productivity, ambition and results.

May.30 – Mars sextile Uranus (26:57 of Gemini/Aries)   (May.31 in NDT, UK, AU)

You have an opportunity to move forward through inspired action. This can bring creative problem solving to any conflicts or challenges that are currently in your life. Now is the time to think outside the box and experiment with trying out new responses, actions and directions. It may be easier to be spontaneous and even to act "out of character." If this is something you easily go overboard with, you might want to find ways to channel this constructively. The idea is to be refreshingly spontaneous, not recklessly impulsive. On the other hand, if you have trouble kicking up your heels and being free and unfettered, this transit can be used to get you moving a bit better. If you don't use this energy constructively or consciously, you might wind up feeling somewhat erratic or restless. Find something exciting, inspiring or unusual to spend your energy on.

May.31 – Mercury trine Pluto (19:00 of Taurus/Pisces)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

May.31 – Mars sextile North Lunar Node (27:35 of Gemini/Leo)   (Jun.01 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Including a day or two before and after today, this may be a time when opportunities come your way. Taking action could have results or implications that reach farther than you expect. You might feel more energetic, motivated or passionate than usual, and therefore find it easier to get moving on projects and plans. By the same token, if you move your body and take steps toward what you want, the incentive and energy could come to you to keep going with it; in other words, getting your physical energy moving could "prime the pump" mentally and emotionally. Remember that this could be any kind of energy—not just positive strides, but also anger, hostility, vindictiveness and rejection. Use this opportunity wisely.

Jun.01 – Venus trine Saturn (25:30 of Aries/Sagittarius)   (Jun.02 in AU)

Stability in relationships and finances characterises this transit. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and to invest the hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and interaction with others. Commitment and structure are easier to achieve and embrace than change or taking risks. Self-worth can benefit now because you are less inclined to give in to mood swings. However, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Jun.02 – Mars square Chiron (28:30 of Gemini/Pisces)

It may be time to confront issues in your life that involve how/why you get hurt by others, how you yourself hurt others, and how healing can take place in either of these situations. Your awareness of this may due to a conflict in your life, but this can be a valuable learning experience for you, more-so than usual. Part of the problem may be that you need to tread your own path but are avoiding this for whatever reasons – perhaps circumstances compel you to satisfy others' expectations, or perhaps you are still struggling to muster the courage to find and walk your own path. Whatever the reasons, this transit may give you a push that will help to steer you in a healing direction, possibly by showing you how and why the path you have been on does not lead to where you want to go. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take some time out from the stress to get re-centered and grounded.

Jun.03 – Venus conjunct Uranus (27:05 of Aries)   (Jun.02 in HAST, AKDT)

The warm receptivity of Venus can become somewhat cool, detached and unpredictable when combined with Uranus. This is a good combination for carrying out a dispassionate strategy, or for networking with acquaintances and associates. It can also be a time when you might liberate yourself from old connections – for example, choosing to end a relationship, stepping away from an outworn friendship, or being open to experimenting with new kinds of connections with people. It can also be a time of impulse spending, or wanting to use your resources and finances for a humanitarian purpose. Finances may become a bit unpredictable or unstable – either bringing income when you didn't expect it, or spending it when you may or may not have. Whether you want to liberate your own life or someone else's, this is a time when freedom and independence become the focus of pleasure. Experimentation is also tempting, and while this can be invigorating, it might also leave you with consequences you hadn't anticipated. Embrace your spontaneity, but don't divorce your judgment.

Jun.03 – Sun trine Jupiter (13:16 of Gemini/Libra)   (Jun.04 in AU)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it can click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time, finding new meaning in your live and the events that unfold around you. Self-confidence can run high now, and you could feel inspired to fight for justice or some cause. At the same time, there is a chance that all this self-assurance and "knowing" could go overboard into over-confidence, dogmatism or over-indulgence if it's not grounded in realism and humility. Just use your best judgment and enjoy this warm, shining energy!

Jun.03 – Venus trine North Lunar Node (27:31 of Aries/Leo)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")  (Jun.04 in AU)

Today, as well as up to a couple of days before and after, you may feel a bit more comfortable in your own skin and in the social world around you. In fact, interactions you have with others may prove fruitful to help you move further along your path toward whatever destination you're pointed in. You might be in a position to do this for someone else, as well. It may be a good time to spend or save money and other resources. However, it's still wise to do a reality check to make sure both side of the exchange are satisfied that you got as much as you gave.

Jun.04 – Sun square Neptune (14:13 of Gemini/Pisces)   (Jun.05 in AU)

Your ideals, hopes and wishful thinking may loom a little too large during this time, making you prone to disappointment and disillusionment. You might want a fantasy or dream to come true so much that you disconnect from the reality that seems to be in the way – only to find that the obstacle was serving a positive purpose after all. Your imagination may be very active now, but not easy to control or balance with reality. However, it can be a very creative time if you're able to harness that imagination for productive use. Unconscious urges and longings may be especially close to the surface, so you have an opportunity to learn more about the hidden forces that drive you (and perhaps distort your view of the world around you). Spiritually, you might discover that your yearning for enlightenment is not the straightforward path you had hoped for, but it can be just as valuable (although disappointing) to discover what is *not* your best path. Emotionally you may feel a bit overwhelmed, discouraged or confused. On the plus side, you have an opportunity to observe a deeper part of you, which is usually camouflaged against the distracting background of day-to-day life. There is tremendous creative, spiritual and healing potential to be found by listening to and working with the inner voices from those depths.

Jun.04 – Mars enters Cancer (until Jul.20)   (Jun.05 in AU)

The fiery energy of Mars is poured through the sensitive, emotional waters of Cancer. This is not the easiest placement for Mars, since its sharp edge becomes somewhat softened and diluted. However, this is also a time when it is possible to use your assertive and proactive energy for the protection of yourself or others. This is like the mother bear that can become extremely fierce when protecting her young, and in the same way you have an abundance of energy to defend your "children" – literally or figuratively, in the sense of creative projects, loved ones, your Inner Child, or your home "nest." This is also a time when deep emotional issues may erupt to the surface, like buried anger, repressed frustration or unconscious fear. The focus of your feelings may be a little unstable and moody, but it also gives you an opportunity to nurture, vent and express those feelings. Observe how you respond to any deep feelings that emerge, either in yourself or in others. Does your Inner Parent try to repress or scold that Inner Child, or are you able to respond lovingly, caringly and sensitively? This is a learning experience that can teach you how to nurture yourself ...and others.

Jun.05 – Mercury square North Lunar Node (27:21 of Taurus/Leo)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Under this transit, you might find you need to, or are compelled to, change your mind about where you are heading in your life. You could be confronted with facts or information that contradicts what you thought was real or true about your sense of life purpose, or it might seem like someone is getting in your way. You may be tempted to dismiss this, deny it, avoid it or rationalize your way around it. However, there is probably valuable information coming to you that is important to take into consideration. It doesn't necessarily mean your life destination should be abandoned; rather, you are challenged to see it more clearly. You might also need to communicate information or a point of view that could be unwelcome or unpopular, or difficult to get your point across. In that case, try not to go overboard in standing your ground and focus primarily on what needs to be said and the best way to say it.

Jun.05 – Mercury sextile Chiron (28:35 of Taurus/Pisces)   (Jun.02 in ADT, NDT, UK, AU)

Your mental focus and communication could get an injection of healing energy under this transit, as long as you are prepared to put some effort into getting it. Your spirits can become uplifted now, from seeing a light at the end of the tunnel or from finding a light that guides you along the path in front of you. It will not, however, make the tunnel or the path go away; you'll still have to walk the walk. But your mental perspective can become more accepting of inconsistencies and frustrations under this transit, which can alleviate a lot of stress and make the journey a bit smoother. Mental struggles and critical "self-talk" may find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings peace of mind. You have an increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems, by providing insightful feedback. To get the most out of this transit, aim to find a mental outlook and communication style that can tolerate contradiction without having to eradicate one in order to justify the other.

Jun.06 – Uranus trine North Lunar Node (27:13 of Aries/Leo)   (Jun.05 in HAST, AKDT)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

For a week or two before and after today, you might feel a flash of brilliance that lights up the path before you. It could feel like anything and everything is possible, where the world opens up to you in a whole new way. In reality, you are probably more open to the world than you usually are, so your ability to see the greater potential is much clearer and brighter. This could also be a time when you are concerned with leveling the playing field to boost your own potential or someone else's; to make the game into more of a win-win result rather than winner-take-all. It may feel lilberating and even a bit intoxicating. Just remember that shining visions make great destinations but often don't translate into reality in the way you think or hope they will. That doesn't mean you shouldn't aim for it, but keep in mind you still have to put one foot on front of the other to make it happen.

Jun.06 – Venus enters Taurus (until Jul.04)   (Jun.05 in HAST, AKDT)

Venus rules the sign of Taurus, so she is very comfortable here! Your experiences of pleasure and sensuality are likely to be heightened...perhaps even a bit too much! You might be tempted to overindulge in sensory delights. On the other hand, you may feel the urge to be more grounded, practical and methodical in the way you handle relationships, money, possessions, material values, and attracting what you desire. It is also a time when your desires could manifest tangibly or at least become more apparent. It may be possible to see more clearly the ways that your self-worth is tied to material things, like income, savings, possessions and spending. Your finances and possessions could act like a "touch stone" to reassure you in times of stress. The trick is not to let this become a substitute for genuine self-respect. To make the most of this transit, take some time to relax and enjoy life! Take your time, smell the flowers, drink in the sunsets, listen to beautiful music, get an aromatherapy massage or explore new uses for chocolate. ;-)

Jun.06 – Mercury enters Gemini (until Jun.21)   (Jun.07 in AU)

Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini, so the mind wants to fly fast and free. Communication and perceptions may come and go like a fresh breeze through an open window. This can create a wide variety of ideas but not necessarily productive application of those ideas. You might find it a little easier to articulate words, sharpen your mental focus, and collect and analyze your thoughts and information. This can give wings to your ideas and self-expression, but remember that you'll have to back up any promises and "fast talk" with action and substance. Let this be a time to explore possibilities and enjoy social interaction, rather than jump to final conclusions. Collect the raw data and exchange ideas, but be aware that understanding the broader meaning will likely come later.
